Stencil immitation of wallpaper

I am almost finished my dining room now. Today we did the feature wall stencil. Unfortunately, it is really hard to get a good picture because the crystal chandelier casts shadows. I took one earlier but it isn't great.

I am posting my inspiration picture and the wall we did. I don't think the pics do it justice but need to wait until it is light out to get better ones and didn't want to wait. :)

You already have an "accent wall" in that the striking colors you have used, already make quite a statement. I don't think I would try to highlight any specific wall in either of those two rooms. I applaud your courage in using those colors and I like them a lot! I think you should get your new furniture in there before you do anything else to the walls. Once the furniture is in place and you have re-evaluated all of the accents in the rooms, you can see if you need stencils anywhere.

Hi ladies, I am a professional decorative artist, and may be I can help with damask stenciling. We do a lot of this finish for our customers, and really it is not that difficult, in fact for us the damasks are big moneymakers. The trick is to keep your contrast low, (so your mistakes don't show) and to keep your stenciling level. Use bubble level or laser level to keep it vertical. We always use foam rollers with rounded ends to roll the pattern, this way it's super fast. You can use brushes too if you have patience and lots of time! :) Damasks look best over a subtle mottled background, like sponging or colorwash. You still can do it over straight paint, but it may look less sophisticated. You should make a sample on a board before starting! Make sure you like your colors and your technique before hitting the wall. Thicker stencil will last longer. however broken stencil is easy to fix with pieces of clear packaging tape. You'll have to clean the stencil few times during the project because it does get pretty clogged with paint. Sometimes it is helpful to have 2 stencils so you don't have to clean them during the project. The easiest way to clean a stencil - place the stencil on a back of a baking tray( or other flat tray) in your sink and scrub it with a dishwashing brush under running water. this way it doesn't get entangled and bridges don't break. Make sure you have a mesh strainer in your drain to catch all those dried paint particles! if you aren't moving for ~ 5 yrs, i would absolutely do what you like!!! who knows what the market will be like in 5 yrs and who knows what will be 'in'... and, who knows if you will actually move. size the walls so the paper will come off quite easily should the new owners want to change the bathroom. it isn't something loud or crazy that would deter someone from buying the house or make someone 'cringe', imo! (and i can't imagine anyone offering less for a house because there is some wallpaper in the bathroom!) most people want to make a house 'their own' if they can afford it anyway and if they can't, i think it is neutral enough that many/most people would be able to live with it, especially in a guest bathroom!

Yardsale Bookcase - suggestions on wallpapering the back needed

Actually what jumped into my head when you showed the bookcase and mentioned the shutter headboard is beadboard-textured paintable wallpaper - waybackwhen, many cabinets, including freestanding ones, had a beadboard back. It's less busy than patterned wallpaper or fabric (remember, it'll get busier when you get books in there, unless you go the covering-with-identical-blank-paper route) but it has more interest than an ordinary painted surface. Remember to paint the shelves the same color so they're not visually intrusive. However, most wallpaper dealers (brick and mortar type) have bins with "orphan" rolls of paper at a VERY steep discount. If you can find the time you might cruise through some stores to see what strikes your fancy.

I have that wallpaper picked (in black) but because of removing wallpaper from our previous house I am tentative.

Stenciling is so much smarter. Where did you find the stencil? Was it hard? Did you have help? What are your recommendations?

And, to answer your question, it looks great!

If I do it I am going to use the current paint color in gloss mixed with a valspar metallic glaze.

I would rather stencil than wallpaper but I was tempted because I love the look.

Martia, it took us about 2.5 hours and the wall is a little over 10'. I used a flat paint as the base and the semi-gloss of the same paint over top. I had planned to use metallic and then saw pics of gloss over flat and changed my mind.

Faux68, I bought the stencil from stencil envy on etsy. There were two of us doing it and it helped to have a second set of hands for the edges. We started at the top which left just over an inch to fill in. If I do it again, I will plan it to have a more open part of the stencil on the edge at the top. The rest was fairly easy.

We were hoping to get a nice outcome but we were surprised that it wasn't too difficult and the spots we thought were not great, looked good when they dried. We overlapped one pattern top to bottom when moving and should have done one side to side too. It isn't perfect, but looks better than we had hoped.

Love it!!! I want to stencil my LR because it looks dead (few windows, not a lot of pattern, etc.). Wallpapering is gorgeous but a commitment. Stenciling can be so customized.

Yours is really beautiful. Would love to see the rest of the room!

We put the mirror in today and T is installing the blinds as I type. Getting closer. I will post final pics when it is done but here is the update with today's addition.

It makes more sense to me that it would take 2.5 days, not hours! You are so talented and I am so impressed. Looks stunning with that mirror. Looking forward to seeing more of the room.

I made a mistake on where I got the stencil. It was a store called Stencil Boss on Store Envy. I am adding a link. I also looked at Cutting Edge and they have another one I may buy called Lily Scroll but I wanted the one like the wallpaper and Stencil Boss was the only place I could find it.

Natesgram, I was amazed at how quickly it went. The only thing that took much time was finished the edges.
