I put the open end at the bottom, tuck it under the mattress there like the sheets, as I have a high foot board.

I think that the pattern is supposed to be right side up as you view it when you are in bed! i know, sounds crazy. Look at some printed sheets and see if that isn't true. I know if the duvet has a button closure, I prefer it at the foot of the bed since I worry my long hair will get caught on the buttons.

Huh... I always put the open end at the top, with the duvet untucked. I guess this is to hide any openings which might be exposed and reveal the inside comforter, on beds without footboards. Is there really a hard and fast rule?

I guess it's kind of like the toilet paper over the top or along the wall. Whatever makes you happy and gives you a good nights sleep. I don't like the buttons toward the top, but it seems like that's where they should be most often. Too many other things for me worry about.

I tuck it in at the bottom because during the night it always seems to end up half off/half on the bed. I don't know what I'm doing in my sleep to toss it around like that - and it's a heavy comforter.

All of my sheets that have prints are designed so that the print is correctly viewed from the foot of the bed - not from the angle of the person sleeping.

I have two duvets where the buttons are decorative and meant to be displayed near the top of the bed. Since the duvet itself is a solid I flip it over and the buttons are at the bottom, face down so you don't see them. That's a holdover from when I had long hair - many, many eons ago!

Annie1971 said what I was thinking - whatever works for you is the right way. I mean, who's gonna tell you it's wrong??!!

I actually have a duvet cover that has the buttons on the side! We have a king bed and I kept trying to put the duvet with the buttons at the bottom but then the sides were way too short - finally turned it and Voila! it fits! Who'da thunk??

Annie1971 and dlh2000, it was curiosity and a "light bulb" moment (gee, I never thought about that before) vice something to worry about and I knew some GWers would weigh in. Mostly I'm sort of the Alfred E. Newman type - "what, me worry?" about things like this. . .and toilet paper, although I will admit to being an "over the top" on that pressing question. When I was in college (and of course, you always know everything at that age!) I remember questioning my Mom why she did things a certain way and encouraging her to try something "new and improved". Her comment to me was always "this is the way I do it, but when you have a home of your own, you can do it THAT way "!! Wise lady!! Kind of a Frank Sinatra philosophy.

Lizzie nh and vickij. . .so glad to see that I wasn't the only "top of the bed" girl!! I think I always did it that way because the pillows, shams, and deco pillows would cover the opening when the bed was made.

Maire Cate, I did get the shams. Actually, they kind of bug me too as the opening is on the left side rather than centered or set back from the side of the pillow. . .which means one of the pillow openings shows from the side of the bed. Again. . .most certainly NOT an issue that will cause me sleepless nights, but. . . .As far as my sheets are concerned, I do top sheet patterned side down so when you turn the top sheet back over the blanket, the pattern shows.

So, since I really, really wanter this set, the duvet will open at the bottom, the opening of one of the euros will show from the side of the bed, but THE BEES WILL BE FLYING UP!!

Back to what is important to each of us -- I have ALWAYS been a TP over the top person. Visiting my brother and SIL one time, their TP was out. I found a new roll and put it into it's slot going over the top, of course. A couple of hours later I went into the bathroom to find that the TP had been turned around so it was ALONG THE WALL! My bad, locating and inappropriately installing TP!
Another constant conundrum, do you put the top sheet pattern up, or pattern down? I know my preference, and will never change.

annie: in reference to the top sheet ?: if I'm covering the top sheet with something, I put it pattern down. But if it's too hot for anything but a sheet, I put the top sheet pattern up.

But your best comment I agree with: do whatever makes YOU happy!

I put the open end at the foot of the bed, because it has buttons and I don't want to be suggling buttons next to my face in the dead of winter when the duvet is wrapped around my head to keep me warm.

My current duvet cover is clearly designed to have the opening at the foot, as there is trim around three sides, but none at the edge opposite the buttoned opening.
