I agree with the sofa on the mirror wall. Get art for over the sofa. Not sure if I read this already but place the chairs facing the safa. Is there enough rooms?
Yes to a larger rug. I would do roaman shades on those three windows. IMHO I think the spacing is too far apart to be treated as one treatment.

If you move the sofa and turn the rug (I agree, try to find a larger one), try putting a narrow sofa table behind it. That will give you options for decorating to provide a focal point-large vase with fresh flowers off center, a clock, a small stack of books, whatever. Then, you can try the chairs several different ways-opposite the couch, one on either side facing each other, both on one side...

I think that would be lovely and the pup would approve, too, I'm sure.

I agree, the mirror wall is bare and should be treated as a strong visual. Move sofa on mirror wall, two chairs on wall where sofa is now with small round table between - not square, since you need to soften the angles in the room.

What is the chest under the window/between chairs? I might get rid of it or move it to where chair is closes to camera. Get another chair with a small pattern or medium texture fabric to go between it and sofa.

What is the wall on the right (outlet)? Can you move chest there?

Changing the rug direction will help, but the rug is way too small for the room. I would get the biggest rug I could get for the seating area. It will make the space feel larger and bring everything together.

Can you add curtain panels to all the windows? I can't tell how much space is between them, but if you treated all three as one - run one long curtain rod over all three, hang panel on each end and two between windows that will cover the wall (between windows). Will soften the space and make it cozy.

You don't need new furniture at all! Just a few tweaks.

I would do built-in bookcases on that wall. As others have said, you need a much larger rug (8x12 or 9x12) to ground the space - maybe look at Dash & Albert for some options that you like? I found this rug that seems to match your furniture. I agree with others that you should move the furniture closer together. If it is an option, I would replace the ceiling fan with another light fixture or chandelier. I would also get matching curtain panels for the other windows and go all the way from the ceiling to the floor. I think the room has good bones and the furniture is fine, although I think a nice coffee table (I'm seeing one made from reclaimed wood to give it a more earthy vibe). I would also mix up the throw pillows on the chairs.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I get so overwhelmed when I think about this room and how to fix it.

One of the problems is that the couch, while comfy and a nice enough piece is way (and I mean way!) too big for the room. I let DH pick it out several years ago (Read: mistake in letting him get involved in decorating, much as I love him!). I had tried it on the far wall, a few years back, but I can try it again. I have smaller end tables now on either side, so perhaps this time it will fit better.

The rug is 5 x 7, and had been under the kitchen table, but I moved it to the LR when we had the floors re-done, to get an idea of what I want in there.

Here's the other thing. I am leaning towards a lighter colored wall, and brightening up the space, but the color of the couch makes that difficult I think. I love beachy blues and tans and light greens, but that's another story. :)

I have window treatments on the two ends of the walls.
You may be able to see the other one here. It's an older pic, right when we started to put the room back together after the floors were in. Laundry in place of the puppy that day! lol

I didn't want curtains on each window, since the room is small and would feel confined.

I wish I knew what artwork to buy or how to accessorize. I have no idea what type of rug would look good. Any ideas here? I guess I feel like I have some ok bones to work with, but no clue where to go from there. I go to TJMaxx and HomeGoods and Marshalls and scour the internet a ton, but I never find anything that seems to work. I tend to prefer traditional to transitional, but with an element of relaxed/comfy cozy. Is that even a style?? lol

The room is used for reading, spending time with friends when entertaining. We ditched the tv months ago (and our kids are actually thrilled to no longer have it!), and the basement is finished, so they have a place to play downstairs. We are in the mid-atlantic area of the country.

Oh, I can sadly relate to the woeful "this is fine, let's go now" DH shopper.

Seeing the second picture, I actually like how the sofa is in a little nook, and think it should stay where it is.

