DH says he doesnt think he would like the ticking of the clock, so now I guess I am back to square one. WTH do I put in that spot?

Why not put the clock there as you wish, but just don't wind it so it doesn't tick and doesn't chime? Maybe set it for a special time that means something to you - the time of your first date, or wedding or a child's birth or whatever. As the old saying goes, twice a day it will be right!

Lots of people have non-working clocks that they have collected for the look, particularly antiques.

As for it looking odd there, unless you had told me, I would never know looking down the hall that that is a master bedroom. Though even if I did, what is the issue? I don't think the 'decor police' will come and take you away!

I am looking for something that will sit on the floor not just hang on the wall, so tapesttry is out but thanks for the suggestion.

I love the sound of the chimes, that was one of the reasons we bought the clock so not having it working is not an option.

How about a very realistic looking artificial plant? The plant looks nice there. I can't see the rest of the room, so hard to say what else would fit. Some thoughts: maybe a large mirror that leans against the wall; a high back chair; a water feature. In my room, I have filled what would be empty space with my ironing board (although it does have a nice cover) LOL!

A sculpture, maybe on a stand?

You could hang "something" with a piece beneath, so the effect is like that of something sitting on the floor.
A friend had an entrance very like yours to a room and she hung an antique obi with a small Chinese chest beneath...looked wonderful! Another consideration might be a small etagiere but it would have to be just right....and you might look for years to find it.
Another thought....a line of vertically hung pictures with a small chest or bench beneath.
The clock would look wonderful there....but as has been said....the ticking and chime would drive me bonkers. I even hear the small French clock with the little bell chime, down stairs when I am in bed up stairs!

I agree, a curio cabinet would be beautiful in that spot (especially one that has dark wood & about the same width or a little wider as a grandfather clock).
We too have a grandfather clock that no longer works, we have it in our DR....Also an antique clock I had repaired only to discover that I can't concentrate with the constant tic toc (it can't be silenced) so right now it's mostly decorative.

My parents had a grandmother clock in the hallway just outside my bedroom when I was growing up and I never heard it unless I was listening for it. I think it would be stunning in that spot if the ticking and chimes wouldn't bother you.

I had to look up the work etagiere as I didnt know what it was. If I could find the "right" one I think it would look great there. I didnt want furniture there because of the heavy look but a etagiere is very light and airy looking. A curio cabinet could also work as well as long as it had more glass than wood. I think I will keep my eye open on craig's list and see what comes up. I also like the idea of a sculpture something that has height. I guess I need to be patient and wait for the right thing to come along. My preference would have been a real plant, I dont like artifical ones, havent seen one yet that looks real to me, but as I said the distance from the window is too much for the ones I have tried.

We have a Grandfather clock but don't keep it ticking. I think it would be a great spot for one and you could find one whose height would work well. Not all are super tall.

But, anything you put in that area should be special to you and that you truly love.

On my wish list for "someday" is a clock in this style (saw a similar one while watching "You've Got Mail" and have been salivating ever since! LOL):

I'd do either a leaner mirror or some sort of tall, narrow cabinet (in a white finish) with glass panels.

I think the spot is perfect for the clock! What a lovely frame and focus into that hallway-it would be gorgeous! Turn it off- turn it on-magnificent placement-I would have to do it!

I think a mirror would make the hallway look too long, which is sort of is already, see photo

We had a huge old grandfather clock. It never kept anyone awake. You get used to it and don't even notice as pamghatten and southernheart said. Now, guests did tend to notice, but only on their first night! :)

I grew up with my bedroom on the other side of our foyer that contained my mother's precious grandfather clock.

That thing chimed every half hour and on the hour and kept me awake all the time. I was forever begging my mother to turn it off, pleading, but she wouldn't do it. I would go in and stop the pendulum all the time and she would start it back up again.
I really resented her for that.

I have a suggestion. Since you love the clock you have, love the sound and presumably enjoy it where it is, would you consider getting another clock? You know..... buying an old clock that isn't in working condition might be the answer! You don't need to worry about the ticking OR the chiming! It's all about the look, right ??!!

dlm, I dont really like where the block is now. It is hidden behind the french doors in our home office, in a corner. It is such a beautiul piece I wasnt happy putting in that location but at the time, we couldnt find any other spot where it looked balanced in the room. I am still trying to convince DH to move the clock.

Yep you will need to convince DH as it will look stunning-turn it off. Sleep like a baby.

Finally convinced DH to try it in the bedroom. So what do you think?

How about a floor fountain? They have them in all kinds of finish and heights. A bit expensive but really a wow feature.

I would love the sound of the fountain probably, but I would be concerned about the humidity factor.

I love it there. A good place for all to see its beauty while walking down hallway.

Before, the plant looked like it was one of those "I'll stick this here until I find something better" things. The clock looks like you meant for it to be there, and it adds some interest,warmth and sparkle there, as well as visually shortening the long corridor feel.

Just one thought, and I don't know for sure how it would look until I saw it. I would like to see the piece of furniture that is to the left of the clock (is it a nightstand or something?) moved left until you can no longer see it from the hallway. Then move the clock over to the left, so it is centered visually more between the left side of the doorway and the front edge of the cabinet that you see there to the right.

In essence, I am looking for the same amount of baseboard to be visible on both sides of the clock from the hallway.
FWIW, I would get rid of that little plant stand and tiny plant in front of the artwork on the left side. It doesn't add anything to the space, and you don't need it there - the art is substantial enough.

