Painting natural wood cabinets....need opinions, I know you have them.
Comments (28)I love your inspiration photo too, but with some caveats for your situation: The long view: "This kitchen is at one end of an open concept layout, so there is wood for as far as the eye can see." In picking a color to paint your cabinets -- even one as delicious as your inspiration photo -- you should think in terms of that color having a large effect on the remainder of the space. Light: Your photo is of your kitchen at night and minimally lit. For major changes, you need to think in terms of how it will look in daylight and/or with the full array of artificial light you would have on when using the kitchen. Option for adding color: The "painted uppers only" photo that richfield95 posted blows me away, but I am not sure how it would work with less imposing uppers. You might think in terms of painting with more than one color, depending of the opportunities you find in your kitchen. E.g., from a kitchen that sort of evolved in process, after and before. Had the turquoise turned out to be too overbearing, it could have been changed....See MoreNeed to make our stairs look presentable, but we have some limitations
Comments (13)I just wanted to post back with an update because we finally finished the project yesterday (except for a tiny detail up on the landing to address) and we LOVE how it came out. Everyone we talked to said we should be using paint and that stain wouldn't look good. Part of that is because we initially boxed ourselves in on what could be done with the landing. But on the steps themselves, some folks on the various forums, our GC, people at the hardware store all sorta frowned on gel stain and said we wouldn't be able to achieve what we wanted. I'm happy we tried anyway. I don't consider myself handy and usually don't do my own work, but I spent a couple hundred bucks in supplies and just dove in. Watching a lot of youtube videos, then getting to work sanding (and sanding and sanding and vacuuming and vacuuming and vacuuming), stripping paint, pulling staples, filling holes and YES, staining. I think the pics below speak for themselves. Is the job perfect, NO it is isn't. Does it look better than if we just gave up and painted, YES i really think it does. We didn't even need to go the carpet runner route because the stairs really came out looking so much better than expected. We were even able to go right over our railings with the same stain to better match the colors. Thought I'd leave some pics here for anyone else brave enough to give it a try! EDIT: Updated this post because i forgot about a lot of the parameters we artificially put in place for ourselves in the beginning of this project and that definitely influenced what everyone was recommending. I'll get into the whole landing aspect in a couple days as soon as we finish that up!...See MoreNeed recommendations for painting stairs
Comments (13)You don’t have gray floors and gray walls like your comparison photo. I don’t think painting your rails white will look good, and it will call a lot of attention to the rails, to give a kind of prison or factory effect — where as now, the rails just kind of disappear to the eye. Any chance you can hide your TV behind doors or cabinetry? Having plants or other homey arrangements there would soften the appearance of the rails. Something else I think you might experiment with is to bring more fruity orange colors and themes into the room, along with some dark leaf greens and olive greens. I’m just talking about replacing the red pillows, adding citrus and leaves to the decorative items on the table — that sort of thing. Fruit orchard feeling will go better with the woods and brown. Save the big reds for when you replace the railings with metal or glass and paint the walls something other than clay....See MoreGrandfather clocks. Do you love them? Hate them...any opinions welcome
Comments (79)When I was very small living on Long Island my mother would sit me down to watch Captain Kangaroo and my most favorite part of the program was Grand Father Clock. Every day I waited for him to actually say something that made sense but he never did. I lived disappointed. I would actually like to have a nice grandfather clock. I like the sound. I had a really nice long wall clock my father-in-law bought me but my ex very much wanted it because we lost most of the things he gave us in a house fire and he had died. It needed work because of the fire, I wonder if he actually got it fixed. The town we lived in had a really good clock repair. Mine had a beautiful Westminster chime. Not too loud....See Morerj56