I like the sofa on the wall it is on too, but I would move the mirror and artwork to that wall as well. I love the credenza or sofa table idea for the back wall and by putting a vase or sculpture on top it will help that wall not look naked. I don't know how you feel about plants but if you put a large one behind the chair in the far corner you could bring the chair closer to the center for easier conversation. Then tilt the front chair more to the center of the room. Another idea to bring color or brightening to the sofa side would be to get another panel of the drapes and make pillow covers that way you bring some of the lighter colors to the sofa.
or sometimes the area rug can help pull it all together a larger rug would be nice (I don't know how to make a link )

I'm not great at this stuff but my initial reactions:

If you want to leave the couch where it is now:

I try to think of mirrors as art, and the subject is whatever's directly across from them. In this case, it's your fridge. So I would move the mirror, etc. to the wall where the couch is now. That will then reflect the light coming through the windows, hopefully make a more interesting subject, and most likely help brighten the room up a bit. I'd pull everything more toward the center of the room, and add a larger rug and a coffee table. I'd then add an armoire or something in the middle of the wall (where the mirror is now), and decorate it as the focal point.

If you want to try the couch on the wall where the mirror is now:

I'd still ditch the mirror reflecting the fridge, and do something like a print or non-reflective wall decor. :) I'd position the chairs where the couch is now.

Is that room deep enough to put the sofa parallel to the wall with the mirrors, but position in closer to the entry? You could use the table between the chairs as a sofa table. Then place the chairs where the mirror is now, angled slightly toward the center of the room. But not if that's going to cut the flow of traffic. I actually like sofas that "bisect" a room, when combined with a sofa table - I've done this twice in my house, but I have fairly large rooms so you can still access from either side of the couch.

I think the room is quite nice, it just needs minor finishing. I like the sofa where it is. I would finish the windows with panels for each window (to me it looks like you couldn't buy enough panels), and a sofa table or credenza with lamps so the mirror doesn't float over nothing. A live plant or two would be perfect.

The biggest problem with the room is that the couch and chairs look like they're afraid of each other. Pull them way, way closer together. You have multiple options for this--try a few. Then you can worry about the wall.

To see what it would feel like and look like before buying new stuff -

-put the ottoman in front of the couch to give the idea of a coffee table

-the table currently between the two chairs, put that under the mirror

-bring the two chairs closer together and put the small end table that is in the corner by the long wall between them.

Your rug should be bigger, but whatever, but I would definitely add a coffee table.

You are trying to expand the room by making the space between the chairs wider than it should be. The chairs should almost be across from the couch but the one at the front end looks like it is almost out of the room - put it back in.

Just suggestions. Play with stuff that you already have in the room or in the house for ideas of a room plan then buy stuff that fits. I think your couch and chairs are fine and good where they are.

Just because the room doesn't have a focal point, doesn't mean it doesn't need one.

Leave the sofa where it is. Move the mirror/art over the sofa, only hang it lower than it is now. When you hang the mirror, be sure to hang it with the wire connected below the mid point so it will reflect the windows, not the ceiling.

Slide the chairs in, away from the window to create a conversational cluster, grouped together with an area rug and a coffee table.

Then dress the far wall to create a focal point. For some reason, a secretary comes to mind...I worked at a major corp headquarters and outside the CEO's office was the most fabulous antique secretary and they kept the doors on it open, full of wonderful tchotchkes...I always lusted after that thing....

Perhaps the easiest way to dress the wall, and make the room feel less long and narrow is to make the far wall a deep accent color. Then anything you put in front of it or on it will stand out...or you can wall paper it.

You could do a very large piece of art or an art collection. Whatever it is, make sure you like it as it will be the focal point of the room.

I'm not a fan of your window treatments. Because you see them from the side as you enter the room, you need treatments that have a return so they looked finished from the end as well as from the front. I would treat each window separately as they are so far apart. Frankly, I think it looks odd with only 2 panels on 3 separate windows. Perhaps just add a valance to each window and no side panels if you want to keep the look lighter.

