Something bright and live as red or blue for a warm feeling.
Or for something more sober dark colors (brown, purple or even black).

I think you need to get away from the blues. The gray of the roof competes with the blue-gray of the shutters. The door is a completely different blue and none of the 3 work well together. What about the classic look with black shutters and a bight red door?

The door seems to need some kind of pediment above it, too, to give it more weight. Or, since you already have the half-round step below, you could add some kind of small cover/canopy built above the door to keep you dry as you open the door. I'll try to post a pic of what I'm thinking -- I have a wiggly child on my lap and can't think straight! :)

Hey - what is my house doing in your photo? Seriously, I have the exact house.

My plan and I think it could work for you as well is to go black. Black front door & black storm door. I have made a study of this issue and entries look a lot better if the storm and the front door are the same color. The door won't look so skinny. I have the same issue now w/ a red door and white storm.

Because your siding color is very subtle, using white trim is not going to give that crisp contrast that usually makes that look so appealing. Is your house facade generally in full sun like the picture? That makes a big difference, too as those subtle colors get washed out.

I'd keep it a study in neutrals and go darker with the trim, pull in the gray from the roof and the siding beige and pick a greige color for all the trim, use a darker version of the same thing for the shutters and possibly the doors Or use a burst of color for the doors if you like color, but I'd keep it a deep color, nothing too bright or pastel.

Hard to specify colors but I'd start with a few from the B/M Historical collection - look at Copely Grey, Sandy Hook Gray, Sag Harbor Gray, Fairview Taupe, even Providence Olive and Hampshire Gray. In bright sun like that you'll just have to experiment and see what undertones become the most prominent. The green undertones could totally disappear and you could be left with a really nice, rich neutral which gives a lot of depth. Something like Dinner Party Red could be beautiful.

A deep grey-blue for the shutters, and a rich golden yellow for the door, like the color of the deep golden yellow mums you see in the fall.

Not that you asked, but I would also try to carry some of the stone look fromthe walkway up to the house, perhaps as edging for the planting beds. Maybe move around some bushes down the road so the two sides donÂt look so completely different.

Thanks to all of you! Your insight is wonderful! I have to careful about going too grey because my neighbor across the street has gray shutters and a bright red door. But if I went with dinner party red and more of a green-gray shutter concept, I think I would be ok. I get a lot of morning sun, but afternoon shade. In the winter I lose most of the greenery, but the sun isn't bleeding the house color either. I love glossy black doors too...but light fixtures are in brown family. Does that matter? Since your storm door is white -- I vote for a fresh glossy white door. The combination would make the whole door area look more co-hesive -- and therefore visually larger. Add black door knocker.

Add crisp black lanterns to each side -- and spray the urns into black too.

And then perhaps go for dark gray on the shutters -- to blend in the color of the roof tiles.

I thought it is so pretty as it is. I like your colors, kind of Martha Stewart colors. Fresh and not heavy looking. But as the other poster said I would look at similar house style pictures and find something you love. I wouldn't do much except if you want to just do the door something you like. Sorry for not suggesting but I just like you house as it is!

Colors can send a warm, welcoming message or a cold, disturbing one. Front doors offer an opportunity for personal expression. Choose a color that best expresses your individuality or the feel of the household.
