google finds the old posts why not the forum?

I am so frustrated and confused. I was trying to locate some old threads where I had asked for advice on colors. The replies I got were extremely helpful, PLUS I had posted some good photos. Rather than totally re-hash everything, I searched for the posts on google and found the thread. To clarify the OLD post was started in FEB2010 (so not THAT old).I was able (or so I thought?) to log in and then post a response to the thread. This was on Tuesday at about 7pm. Then I saw that there were some "ISSUES" with the forum and figured that was why I didn't see my post. So Wednesday morning, I sent an email asking about it. ( I was able to locate the post through google, and it DID show my last response). I included the link to all this.

First of all, wouldn't you think that I would have gotten a response about it OR if they were just able to fix it, at least see the post? Yeah, so did I. So yesterday in the evening I sent another.

Well I have not received any acknowledgment (other than the automated"Your email has been sent" when I first wrote it) and I do not see the updated post.

So bear with me as I might just try it again...and let's see if this at least brings it up...

The GardenWeb search engine has alwas been weak. And yes, many of us wish GardenWeb would be more responsive to our requests. I wish they were more active in removing spammers and would make it easier to report spam by making a one-click to report a post. BUT it's a free service to us and they can run their website any way they want.

The work-around for all of us on searches is to use outside search engines. It might help others if you posted on how to do it.

I did a Google search a few days ago for something, don't remember what now, and it brought up old threads from 2005.
Interesting reading! Some old-timers were there, but lots of posters I had never heard of.

I THINK I may have found your old post - in kinda a backwards way. I realized a while back that our posts from here appear on Google. That worried me some cause when you post here, you kinda feel you know the people who will be reading it. Anyway, I typed in Baltimore Checkerspot and it gave me 67 pages of places to go. I went through those and found two by "berngirl" but not yours. Then I typed in Baltimore Checkerspot on Gardenweb and it gave me fewer, some of the ones I had already checked and others. I found one that was titled "Chelone Lyonni Hot Lips and Baltimore Checkerspot" posted by Zebz 7 on may 29, 07. Emmayct, you responded to that one a couple of times SO MAYBE that is what you are looking for? I didn't go any further to see if you had more but if you can't find it on here, go to Google and see what you can find. I have used this method a few times and have always found what I was looking for. Sometimes it just takes scanning pages to do so. Hope this helps others, too.

Threads on GW are never deleted.....unless they create some sort of unpleasant controversy or argument or are against GW policy and even then, just the offensive or objectionable responses are edited out. Eventually they age out and do get archived and are found only by doing searches, both here on GW and by topic with other search engines. Google still turns up comments I made on another gardening forum-type message board I participated in more than a decade ago! But there is no limit on responding to GW threads regardless how old they are. Like rhizo says, the old threads only get resurrected if new posters tack on to them. For some odd reason, few seem to be able to a) read the date and realize the thread is multiple years old and very stale and b) read the forum instructions and post their own question in a new thread if not answered directly in a previous, old thread. And then there are the spammers who have nothing of any importance to say and just like to stir things up......not much we can do about it.

There is also Garden Voices, but I am not sure who handles that GW section where can link to your blog and put in a feed to it. Use the "contact us" link that's at the bottom of every GW page and ask them how to go about getting your blog onto Garden Voices. Here is a link that might be useful: Garden Voices

Always use the search box on the bottom of the page rather than the top! One further note: Threads drop off the Forum list about 6-8 weeks after the last post. So, if you have a thread that no one's posted to in the past couple of months, it will most likely have rolled off the Forum list and no longer be found when you do a search. Sometimes, a Google search will find an old thread, but there's no guarantee and, in my experience, you usually don't find them. However, IF you bookmarked the thread and it had at least one post after November/December 2007, you will probably be able to bring it up via the bookmark. [Posting to a thread after it's dropped of will not get it back on the list, but the later post(s) will show up if anyone links to the thread directly.] BTW...the 6-8 weeks is an estimate. It depends on how active the Forum is. In the case of Kitchens, we have 67 pages to the thread list...but if you look at that page you'll notice that the "oldest" post date/time right now (as I type) is Fri, Dec 5, 08 at 16:03

GW wasn't any better under Spike's control. Nothing has changed since I first found this place almost 10 years ago. There are a lot of free sites with much better service. There's such a wealth of knowledge shared within these walls and it's unfortunate that the site isn't more user friendly.

I know I know - for what I pay for this I really shouldn't complain..but it gets so frustrating.
Anyway since you suggested I post my workaround method... sI remembered some of the more unusual words in the post- one of them was needlepoint navy.(scary what trivia my brain retains)

So I put "needlepoint navy" in quotes just like that in the google search bar. Then a few possibilities came up, one of which was this. I just tried it now, and it didn't work, but thankfully it worked before.
My suggestion is to put in whatever unique definite words you can recall in the google search box and chances are it will bring up a long lost post.

natal...I dunno. I felt like we got HEARD when Spike was running things...but maybe it was just because there was less traffic on the site. I do know the landscape design forum was more fun "back in the day."

I love the info on these forums....but the forum itself is really outdated. We are not able to quote, show an "avatar" picture etc.

To narrow the search down you can put the following in the Google search bar:
site:ths.gardenweb.com , and then a search term like user name, a color, whatever. This will let you search the all the Gardenweb forums.

If you want to restrict the search to a certain forum, like this one, you would use the following search:
site:ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/decor , and then whatever search terms you're looking for.

Never have been able to make rhyme or reason out of GW search results. I usually ditch it for Google, too.

Wasn't there a post earlier this year by mitch, over on Conversations side, where she had managed to pull up some older threads? Posts she accessed were not ancient, but from past few years? IIRC changing the first couple letters in the address bar accessed the forum in it's prior state. (I'm searching Conversations but can't locate thread yet.)

There's the Wayback Machine. Talk about time travel, lol. Some good memories and missed friends from those days. But that's further back, and sometimes clicking on a thread will display all the posts, other times not.