The sofa looks crowded as is. I would get rid of the end tables and replace with a sofa table behind it and put lighting on it. This way you'll have the light, it will help with the conversational cluster and it will give the sofa more breathing room in that nook and make the sofa more important in the room.

I think you need to look at pics and/or art to find an inspiration piece for the room and that will help you with the color scheme for the space.

Regarding the drapes/curtains, I still think you may be confusing "confined" with "finished." You have three separate windows and need to treat each of them; instead you are pretending they aren't there, and hanging a single panel on each end only maximizes their awkwardness.

If you don't like panels, try cotton sheers over the blinds or simple tiebacks, or a valance. Something. I think correcting the window treatments is the single most important thing you can change for this room to improve it.

I used a tranquil waters theme for illustrative purposes. Does your family have a favourite author or genre? You could choose art work appropriate as in pastorals, cityscapes, period themes, etc. (This drafting program hangs art higher than I prefer...but you get the idea...)

I moved the couch out from the wall, put the ottoman back in front of the couch, and grouped the chairs closer together as well, as were both suggested, and I have to say, I was surprised, but it already looks better.

I have a house full of company right now, so pics are not an option until after the long weekend, but I will work on it some more next week when I have quiet time again and will post some new pics and then see where to go from there.

I'm sorry I don't have time at the moment to address each person, but I read everything and took it all to heart (and made notes!), but I shouldn't neglect the company for too long. ;)

I will take the curtains down next week as well. Great idea. I never quite knew what to do with them and prefer a lighter look, so I think you are all right, that will help to achieve that look. I have looked a bit for a piece for the far wall and for a wall hanging as well. Back to that next week too!

I ended up having to have a procedure done, so I've been mia the last few weeks...

Today, I made some attempts. It's still not right though, and I know that.

Moved the furniture out from the walls. I feel like that helps quite a bit.

The plant is not big enough. Just pulled one from another room to get an idea. Will buy a new one for that corner I think.

The furniture piece would need to be stained a darker color, but I moved it in to see if something like it would work. What do you think?

I haven't moved the mirror yet or taken the curtains down, b/c my foot is still recovering and I can't risk climbing right now to do so.

I think crown moulding would help the room tremendously. But I'll need to save $$ for that one.

So I think it's getting a little bit better...but it's still not there I know. If I find a rug I like, I may splurge, but so far, I haven't come across one that I love.

It's looking cozier and more balanced already. You could move one of the couch end tables and put it (or another small one - maybe round) in between the two white chairs. And when money permits, or if you have another piece of furniture in the house that you can repurpose, put a longer piece under the mirror to help hide the plug and cords.

You said at the beginning that your room was small - maybe so but it doesn't have to act it. You're on your way to creating a nice, comfortable conversation area.

I am coming to this late, but i think it's a great improvement!! I have my own struggles with design but I'll share my first thoughts:

1. I would paint the cabinet-- i am feeling a dark burnt red!
2. I actually like the mirror and artwork where they are. I'd put a larger art piece above the sofa.
3. Yup, a bigger plant would be nice and add life to the room.

I have every plug in the house hidden just about, workers always ask where are the outlets!

You may have to look around a bit, a tall earthenware pot would work well too but with a basket you have more storage and the cords are easier to disguise.

I read all the posts quickly, I am surprised no one has questioned the ceiling fixture. I love a ceiling fan but I am wondering if there is one with a more elegant light fixture attached? Your white chairs in particular do not seem to go with it. The right chandelier could really set the mood I think.

That is fine, but I think it's too insubstantial for the floor. It doesn't look like a vase that should go on the floor. Something chunky- at least twice as wide, would look better.

It looks much, much better. Could you get drapes (Ikea?) that are on both sides of all your windows? Also, if you have it , a slightly wider console table/bookcase, perhaps with some books.

