need help wireing curcuit for 220v for my pond

have a pump that set up for 230v and would like to know the proper way to hook it up to the timer switch that is already out there wierd but i think its for 120.

Wire the timer for 230v and then hook the pump to it.

If you couldn't tell that was sarcasm. I gave an answer with as much info as was in the question.

What kind of motor?
How BIG is it? Amps/watts/Kw/HP?
What is the timer? Hard wired? Plug in? Single pole? Double pole?
How is it wired?

Exactly what wires are run out to the timer?
Conduit?
Cable?
Size?

The following is a very general discussion and may not apply to this situation. As Pete said, you've provided rather little detail.

If you have a 120 volt motorized timer, it may be possible to rewire it so that the timer motor is powered by 120 volts and the contacts switch a 240 volt load. BUT, there are some concerns.

1. If the timer isn't rated for 240 volts, using its contacts at that voltage would be a code violation, if not outright dangerous.

2. If the timer has a single pole switch, only one hot leg would be opened, making a proper separate DPST disconnect essential if it's not already there.

3. If you have only 120 volts at the remote location, you probably have only two current-carrying wires and a ground. You can't (safely) derive both 120 volts and 240 volts from this combination.

It might be possible to use a small transformer to operate the timer motor, but the cost would probably be nearly the same as replacing the timer with a 240 volt model.

Bottom line is - you're better off to either get a 240 volt timer to match this pump, or a 120 volt pump to match this timer.

Again, this is based on the limited information you provided. You may wish to offer more.

There should be,almost always is,a wiring diagram under the cover plate telling you how to wire for 110/220. If not contact the motor manufacturer if possible or post the motor brand and model number and any other relevant info. If someone out there has the same motor, they may have the info for you.The capacitor is only to give the needed boost for starting, then it's no longer "in the circuit"

yes, you guys are partially right. this is an installation for a friend of mines b&b. and, yes, i have checked me own qualifications. as an electrical engineer, i certainly understand what i am about to undertake...just that i do not have all the procedures down. if i ended up using 1 double-pole 20 amp breaker, would that not technically satisfy the load calculation? the griddle is rated at 2x3600 watts (16/16, with two cords). ======================================== all I can say is you either aren't actually an EE or you didn;t do well in school. An EE would most definately would not have asked the questions you have. I understand you may not understand the exact outlets or such but the last post of: "would that not technically satisfy the load calculation" says it all. If you do not understand electricity any better than this, you should not be undertaking anything of this sort. As well, since this is considered commercial electrical work, not only you, but possibly the owner cannot legally do such work without the proper licensure and permitting. Call a real electrician to do this right before you cause your friend a problem that will cost more than the $3k quoted. (I do think that is a bit high but without seeing the job or knowing where you are, it is hard to know for sure)

i have seen a lot of welders hooked up with 10/3 some hooked up 2 #6 with #8 ground i guess it up to how much $$$ you want to put in it. 10/3 will carry 60 amps #6 will carry it better Am I reading this right and where are you getting your information? You can burn down your own house but DO NOT give advice to someone else unless you are ready to BACK IT UP NEC 334.80 / 310.15 10/3 is only rated for 30 amps. I would suggest that anyone jumping in quoting code references, especially outside the realm of normal residential branch circuits, might want to consider actually looking at related code articles before making statements regarding work they cover. As was pointed out, there is a special section in the code book that deals with welders. Although the wisdom of installing a breaker larger than permitted for a general use circuit in a residence is questionable, NEC Article 630 does permit breakers larger than 30 AMP to be used on #10 wire for a welder, given certain welder characteristics. While I generally install conductors matched to the breaker size for residential welder use there is no code requirement to do so. The correct size wire and breaker for the welder should be available in the manufacturer's literature. In the unlikely chance this information isn't available the information in article 630 will provide the necessary for a compliant installation.

"Tap one of the legs and the white neutral to get your 110. Mount a fuse box next to where you tap off the 220 line and protect the new circuit with a 15 or 20 amp fuse." Ouch! That's not legal my my jurisdiction. I would suggest feeding the 10/3 into a small subpanel in the garage. Run a DP 30A breaker for the compressor and a separate SP 15A breaker from one of the hot legs, doesn't matter which, for the 120V circuit.
