What vegetables do you grow and what style garden do you have?
Comments (15)I'm still in the process of digging my veggie garden, but next year I should be done part of it so that I can get started growing something. My garden is a very large raised bed, which I am dividing with paths into small, 3 1/2 ft wide beds that I won't need to stand on ever. With our heavy clay soil, anything to cut down on compaction will be good for the plants. In the center of my garden I plan to have a small circular bed with some roses growing in it. I plan to plant in blocks and rows; I like vegetable gardens to be ornamental as well as practical. This style of gardening is called a potager, and is supposed to be popular in europe. As for what I intend to grow: potatoes, different varieties lettuce, spinach, corn, zucchini, yellow summer squash, carrots, peas, beans, beets, broccoli and cauliflower from seed. I will use transplants for: tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, peppers, eggplant and pumpkin. I would also like to try cantaloupe and watermelon transplants, though I know they'll be iffy depending on the year. Lots of freezing, lots of canning, lots of fresh eating! Before I plant all of those, we do intend to insulate and went a corner in our basement for a root cellar as well. I'll have to wait and see what plants end up being too finicky (maybe cauliflower!) and get knocked off the list....See MoreWhat do you plant (flowers, mainly) in your winter garden?
Comments (17)Hi JG, welcome to our group. Gaillardia seeds are easy to come by. If you see some growing anywhere just pick a dried up flower pod and start rubbing it between your thumbs other fingers and you'll have a hundred V-shaped winged seeds in your hand in no time.... I planted some nemesia and bacopa this year. Both are doing very well. V, interesting that you still have nemesia going, I fell in love with this one this spring, still in the pots and two of the three are still alive in full shade under the canopy of one of my live oaks. This amazes me since I was led to believe they would not make through our summer heat and humidity. Tom Nemesia...See MoreWhich plant(s) can grow anywhere, anyhow, anytime in your garden?
Comments (21)Thanks for the confirmation. I'm pretty convinced that's what we were sold. Noticed it is much easier to start from seed than a. tuberosa, which is apparently another clue it's tropical. Nice plant in spite of the sap hazard. We've never had reason trim them, so not much risk - but always good to be aware. One of our "anywhere, anyhow, anytime" plants is Zexmenia. A consistent, though not prolific, bloomer that continues to look good on only rain water once established. Can be used in sun or shade. Not the best photo, but shows lantana and salvia growing through its fairly dense cover....See MoreWhat plants do you want but can't find for your garden?
Comments (17)Gardenho and Babs I'm getting seeds if I can't find the plants. In the back of my mind I thought I'd get both seeds and plants. I just thought I'd find them this year and then didn't. Cearbhaill glad that online has worked for you. I will definitely make use of your website for checking out online stores. Edenchild I have never traveled out of the country to buy plants. Other things yes but plants no. now there will be a trip in my future I wonder what my sister is doing next February :-). Perhaps going to Seattle? :-) DeannaToby thanks. Yes I am looking for baptisia Australis. It grew beautifully in my previous card in but I had to leave it behind:-(. I will definitely attempt to purchase it as local as possible when I do order plants thanks for the heads up on that! Interesting that you can't find peony itoh mazerolm where you are. Could it be they don't grow well in your zone? Or maybe it's more rare in general. I found a website about the difference between the 3 types of peonies. Now I want all three I do have the herbaceous peony. Now I want a tree peony and Itoh peony too. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/can-peonies-stand-alone-like-bush-68154.html rouge Splendide WHITE looks wonderful. I've never grown meadow rue though so don't know it's needs. Thanks again all....See Morethreedgrad
