How bout, a lamp and some small accessories like this.

I would put nothing on the chest that blocked the view of that beautiful painting.

In that respect, the jaguar is fine, but doesn't quite jibe with the painting. How about a large, low, brass bowl?

The probem with the jaguar for me is that it is facing the opposite direction from the way the person in the painting is facing - too much visual tension.

I would like to see a lamp with some gold tones to marry the colors in the background of the art with the color in the floor. I would like to see something more vertical, and with some movement to echo the movement in her clothing, and the curves of the bombay chest.

I thought this might work:

Put it on the right side of the chest, as if she is looking down at it.

I would then love a low matte black planter with airy greenery, soft beige dried hydrangea, artichokes, red berries, feathers and some curly willow or other branches for movement.

I like the picture dolfanz posted with something taller on one side. I don't think it would block the picture enough to take away from it.

I think this platter might look nice; maybe with a tiny bit of red popourri or a small red sphere.

Maybe something along the lines of this black wrought iron with a pillar in ivory or the red in the picture.

I think that something that looks hand-hewed and masculine to balance the feminine image and curves in the chest would be good.

I think your choice of simplicity is excellent. I agree that it would be better to flip the cat. However, I like that you didn't try to clutter that spot up with more than one nice thing. If you had something a bit more substantial in the black that doesn't come up more than a couple inches on the painting, that would look nice too. But, considering that the tabletop is small, anything large you put will obstruct the picture. And, I like how the black pulls out both the black in the picture AND in the floor tile.

Congrats on the LESS IS MORE look.

Maybe a wrought iron candlelabra style candle holder, under a runner in tones of the picture.

What great ideas everyone has. Thank you so much for your suggestions. Looks like I might have to bring a few things home to see what would look the best, or maybe find out just the way it is is the best way. I dont know. I do know that I would like something with red as other than that picture the entrance doesnt have any color. If I could convince DH to paint the room a shade of red my dilemma would be over!

I like the jaguar and the way it is now positioned. It keeps the eye traveling back and forth instead of all going into the wall.

I like it that way, too-it looks as though he is sneaking away from her and I like the little bit of visual tension that is created.

Thanks cyn427 for your post. Am I the only one that things I need some color in that area, like burgandy/red? As I mentioned before this painting is the only wall decor I have in this room, and the colors in the painting except for the red are the same throughtout the room. The wall color is actually same as some of the background color, does not look like in the photo for some reason, blacks and browns, whites are in the stairs and flooring and mouldings. Does this vignette not look boring...do I need more color here?

I think the bombe chest (sorry, misspelled it above - don�t know where my head was at!) has enough red tones in it that you would have to be careful about adding too much more red or burgundy. To me, that small grouping of red flowers in her hair is a fun little surprise. I did suggest adding some red berries in the arrangement you might put there, but those would be tiny, and just a hint of color.

I think it looks dramatic like it is. It has impact because it is so simple. The challenge with something else on the chest is that odd number items look best, so I think you would have to go with 3 items on the chest or one like you have it. I keep wanting to see something a litte taller or perhaps with more of an organic shape but I don't know what to suggest. I liked the brass bowl suggestion - it would add warmth - but I am no expert! I do like it as is though.

Thanks Les, I do like the idea of the arrangement you suggested, I am keeping that in mind. It would be a nice alternate to a flower arrrangment and I could add the touch of red as you say. I would need something else but not a lamp as I already have 2 wall sconces and one chandelier in that room which is sufficient for lighting. I really did like the lamp that you had suggested though.

katrina, thanks. It seems too simple to me for some reason, something is missing. I agree with you that I would need 3 items and definately something with some height if I replace the statue.

I think your entrance looks very cool just the way it is! (I wouldn't clutter it up.)

maureen, thanks. I am beginning to think maybe I am wrong and I should leave it alone, more posters seem to like it simple as is instead of adding more to it.

the only thing I would do is face the statue out a bit. I wouldn't add anything else.

I think it looks wonderful "as is". I can imagine walking into the area and being drawn to the lovely painting and then going "Oh!" as I got closer and saw the details on the sculpture and chest.

If you want to add a little surprise paint a mouse hole along the baseboard in the area the woman is looking. Weird thought I know but it just popped into my demented mind as I wondered what she is looking at.

rosesstink, that is the strangest suggestion! I actually have a mice/rat phobia so even a mouse hole gives me the creeps...I think I will pass on that suggestion...LOL

I think I have solved my color problem. I am going to change out the rug by the door. Right now it is a brown rug so I am going out to look for a more colorful rug, and see how that works.