Love it! I think it looks perfect there. As Les said, it looks like you purchased it especially for that spot and it adds some sparkle as well. Did you leave it run and try sleeping with it running? I'll bet it will only take a night or two to get used to it.

We have a grandfather clock also and I love to hear it. Problem is, we have had it for 25 years and I only hear it when I make a point to listen for it. Have gotten so used to it that I only notice it when I forget to wind it and it doesn't chime! Our clock chimes 4 on the 1/4 hour, 8 on the 1/2 hour, 12 on the 3/4 hour and 16 on the hour plus it chimes the number of times for the hour. So at midnight and noon it chimes 28 times! When the kids come to visit I always have to stop it as they complain about the "noise".

Thanks everyone, I think I am going to keep it there. The clock isnt running, that was the one request DH made if we moved the clock.

Les, it is the nightstand that you see on the left. I cant move it any closer to the bed. If I had thought at the time of construction, I should have had the fireplace moved a foot over to the left so the nightstand wouldnt show in the hallway. Right now the bed is centered on the fireplace which is should be. I like that the clock is centered in the middle of the transom. There is actually 2 feet on each side of the clock so it does look balanced once you are in the room.

Also I know what you mean about the plant and stand. I have tried it before without anything there and it just looks unbalanced to me, all the furniture is on one side of the room. Looking down the hall from the master, it looks even more unbalanced imo without something under the pictures. Maybe the plant stand isnt the right piece for there but I havent found anything to replace it.

I think it looks much better without the plant stand. It doesn't really "balance" the space imho, because it doesn't look unbalanced without it. Even with something else there it might look too predictable (hang a picture, put a piece of furniture under it) and crowded - too much going on- your eye stutters down the hallway. The art looks really perfect with nothing under it. Maybe you could try living without it and see if your eye gets used to seeing that spot with just the beautiful art?

I like it, too. It looks perfect lined up with the transom. If you feel as though you really need something under the paintings, have you considered moving the chest on the right near the clock to the spot where your smaller table is (entrance, perhaps?) and putting that table under the diptych? Whatever you do, it is such a marvelous and lovely space that I can't imagine it looking bad!

Bumblebeez, our clock was set to the Westminster chimes and went off every 15 minutes with one section at the quarter hour, two at the half, three at the 45-minute point and the entire chime sequence at the hour with the requisite number of strikes for the hour. I had to listen on purpose to notice it. When I inherited it, it was too tall for our eight-foot ceilings. Very sad. We let our son sell it for seed money for his business. I still miss it, but it was just too grand for the house.

What a beautiful hallway! I think the clock looks great there as you are walking down the hall. I also like the hallway without the little plant and stand, too. It's a shame you can't have the clock running....I love hearing the ticking and chiming and it would be soothing to me. Maybe your husband could try letting it run a few nights and he might not even notice it after a while.

I removed the plant stand for now to see if maybe it will grow on me....lets see how long before DH notices...could be a couple of weeks!

cyn, I learned a new work today.....diptych.
I might try that arrangement, as to me the end of the hallway looks heavy right now but that is a dresser that we put clothes so DH might not be too happy with that move. Its funny before he retired, he never got involved with decorating. Where the small table is, opposite that wall is the home office.

Yeah, I'm not loving it either. How about switching them so the lighter table is near the rug and the chest is on the bare floor? Bear in mind that one of my sick hobbies is moving furniture around. Be warned: I do frequently end up putting everything right back where it was. :)

Okay, my take is that it is SO much better with nothing where the plant stand was. A nice flow to the hallway, not a stutter as someone else put it.

I would leave the heavy chest in the entry area, and find a completely new home for the Queen Anne console table. It just is too spindly.

I understand about not being able to move the nightstand. Sometimes there is only so much room to place things! But what I wonder is if you could pull the bedroom entry doors away from the open position on each side just a few inches, which visually would block the view of the nightstand and create a white frame all around the entrance to focus the view on the clock.

Okay, I didn't say this before because I knew you just wanted opinions about whether the clock looked good in the bedroom (and I think it does), but now we all have you moving everything around again. So I decided to just write what I'd originally thought: Would you consider putting the clock where the curvy table and art was originally and switch them out? I love a large clock like that in an entry/hallway. Can't remember if last year you tried that table in the bedroom and it might not be right, but I think looking at your painting through the door would be wonderful...or maybe the chest from the bedroom under it and the curvy table where the chest started out in the bedroom? Sorry..I just had to say it.

Cyn, I think that chest is too deep to put in the foyer. It is actually a dresser, I think I am going to put it back into the bedroom.

Les, I think if I replace the splindley table with something heavier looking, it will make that end of the hallway seem even heavier looking imo. I think I am going to keep the two pieces where they were orginally and for now leave the space under the diptych empty for now and see if I can get used to it.

olychic, if I put the clock in the hallway as you suggest, I will be the only one that sees the beautiful front of the clock, as those double doors are the doors to the home office. Also I dont care for the look of the clock from the sideview too much, the beauty of it is in the front but thanks for the suggestion.

I scanned quickly so I could see the pretty pics, love your home, so I dont know if anyone suggested this. Put the clock where the smaller hall table is (its still somewhat viewable there) and put the larger chest at the end of the hall, in your room, and the smaller table where the chest is. I like the idea of a dresser or bomb chest right at the end of that hall, plus its a place to put phones or things in a tray or basket as you enter the room.

Love the clock in its new place-but can do without the heavy chest under the picture. A wonderful and beautiful setting. Trust your instincts with the table placements in the hallway-it could never be anything but lovely!
