wall cap flap doesn't close completely - does it matter???

I am remodeling my kitchen and purchased a 600 cfm ventahood with an 8" duct. I seem to be facing some problems with my contractor. First he wanted to put a 6" duct and wall cap because that would have been easier for him to fit in the space. I had to make him talk to the people at ventahood so that they could tell him that wouldn't work properly. Now he has refused to wait for the wall cap made by ventahood to come in and purchased a cap locally that looks like the air king 8" round, but seems flimsy, has no mesh over the opening, and the flap doesn't close completely. I had pointed out that the flap doesn't close completely but he went ahead and installed it anyway because he said it doesn't matter because the hood itself has a built in duct. Is he right? I already see bugs and things getting into the duct.

Those flaps should work as smooth as possible. It's probably more important that it opens easily than if it hangs up from closing all the way. If it gets cold in the winter, you may want a damper on both ends, I think you meant "a built in flap"...

Still, you have to wonder what is wrong with this guy. Anyway, I think the Vent-a-Hood has a damper flap, but see this topic below...

I can't answer your question about the hood having a built in duct - did you mean a built in filter or screen?

We had wasps build a nest in our exhaust vent because the mesh was dislodged and the flap fell off and we didn't realize it. Unfortunately we discovered the wasps when they decided to meander down the duct and into the kitchen. We didn't have a Ventahood - this was just a Broan exhaust that was installed above our wall oven. But it would seem to me that you'd want a functioning flap.

We have two of these Kohler lo- flows, about 2 years old. We just figured out why black filmy crud keeps dumping into bowl from tank. As the tank doesn't empty after one-flip flush, the micro-organisms in the tank, as well as accumulated elements, build up to a point where it looks like the slimey sludge pit of some pre-historic cave dweller. Two treatments of bleach, and it seems to have cleared. We're hoping a periodic (weekly?) total flush will help clear "old" water and prevent the build-up. Anyone else having this issue?

That video is EXACTLY my situation except the dryer roof cap is at the very top, not near the gutter for easy access. There is also a steep pitch to the roof. I bought this item off Amazon very similar to what this guy is using in the video and I can't believe how easy it was and how well it worked. The only difference is that I did mine from the inside up to the top. Make sure there is no screen on your roof cap where lint can get caught. Once I ran the brush up carefully as far as it would go........as I brought it back down and a grocery bag full of lint came out...............I then got my leaf blower and blew out the lint I had loosened....Took about 40 min start to finish.....Now clothes are drying in record time....I can't get over it. What was taking 55 min's and still not bone dry, is now taking about 38 minutes (bone dry!).......Seriously, the hardest part of the entire job is pulling the dryer out and putting it back in, the rest is a piece of cake....Item is reusable over and over.

I really like palimpsest's plan. It has nice symmetry and great function, and will look very nice from the front door. One of the things I do not like about many of the plans posted is that the range is not directly across the aisle from the prep counter. You want to be able to just pivot and access the range, not pivot and step. You might have to have a filler between freezer and pantry wall to ensure the freezer will open all the way. It also keeps the cleanup off the island, which I agree is very important. If you GIS "kitchen sink on wall" there are lots of lovely options, and here is an article we trot out from time to time with lots of examples: http://www.thingsthatinspire.net/2010/04/kitchen-sinks-on-walls.html. You could even have no uppers and just do a huge arched mirror that would reflect your DR window (slider?), if that's a nice view. It's a cheap way to "fake" a window :) Ballard has some nice ones that look like arched, paned windows too.

I was the original author of this thread. I ended up buying the Bosch 500 series SHP65T55UC from Best Buy at a cost of just over $950 including the extended warranty and sales tax. I bought this dishwasher after reading hundreds of reviews from various sources. Simply stated, it appeared to be the best choice for the price. I've used this product for about a month now. For me, the pros and cons are as follows: Pros: Name brand with a reputable history Stainless steel interior Available in multiple colors and door styles The third rack is a helpful feature that I would now miss if I didn't have it. Cons: It will only "clean" dishes that require a moderate wash and rinse. (In other words, a frying pan with scrambled eggs stuck to it when going in the dishwasher, still tends to have eggs stuck to it coming out of the dishwasher.) There is no heating element, so don't expect a load of completely "dry" dishes, either. If you think you might need an item again soon, you might be better off washing it by hand, since this dishwasher may need 2+ hours to complete a load. The noise level varies with the volume and placement of the load. It is not always whisper quiet. To sum up, I do not feel that this dishwasher is worth what I paid for it. I'm convinced that I could have purchased a similar level of quality--perhaps even better--for several hundred dollars less. I've attempted to follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding both installation and operation. Yet, the performance of this product is disappointing. I'm at a loss to explain the overwhelming consensus of positive reviews that this product has received. Perhaps others have identified virtues that I've yet to perceive. I can only say that I regret this purchase and do not recommend this dishwasher to others.

Thank you - I did mean a built in damper. And I just woke up to the sound of the jerk cutting the metal duct work to attach to the crappy end cap. He seems to think he can fix it - I am skeptical, and would much rather at least have an end cap with a screen. I will call vent a hood later and get their opinion, but they did tell me previously that because of the built in damper on the hood you need to have an end cap that just has a gravity controlled flap that is not spring loaded.

The damper at the hood isn't going to seal tight and keep insects out (critters, maybe). I was so frustrated with the crappy plastic flaps in my VAH that I made stainless ones a few months ago and traded them out. Even these aren't an extremely tight fit- better but not perfect. At least I can hear the satisfying clunk of them shutting when I turn the hood off now.

I know my Mom has a re-badged VAH (by Viking) from the early 90's that has metal dampers. I'm not sure what they're doing now. Seems silly for a $2k hood to put $0.50 worth of damper in there.

If I was starting from scratch, I would want a screen and a functioning damper on the wall/roof cap. Wouldn't want to depend on the dinky plastic damper as my only way to keep my hot/cold air in the house (and everything else out).

Given the massive availability of small electric drive motors these days you would think someone would have come up with a miniature version of a power louver exhaust closure such as those used in industrial buildings and construction site offices.

laat: reliability would be poor.

having walked around HD and Lowes, they both have large mesh covers for wall vents. Too big for insects, but ok for small mammals and birds.
