How do we feel about curtain lengths?
Comments (20)for the most part, i prefer to the floor or just above. i'm trying to plan draperies for the new house now but they will be nothing like what we had at the old house... when i did the downstairs at our first place we did puddled curtains. my bff is a decorator and has been in the business for a thousand years. he knows EVERYONE. so they were made by a woman he stole from a professional work room and expertly hung by two specialists who spent over nine hours at my house steaming, fussing and arranging the draperies. this was not a weekend job for them. they told me they had been at the douglas-zeta jones residence the day before. i paid them $500 (not bad considering the time spent) and was asked in advance to provide six different flavors of ben & jerry's ice cream. seemed fair to me. plus it was august, after all. when they finished, the drapes were perfect and glorious. everyone commented on them. they were stunning. and then, one day i decided to pull out my vacuum cleaner and do a quick once around. so i picked up one side of the drapes and vacuumed the floor behind and below. and then i tried to puddle them in the exact, picture perfect arrangement as styled by the ultra fabulous team with the ice cream obsession. i was heartbroken. it wasn't easy but after a long time (...who knows, maybe an hour?) i finally brought them back to an acceptable state. from that point on, i never touched them, they never moved. i vacuumed AROUND them, always careful not to disturb their perfectness again -until the day we moved. so, no more puddled anything for me. romans or to the floor. that's about as dramatic as i'm ever going again....See MoreHow do you feel about solid surface (Corian) shower walls vs tile?
Comments (117)Hi, anyone from Vancouver Canada? I have been trying to find a source for a Corian solid surface shower pan but am having a difficult time finding one. I've called a few bathroom supply stores and went to a few Home Depot and they only have the ugly acrylic ones and only in white, Corian.com does not even mention this type of product so why is that? If it's such a great product why wouldn't they advertise it?...See MoreQuestion about upholstery fabric style/name
Comments (9)It is hard to find things of that nice quality for a reasonable price. Like bedsheets...percale...wonderful things..still have some flat sheets my Mother purchased!!... how long ago?? that do not wear out and do not wrinkle no matter how many times they wave on the clothesline or get washed. Been thru too many sets of sheets the past 15 years. They are almost slimey thin....they get balled up knots on the surface, the wrinkle like crazy. When Burlington Mills shut down, I think someone began making sheets from recycled panty hose? Really. They are not any thicker than 2 pair worn together. And no, I am not going to pay 300 dollars for bed sheets. $30 to $60 is the limit, and they will be used till they are in shreds..typically the bottom sheet goes first, and I have been known to put that percale flat sheet on for a rotation till the top shreds next... Nuts....See MoreLandscape Fabric What do you think? (feel free to rant)
Comments (11)Good question! Landscape fabric works well to separate hardscape layers such as a crushed stone base for a patio or path from the soil beneath it, but that is its only real use. In something like 15 years here on the GW (now Houzz owned) forums I have read one person who had used landscape fabric in planting area for more a very few years and was still pleased with it. It needs to be totally covered to not break down in sunlight, and flapping gray edges are unattractive. Weeds root in from above from wind blown seeds and below from roots that were preexisting or that crept in from the lawn. It makes weed removal more difficult because the roots become entangled in the fabric. Landscape plant roots also get entangled in it as the roots search for the water and nutrients and oxygen that don’t move well through the fabric. It needs to be removed/cut back in order to plant. The soil loses organic matter that helps keep it healthy since the landscape fabric segregates the mulch from the soil, and then as any existing soil organic matter breaks down, there is nothing to replace it, so soil typically becomes compacted and less able to hold moisture as well as less fertile. As GG48 said, a good layer of mulch works as well and is much easier to remove weeds from, and it will slowly break down to improve soil tilth. I also like planting densely since many weeds need light for the seeds to germinate, so use a dense groundcover if you like your plants separate or invest in a scuffle hoe or light rake to scuffle up the mulch to expose weed seedling roots. Edge beds well to keep them separated from the lawn and any grass or weeds that might try creeping in from there. For now since it sounds like things are a bit out of control, see if you can hire a teenager to work with you for the summer. Weed an area and mulch it the same day, and then move on to another area. Once everything has been weeded and mulched, keeping it tidy is a matter of putting in some time while any new sprouts are still small so that weeds don’t have a chance to flower and go to seed. If it is still out of control, consider hiring ongoing help or returning beds to mown areas so that there is a size of garden that you can comfortable manage with whatever resources of people, tools, or energy you have available....See Morewish2okc
