glass topped chest of drawers
Comments (9)Thanks for the encouragement. It appears that the yellowish color was the original finish, as there is raw wood under, no stain or varnish/lacquer. I'll think I'll keep the glass and put a nice fabric under it. I've already reglued the loose veneer and started filling in some of the spots where it's missing. It appears to be a good quality piece. The ring pulls are screwed on in the usual way, but the holes under the pulls are beveled to accomodate the parts that extend through the drawer fronts, and the pulls have a tiny nail at the bottom to keep them from spinning around. How many drawers have I seen with circular marks where the pulls spun around when the screw was loose? Also, the three drawers are graduated in size, and the decorative carvings wrap around the exterior of the three drawers as a unit, ie. the center one only has carvings at the sides, etc. The only problem is that I may end up using it in another room as a storage piece, which means I now have to continue the search for a chest for my bedroom. I guess I'll decide when it's done where to use it. The drawers are deeper than normal, making it great for storage....See MoreSmall chest/dressers in dining and living rooms
Comments (8)The chest and dresser look great! DH and I have what we call FSS, flat surface syndrome. If there is a flat surface, we tend to pile stuff on it. I put a chest by the front door also for the same reasons, keys, wallet, cell phone, etc. All kinds of other junk got piled there too and it was always a mess. So I 'scaped' it. I cleared out the top drawer for the keys, wallet, etc. I put a nice mirror over the chest, a small lamp on top, and some other decorative items. It looked so good we didn't want to mess it up with 'junk', so it still functioned but looked good all the time. Mommabird, I'm so glad you are now enjoying your environment and putting your mark on it. You have done a lot of very hard work and are an inspiration. Comments (10)Somewhere in time a bedroom SET was designed with a place for him and a place for her to store clothes in drawers. Because furniture manufacturers sell suits this way does not mean ya have to live with their vision. Get the pieces that will service your needs. I find the newer "dressing room/closets" very curious. They seem to go along with not having "dressers" of any sort. I wonder at why? What are people using their bedrooms for if not for dressing/ sleeping and why is a dresser such an eyesore to have? I do not comprehend reading/lounging in a far off room when I have spent much time and effort to make my living room/family rooms welcoming and comfortable. JMHO. But I digress...GET WHAT YOU WANT!!...See MoreReconditioning my parents' Midcentury chest of drawers?
Comments (29)message me if you want me to do it. if you bring it over and pick it up, I can have it done in a jiffy! BTW, it's listed as Raymond Lowey for Mengel. It's white oak, cerused. (on the top. liming wax is mixed into the grain) here's the original two tone finish and how those handles are supposed to look! (this is from Chairish and it's selling for $3800!! doesn't mean they'll get that, but I guess it's rather rare!) 1stdibs has it too https://www.1stdibs.com/creators/mengel-furniture-co/furniture/storage-case-pieces/dressers/ I could ceruse it. now that would look awesome. would cost more because it's a ton of work, but that graining you have is perfect for cerusing. slightly diff model $4500 on 1st dibs all one tone and one that's painted they had two on 1stdibs that sold for over 4K, I bet. https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/storage-case-pieces/dressers/ebonized-dresser-raymond-loewy-mengel-furniture/id-f_7777353/ all black and beautiful. I love this version. It's stunning in ebony. with this I'd do the inner drawers in a cobalt lacquer. ( I do colored inner drawers on a lot of my pieces)...See Moresusanlynn2012
