Fireplaces, corner or the TV over the fireplace?
Comments (12)To be honest, I'm only putting in the fireplace because it would look stupid without one, as EVERY new home in my area has one. (Most people try to convince me I need one in the office/den and master as well, which I am refusing to do). We will likely seldom use it, though maybe with a gas one I may switch it on some evenings for a bit. We live in California, though we are both transplants here, so we seldom find it cool enough to warrant needing it. Ideally I'd like the fireplace and TV on different walls altogether, but I can't do that without giving up windows, and that isn't an option! Currently our TV is over our fireplace and it doesn't bother me as our mantel is relatively low, and with those new landscape fireplaces it could be lower. For instance, in the second image the TV isn't too high, and I think the fireplace could even be dropped another few inches. I do think I solved my own issue as with the curtains it wouldn't be safe (or look good) to have a corner fireplace. So TV over the fireplace it is :) Also, now that I stare at all these photos some more I realize I like the clean look of not having a table beneath the TV, and if there wasn't a fireplace it looks silly to not have anything under the TV. So the decision is complete! Thanks for your advice, and helping me talk myself into a decision! :)...See MorePicture Frame Lift to Hide TV Over Fireplace?
Comments (9)So a couple of other ideas you might want to try. Samsung makes their Frame TV that shows your favorite artwork when not in use. https://www.samsung.com/us/explore/frame-tv/highlights/ Only downside is there is a separate 14.3" x 4.5" x 1.2" IO box that needs to be hidden out of view somewhere and still connect to this TV. You could actually hide the IO box in the recess and then install the frame TV over the top assuming the mounting hardware will reach past the edges of the recess. Another option to look at his Seura TV which is the same idea but a mirror when not in use. https://www.seura.com/products/smart/ They have two flavors-- a bathroom mirror type where even at 2-3" from the mirror you cannot see the TV. The TV quality is not as good but a better mirror. The second is the Living Room mirror type where you cannot see the TV when standing 3ft or farther from the TV. Not as good of a mirror but a better quality TV. On this one be careful on the 4k side as they are 4kUHD compliant but not HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, or HDR compliant the last I checked. That's a bunch of tech compliance but bottom line is you want all that in your TV if you want the very best picture available these days....See MoreMovable bracket to move TV over (non-working) fireplace up/down?
Comments (3)Wow that is a really good idea! I've never seen a bracket that would swing down even though I can picture exactly what you mean. Maybe it exists. I hope so. I have a room much like yours, except I have 5 doors and no radiator. The fireplace area is the best place for the TV, but I like my TV at seated eye level, not above, even if it's "tilted" downward. - Jim...See Moretv - led lcd over fireplace (somewhat repetitive, i know)
Comments (3)Just saw your post regarding your fireplace mount. There's a lot of variables when mounting over a fireplace: wood, pellet, or in your case, gas - zero clearance insert or real brick built fireplace - then LCD or plasma (plasma generally has cooling fans w/filters that don't like smoke & dust) - smoke is attracted to the screen - temperature rising up to the TV (which usually in most cases is not as bad as you'd think) - height of the TV which should be at eye level at the center of the screen or worse case, bottom of the screen (but then that also depends on how much TV you watch) and yes a tilt mount helps with higher mounts. Next, is on a finished brick fireplace you don't know where studs are or what's behind them - any installations that I've done I have always gone through the mortar into the stud or header, as opposed to damaging the brick which is difficult to repair if the mount is taken down. And, the big next, is installing an electrical outlet behind the TV and then finding a way to route the A/V cables to the equipment - running across the brick really doesn't create the "Photoshop look" people see in magazines! I have done some installations where a remodel was being done and they could open up a wall so you could see inside where you want to mount and figure out a cable route (keep it expandable) and outlet installation. Having said all that it can be done but I have also have had customers who wanted me to take down an installation somebody else did over their fireplace. I won't do a fireplace installation unless I am very comfortable about the installation, the customer understands everything, and then it will often be much more expensive than mounting on a standard wall. So, just be sure about what you want and make sure whoever does it, does it all to code... you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I seen such as AC power cords being fed down walls, etc.....See Morekelhuck
