Do you love or hate your counter height dining?
Comments (30)What makes a chair comfortable isn't the padding or lack thereof. It's all about the shape of the seat and the shape of the back and the angle where the back of the chair meets the seat. I have a wood desk chair with a shaped seat that is far more comfortable than many padded chairs I've sat in. And for dining chairs, another big factor is the height of the seat in combination with the height of the table. If you want comfortable seating in your dining room, that will encourage people to linger after a meal, you really need to test the table and chairs together. I suspect that when people say a dining chair is comfortable, it isn't just the chair; it's also the way the chair and the table work together that makes the seat so comfortable. I'm sure it's possible to get a very comfortable counter height dining set, just as I know it is possible to get an uncomfortable regular table height dining set. So whatever you get, I hope you can test sit it first....See MoreBowl Pendants - Love them or hate them?
Comments (17)Thanks for the feedback everyone. roseabbey: You know until I was pulling the photos together for the post I hadn't viewed them as the 2 distinct groupings. It was all just floating around in my head. Doing that really does show up just how over-the-top the chandelier is. The bowl continues to grow on me. dkitchenreno & faleash: Good to hear from 2 that are using the bowls as your choice. I think in all the photos I viewed there were probably less than a handful that did go that route. I'll call you trail blazers! :) mikeandbarb: I thought of the cleaning issue but not of the breakage issue. I'll check in to whether it is a standard size bowl for the feasibility of replacement if that should ever happen. So, thank you one and all. You have helped me tremendously to get off the fence and get it done so I can cross another item off the list....See MoreOpinions and Suggestions Welcome+ Lots of Pics for SuziNJ
Comments (18)i like the look of the 'encased' stove also - just not that close to the actual stove. i'd feel too closed in. it's good you put up the blocks to try it out for a few days. i've seen them where the 'side walls' are farther away - like to the end of the counter to the left of your stove and maybe 1 cabinet more to the right of it. somone did that on here - the spanish kitchen - and i loved it! but she had a BIG space for her stove. but again, everyone is different. i don't like closed spaces or heights. I think i'd also move the double ovens over to the end of the other counter run - to the right of the sink. you'd have the island to mix and put things together, then just turn around and pop it into the oven. if making cookies you could pull them out of the oven and slide them onto the counter top behind. pop another sheet of cookies into the oven. and just have a counter run to the right of the fridge too. i think it'd look more open in the area by the door on the left of your stove area if that wall wasn't floor to ceiling cabinets/appliances too. it looks a bit congested in that area....See MoreHistoric floor questions, thoughts and opinions welcome!
Comments (6)I think the "straw" is the jute backing for linoleum. Many houses around here have a subfloor of wide 1/2" thick roughcut hemlock then a finished floor of boards that may or may not be tongue and groove. I'm all for keeping historical context but the floor in the kitchen area may be past its usefulness. I think a flooring person will tell you that. I have a similar quandary in my house. I've decided to chemically strip the small area with lead paint and then try to do a light sanding with a rented floor pad sander (not a drum sander). It's going to take some time as those machines are slow. I've done it once before on a different house and the floors looked like a refinished piece of furniture....See MoreRelated Professionals
