Small chest/dressers in dining and living rooms

I have two small dressers I got at antique stores. One is about 3' wider, cherry finish, from the 1930's with 4 drawers. I have it in the living room beside the front door. The top drawer is where I store extension cords and candles. The other 3 drawers have board games. The top is the "drop it here" space everyone needs by a door! Wallets, keys, etc get stored there.

In my dining room I have a very small dresser that's only about 18 inches wide. It fits perfectly in a little "nook" between the doorway from the kitchen & the doorway into the living room. It has 5 drawers. The bottom drawer has the phone book. The other 4 drawers have school supplies (paper, notebooks, pens, calculator, stapler, etc).

I find these pieces of bedroom furniture fit exactly what I need in these two rooms. They even look really cute and "unexpected" in these rooms.

I will try to get pictures and upload them tomorrow. My camera's flash isn't great, so pictures come out better during the day.

I just wanted to share this tip - try putting furniture in non-traditional places.

Here's the one in the dining room. I think it's from the 60's. I'd like to get new drawer pulls but don't really know what type would look good. Does anyone have suggestions?

Ignore the floor. I have it torn up. I'm laying new flooring in the whole first floor. The dining room and kitchen are stripped down to the plywood underlayment. I'm starting on them tonight. The same Pergo will run seamlessly into both rooms.

"can 11.5 x 16 work for dining?" That's going to be hard for anyone else to answer without seeing your floor plan, because you may need to account for walkways, door swings, etc. (Also we don't know the size and shape of the table you are trying to fit, how many people you want to seat, or if there will be other furniture in the room.) In general, I've seen guidelines of 30" to 48" from table edge to wall, with 30" being the minimum and more being better. Horizontally at least 24" per person with more at the ends (for leg room), and possibly more depending on the size of your chairs and your guests. Create a layout drawn to scale, with your table drawn to scale in it.

I totally agree with RL Relocation. A light color (doesn't have to be white or off white) will highlight the great woodwork and floors, which are a signature feature of your bungalow. There are lots of blues and greens out there that would work - and you don't have to limit yourself to those two - if you happen to love lavender for example. You have already looked at a blue similar (but darker) to the blue in the lampshade - so that is a starting point. Also the green on that throw pillow. I suggest this a lot, but if it were my house I would also be looking for a nice complimentary color to put on the ceilings. Ceiling white is so boring and often really doesn't look good with the rest of the room. For example - my kitchen walls are a pale green-blue, with whitish trim, and on the ceiling I used Valspar Transparent (which doesn't look IRL anything like the color shown online, unless they have changed it since 2013). In the can it looks pale blue, but in my north facing room kitchen it is a soft warm greenish off white. There are lots of examples of rooms with colored ceilings on line-- take a look.

I don’t know if you ever finished your kitchen, but in case you did not, and in case others come across this thread, I thought I would tell what we did. We remodeled our kitchen using a 24 year-old high end kitchen from a kitchen charity reseller (Green Demolitions). It had a huge island that I could fit into our space if we did not have a kitchen table. I have lifelong knee problems and could hardly rise off a regular chair height, so moving to 24” kitchen stools sounded like a solution. We went with the island, with space for four to comfortably sit. It turns out that my knees don’t much like sitting on stools, either. We are a family of two and take our meals in our recliners, anyhow. The issue became how to have people over and sit comfortably. Then I discovered convertible furniture of Italian design! They make coffee tables that rise up on scissor legs to dining height with tops that swivel 90 degrees and open like a book, doubling their size. There are other designs as well, all creating full size dining tables. We found a leather sofa at Macy’s that has a seat height of 20” and we keep our old dining chairs in the basement to bring out when people visit. Our family room is now easily and quickly converted to a dining room with banquette seating. Here is where I got our table. Where and how do you access the sofas? It looks like there is barely any room to walk around them to go sit down. And from where do you enter? Is that big round thing on the right supposed to be a hanging lamp from ceiling? If so, that space needs to be utilized. Or is it a round table?? Are those windows next to it? And the dark square shape in front of kitchen counter - is it a chair or... what? First, since your kitchen counter and wall to the patio are both angled, could you angle your loveseat and place it where the TV is now? Then, we'll just have to help you figure out where to put TV and big sofa, haha. You do have a bit too much furniture for this space, if the dimensions are scaled correctly. Can you sell the sofa and get a smaller one? These pieces look gigantic in that space. Photos of room would be helpful. I can see this image big and fine on my laptop, but room pics would help.

Yes, those handles on the second pic look dated from the "Early American" furniture era of the 1960's. Can you possibly find brushed nickel handles? There was a catalog I used to get, "Restoration Hardware" which may have some examples of attractive drawer pulls. The top pic looks terrific, tucked next to the door.

I love having dressers in unusual places.

The molding at top and bottom of your little chest looks almost mid-century modern.
What's the distance between the holes?

These might look nice--the lines on them might mimic the lines in that molding

Talley Sue - those brass ones you linked are PERFECT. I love them! I will have to order 2 sets. They come in sets of 4, and my little chest has 5 drawers.

I originally bought the chest intending to paint it. That was 2 years ago and the finish has grown on me. I think with those cool brass pulls, it wouldn't even need painted.

I finally ordered the brass drawer pulls this evening! I had to order 2 sets since there are 5 drawers in my little dresser. I have a built in in my hall with 3 drawers. I can use the other 3 drawer pulls there! Once I figured that out, I decided go go ahead and order them, even though they are expensive!

Once I get them, and the floor & trim done, I'll post an updated picture.

The chest and dresser look great! DH and I have what we call FSS, flat surface syndrome. If there is a flat surface, we tend to pile stuff on it.

I put a chest by the front door also for the same reasons, keys, wallet, cell phone, etc. All kinds of other junk got piled there too and it was always a mess. So I 'scaped' it. I cleared out the top drawer for the keys, wallet, etc. I put a nice mirror over the chest, a small lamp on top, and some other decorative items. It looked so good we didn't want to mess it up with 'junk', so it still functioned but looked good all the time.

Mommabird, I'm so glad you are now enjoying your environment and putting your mark on it. You have done a lot of very hard work and are an inspiration.
