Laminate Question (Bathroom Vanity)

Hello,

I posted on the Bathrooms board, but thought I'd through this out to you all as well. I think this board has more activity. I need to replace the vanity top in my son's bedroom. It is laminate and will not go with the new tile that we will be adding. I had thought of going with a stock granite countertop at Lowes or Home Depot, however my 48 inch cabinet requires a 48" top since it is sandwiched between a wall and another attached cabinet. (pic attached). I can't use a 49" top since I don't have room for the overhang. If I choose to replace the existing laminate with new laminate, what is involved? Do I replace the entire board/counter? Do I put the new laminate on top of the existing laminate? Can I peel the existing laminate off? Any ideas?

I am not sure that I am following your question. Is that a photo of your vanity?. There does not seem to be any top on there now so what do you mean bt peeling off and why can you not just order a piece of granite or laminate in 48 inch. I am obviously missing something.

When you order laminate from HD, Lowes, etc. it comes ready to just set on your counter.
Unless you've done it before, I wouldn't recommend redoing the top yourself.

If you want granite, I suggest going to some of the granite storefronts or call around until you locate a fabricator that has leftover stock. They often have scraps from other jobs and will cut, polish and install the piece for you. Often their prices are better than the big box.
If you're trying to save $$, there are many gorgeous laminates that will go with your tile. I know of a brown faux granite Wilsonart that would great with the flooring! I think your son would love it!
DIL once did a countertop similar in size and the cost was a little over $200.

When I was doing my very first bathroom remodel -- almost 20 years ago(!) -- a wise cabinet guy said to me "this is America, and you get what you pay for". That being said, there are laminates and there are laminates. Some are good quality and will hold up great, others will start to delaminate quickly. I would find out what brand your guy is recommending and ask about it here....someone is sure to have some info. I can say that the previous owner of this house put laminate cabs in the master bath, and they are lovely and hold up great & look high end (even tho laminate is not my thing). I saw on the kraftmade site that they have a new line of laminates that look high end in the pics, altho I have no personal knowledge of them, so I can't offer an opinion. If you do go with lam, I would probably suggest going with white or black to keep to the theme. If you go for wood, just try to keep it coordinated overall -- if you use a warm wood-tone be sure to use a warm paint color and carry the tones through in the accesories.

I think it will look fine either way....if it is lower, you have a dedicated/defined area as your makeup vanity. If it is the same height, that space may or may not be used as a vanity and will just become part of the overall sink area. Only you can decide which will work better for you. A counter-height stool COULD look a little strange in your bathroom and is not the norm, but if you like it that's all that matters.

I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. If I had been willing to go with a painted finish, I think we might have stuck with the 72" Modero.

Hi Jackowskib - thanks for the photo. I really like the look. I do have two recessed lights in the room as well. What is the width of your vanity lights. The two light fixture is 13.5 inches wide. The three light fixture is 23.5 inches wide. I wasn’t sure which would look better with the mirror that spans across the width of the vanity. I do like your two rectangular mirrors though. But I’m worried that would make my space look smaller.

I think I know what you are asking.........Yes, you replace the entire counter. Take the old one off and put on the new one. You could do a custom application of the laminate but why spend the money. You can custom cut a granite piece too.

Hello,

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. The laminate top is on the cabinet, in this picture it wasn't yet as this was taken during construction. I really don't want to do anything custom as I fear the cost to be more than I want to pay right now. I'm having 2 floors tiled and the only reason I want to replace this countertop is because I fear that it will clash. Maybe it won't be too bad. I'll post another picture with the laminate countertop and see what you all think with regards to whether I can keep it as is for now.
Otherwise, it sounds like I would need to replace the entire top with new laminate if I choose that route. I need to price that option.

Laminate comes already attached to wood counters. All you have to do is cut it to length. That would seem like the easy way to go.

Wait until you have the floor in to see if it clashes. Holding a floor sample right next to a counter may make it seem jarring but with the distance between the two when it is installed it may not be bad at all.

Post photos then. Believe me, if it looks bad people will let you know. If it looks great you will hear it too.

Laminate doesn't always come attached to counters. You can buy just the laminate and glue it over your current counter or new plywood. DH has done it. He says it's not the easiest thing in the world; you have to be comfortable using tools and measuring accurately.

OT, but a ? for mom2sethc. I have a vanity like that with the tall column on the end. How do you have your stuff arranged in there so the back part can be useful & accessible?
