I am having the same difficulty. I would like to put the fireplace in a corner (I personally don't like having the TV off to the side on the same wall. In theory I would like it on a corner, but my room is all windows on one side, an a straight wall that joins a hallway so I'm not sure how that would would. As for it being too high, my current plan is to get a very comtemporary low fireplace. Currently we have a similar set up and while the TV is a bit higher than I like it (maybe 6 or 8 inches) with it tilted downwards it has never felt uncomfortable. GreenDesigns, I can appreciate your point of view, but it is subjective. Many designers plan TVs over fireplaces and they look fantastic when properly planned out, which doesn't need to include a lot of black accents. In an ideal set up I would love to have a room where the fireplace and TV were on entirely separate walls, but that often doesn't work, and from my own perspective having the TV and fireplace on the same wall but not stacked creates an asymmetry that I personally don't like. That said, I can see why other people prefer that design and I wouldn't try to talk anyone out of it. At first I considered different solutions as well, however I've decided the TV over the fireplace is my preference when compared to the TV being in a cabinet next to the fireplace, or the TV being on a console table with the fireplace in the corner. I'm not a mason or engineer, but what I'd want to see is a structure of some sort to carry the weight of any bricks left above the opening down to a weight bearing surface below. Something as simple as 2x4 framing at the sides of the cabinet opening would probably be fine, and it sounds like you've already given this a lot of thought and have more hands on experience than I do with these issues. Since I live in earthquake country [everyone does, acutally: its just a matter of frequency], I do worry about a chimney taking a tumble during a during a tremble. Love the idea of re-using the bricks. I want to incorporate some of the materials from my great grandfather's homestead cabin in my new home. Materials that carry the weight of memory are much more interesting...

The TV above a fireplace, unless you're sitting pretty far back, has you tilting your neck UP to watch. This gets old / tiresome, fast. That may not be a great place to put your TV, despite the convenience of it. I much prefer the TV to sit on something so that it's at eye level when we sit to watch.
