Hanging valance on w/panels underneath - am I too anal retentive?

Hi everyone -

When hanging drapes, I've always used the inexpensive conventional "hidden" white Kirsch rods that curve on each side and attach directly to the wall. For some weird reason, I don't like seeing open space between the drapery fabric and wall.

In my family room, however, I'm thinking of hanging valances on a straight decorative rod. If I use the conventional white rods underneath, the panels will curve around and meet the wall, but the valance won't. Will that look odd, or is that the usual way its done? The windows are on a far wall with straight-on view, so the space between the valance and wall won't be readily visible.

I haven't liked the few decorative double rods I've seen, and may need to hang the valance higher than the panels anyway.

I'm not sure that wouldn't look weird. You know, they do make a double continental rod (the kind with the curved ends that mount to the wall. I've seen them at home improvement stores, as well as JCPenney.

Well, in the "old days" when pinch pleated drapery on a traverse rod was popular, the correct way for the drapery to be hung always had an additional drapery hook to turn the corner and hook onto the rod support at the wall. The way the drapery wasn't flat, but wrapped then end of the rod. Since the drapery hooks were on the backside of the drapes and fitted into the rings that slid on the rod, this did not interfere with the finial on the rod extending beyond the width of the drapery.

Maybe you would prefer this type of look.

Buy ready-made ones that are too long, and take them to the dry cleaner. Most cleaners have people on staff that sew, and they can hem them for you. If you want to keep the ones you have (and they seem to work fine with the carpeting color, and are okay with the wall color), have them shortened to the bottom of the window, so that the length looks intentional. One other thing you might try, tho this will seem bizarre. Take a panel and turn it upside down, so that you use the bottom hem as the rod pocket. You might have to open a couple of stitches if the side seam overlaps the bottom hem. Put it on the existing rod, and see where the panel hits. I am betting that if the tabs were removed on the now upside-down drape, the length would be right. The drape would also hang so that you didn't have the gaps at the top with part of the trim showing, etc. You could also see if you could do the same thing with the top of the curtain instead, as it appears that there is a wide enough hem there; the only issue might be that the buttons might be sewn through the hem, so you would have to take those off to open the hem. As suggested, you could also add a panel of fabric to the bottom, but if you don't sew at all, it might be a lot to tackle. You can use the iron-on tape to attach it, but you have to be able to cut the fabric correctly and it will have to be hemmed all around - perhaps more time consuming then just flipping the panel over and cutting off the tabs that end up on the bottom.

Beth, I have been so delighted and educated with all these posts. I love the evolution of your wonderfully charming home! You are an amazing woman! I share several of the decorating dilemmas you've mentioned. My "living room" is about 2' more narrow and 2' shorter than your area. I'm learning a lot from your post. The repurposed gun cabinet idea is absolute genius. Please share a photo when you've installed the shelves and contents. Regarding the non-glare glass for your larger artwork. The price of non-glare glass has become simply ridiculous. I have an entire hallway lined with (Gasp!) a family gallery wall. It includes photos from more than 100 years ago to this year's school pics of the great-nephew. Color, colorized, sepia toned, black and white, all mixed together and mostly in their original mismatched frames. That just about breaks all the rules, but I love my wall. Several of the older photos - Mom's 1954 graduation photo; MIL's 1952 wedding photo, etc. - had plain glass. I can't tolerate the glare either. I made a note in my iPod of all the frame sizes that needed replacement non-glare glass. Every time I'm at a thrift shop or yard sale I check out the "frames" area. You can often find large pictures that may be in horrid frames, but they will have non-glare glass! I buy the frame, take out the glass, and toss the rest. I found one very large print of ballet slippers framed with non-glare that was big enough to cut down into several pieces. It made one 8x10 and three 5x7 pieces of non-glare glass for my wall, all for $1. With their permission, I took the glass out at the shop, tossed the faded print, and re-donated the empty frame back to them.

I very rarely like the look. In pps's first pic, the drapes are hanging from the ceiling, and no way related to the window. It looks odd to me. I love what she did in the bedroom, where she's given the casing some space, but still kept the curtain rod within the orbit of the window. In jeannine's picture, I can't see the rest of the room, but it looks like the window goes right to the ceiling. I think that's the intent when they cover the wall above the window. But rather than making the room feel taller, it looks like the ceiling is lower. Unless your ceilings are a 12' high and not in portion to the rest of the room, why would you want to make the ceiling look lower? I do like it in Annie's kitchen, though. There are enough other architectural details going on that it's clearly not a low ceiling. And by having the light colour all the way up, instead of a band of orange paint visible, the window actually looks taller.

Ok, I think different people are talking about different things. A valence is a short drapery panel that only sits at the top of the window. It is installed with either a curtain or drapery rod or stapled to a back board, and is usually paired with blinds but can be hung alone. What Angel and Justin have pictured are blinds which can be raised and lowered, not valences. I think that the window that Justin shows is not the right dimensions to support a valence and the blind he mentioned. It'll look odd with that window. Justin, IMO you should just hang the blind and skip the valence. A valence won't add anything and will decrease the natural light into your kitchen. I wasn't certain what you meant by "horizontal blinds" - a slatted blind? Perhaps a fabric blind would be softer. And sufficient.

Thanks for responding!

Just noticed a side-angle photo of the drapes I bought, and it looks like I won't have problem after all because there's overhang on the valance that will hide the top of the panels!

I'm still wondering, though, how folks who use straight decorative rods hang panels underneath when there's no extra fabric to hide the space.

As I mentioned above, I may need to hang the valance and panels at different heights so I don't want to use a double rod. And I'm gonna dating myself, but I *still* like the classic look of pinch-pleat drapes on traverse rods for formal rooms ;)

Hang the valance not only higher, but wider than your continental rod--works best to move it the same amount wider as higher. I find that 5-6" works well. You will notice that valances often curve back on themselves so to close up the side gap--that is why it is a good idea to have them go wider than the actual window. If you push the gathers towards the ends of the decorative rod, you can arrange the ends to get the look you wish.
