Cost of Rewiring a Lamp?
Comments (5)If you look at the receptacles in your home you will note that they are polarized, that is one slot is slightly longer that the other. The neutral side of the receptacle is slighly longer that the hot side. If you have three slot receptacles with the ground hole at the bottom, the neutral slot is on the left. Now, if you look at the lamp socket you will notice that one wire is soldered to the back of the socket. This is the hot side. The other wire is soldered to the side of the socket. This is the neutral. When you attach the wires to the plug, it is important that the hot wire from the back of the socket be attached to the smaller slot on the plug and the nuetral from the side of the socket be attached to the larger leg of the plug. This will keep the electrical current properly directed for safety. If you are rewiring a lamp and need a new socket, you can purchase new ones at most hardware stores that have screw connections so you don't have to solder connections. Also, lamp cord is also available at most hardwares. You will notice that one side of the the cord is striped. This is the neutral side which is what connects to the side of the socket. This is really the main issue to rewiring a lamp and once you get the hang of it you will be a pro....See MoreRe-wiring old lamps - is it really safe?
Comments (16)Some lamps have a velvet fabric to protect from scratches. Once you pull that off, you'll see the nut that keeps the whole thing together. It depends on the lamps. I'd try to take off the socket first. Sometimes you can just disconnect that and the whole wire will pull out. Thread a new wire, add new socket, bingo. You're pretty much done. BTW, it was BAKE cookies, not back cookies (for the record, I hate snickerdoodles!)...See MoreOld house - Unusual 3-way wiring problem
Comments (12)chezzrob, we must recognize that code wasn't always what it currently is. At some point in history, it was legal to switch the neutral. It was also legal to have individual conductors snaking around the walls and ceilings in all manner of unpredictable directions with twisted, soldered, and taped splices just "hanging around" in there. Think "grandfathered", and remember that we are not required to rewire our houses every time a new edition of NEC comes out. The original poster's installation is legal only because it was legal at the time of installation. You're certainly correct in that it does not, in any way, meet modern code. Regarding 2/3/4-way switching... the standard terminology applied to switches in the USA is for SPST (normal) swithes to be 2-way, SPDT to be 3-way, and straight/swap to be 4-way. ie, a normal single switch is a 2-way, two switches is a 3-way, and three (or more) switches is a 4-way configuration. I have NO IDEA why "they" decided to refer to them this way, but it is what it is. The only answer I've ever been given is that the number refers to the number of terminals on the switch, not counting ground. I don't believe this explanation myself, but it is nonetheless a good way to remember it....See Morerewireing info for a 1930's floor lamp with 4 sockets
Comments (3)How many switches does the lamp have and are they on the sockets or mounted on the base? I would also need to know if you will ever want to use the Mogul (The one large one) Because there are bulb adapters out there allowing you to put in a standard bulb. Also if the wiring is original I would replace everything and use only the base of the lamp and use a Polarized plug (One blade is wider then the other)...See Morebrickeyee
