10 Ways a Red Lamp Shade Can Sass Up a Room
Energize a neutral palette, refine a rustic look ... where a red shade goes, liveliness is sure to follow
A red light has come to signify many things, some racy, others utilitarian. Regardless of the meaning, a red light unmistakably draws attention, which makes it a fun and useful tool for interior decorating. Sassy and unexpected, they’re usually best in small doses. If you are putting a space together and have a case of the blahs, try adding a bright red lamp shade or base where you’d least expect it. I think you’ll love what it does for your room.
Red arc light. Red and black make a dynamic color combination. A red arc light and bar stools balance the dramatic black in this contemporary room, keeping it warm and playful.
Red workshop light. This might just be Santa’s workshop. Among all the tools and curiosities, the red light provides a visual center to rest the eye on.

Red transitional light. Technically a sconce, this red light defines this space as transitional — a style between traditional and contemporary. If you are putting together a space and are stumped by how to jazz up your neutral palette, try a punch of red. It works every time.
Red vanity light. Here’s another great example of how red lights can wake up a neutral space. Red mini shades have been bravely added to powder room vanity lights. Notice the red lights are the only red detail in the room, which is exactly why they work well.
Glam red industrial light. I just love these lights. Their industrial vibe is glammed up with red cords and hardware, creating a whimsical center for dining.
Red foyer light. A foyer or entry is a great space to add a piece of interest to. If you have a large enough entry to showcase a unique piece of furniture that creates a collected vibe, consider a red lamp to enhance that statement.