I liked the other lamp better. BUT, when you put a little table between the two chairs put the life guard lamp there. It will tie in with the white of the chairs and being by itself will make it's own cute statement.

Good idea with the vase in front of the plug but it needs to be a little more substantial. Putting something there helps with the weighting of that wall.

As for the ceiling fan, I think that will have to stay. We try to use the windows and fans for fresh air, rather than the a/c. There's no money in the budget right now to change that out. But thanks for the suggestion.

Curtains:

How would one hang drapes or curtains on this wall? The windows aren't that far apart from eachother. Individual rods? Or 3 separate? I don't think we'd ever close them if I did hang them.

One suggestion would be to have slightly longer rods with more contemporary finials. Take the panels part way - maybe onethird to halfway - into the two side windows. It would add some colour and texture to the window wall and help to soften all the lines of the window frames and blinds.. Right now it just looks like two squished up pieces of fabric languishing at either end of the wall.

The room looks really good.. Just throwing this out there, what if you spray paint your ceiling fan and use sheers at each window that would soften the room?? The sheers still let air into the room

i've been following this thread with interest because i'm in the 'conceptualizing' stage of furnishing my living room...

in my case, i will be starting from scratch....and like you when i see rooms 'done' i know what i like when i see it, but have no clue about how to put a "roomscape" together...

i think your room is coming together nicely yet i can see that 'missing element' that you just can't put your finger on...i think you have a defined 'look' in your vision, and just are having difficulty in putting all of the necessary elements...it sure can be frustrating

maybe mtnrdredux's idea of replicating a room she's seen in print (another thread i've been reading) is a good idea for people like us!

I think the false-rod drapes are contributing to the "unfinished" feeling because they are too obviously not operational and therefore look odd. I would put one long rod across all the windows and hang panels between the windows - no tiebacks.

Although the colors in the drapes co-ordinate well with the rug, maybe they are too matchy. I personally prefer white or ivory window coverings, they provide a nice soft filtered light and form a backdrop for the room and don't compete with the other colors.

The picture you posted of a room you like, I think that would be called traditional style, and very neutral. Maybe take a note from them if you'd like to bring that feeling in to your room - put up some ivory or off white ring top drape panels on one long rod. Ikea has some very nice ones for very low prices, we used their natural linen curtain panels in our office, they were tab tops (which I hate) but I cut off the tabs and used the alligator clip rings (also from ikea).

I think you're getting there but it just takes time.. You asked if I have spray painted a ceiling fan, no but I have spray painted everything else. I did a web search and found a lot of information here is one link from start to finish. But before doing so I would make sure the bearings and motor would be okay.. 1. What if you find a large subway canvas art at TJ Max to replace the mirror and 2 pictures
2. Make a family gallery behind your couch
3. Keep the mirror replace the prints with 2 subway canvas art
4. Like funkyart stated paint the cabinet
5. Paint the ceiling fan

I agree with Tinan about the window treatment. A smaller diameter iron rod would be my choice. Bring the rod up to the ceiling. You could do a grid of 6 identically framed prints over the sofa similar to the room you like posted above. Purchase frames at Hobby Lobby or Michaels on sale or with coupons. Frames could be spay painted whatever color you choose. An example, botanical fern prints. If you can't use the current window treatment elsewhere maybe the fabric could be made into pillows for the sofa. You have some nice pieces to work with. It just takes time and thought.

I too would keep the fan. I am suggesting you get a new light fixture for it, a more attractive one that makes a larger statement. I might be tempted to paint the rest the color of the ceiling to make it go away, visually. I love wood valances. I would put one long boxed valance across all the windows. If color is your need make up a fabric covered one. You could then hide any rod you want under it, get curtains that would stack at either end of the room. Then you could remove the mini blinds and at moments notice close the curtains if the light/privacy need is an issue. I see you have no casings..maybe that is a way to add architectural interest to your room? Your inspiration room has beautiful wood, casings, crown moldings as a back drop.

Everyone has offered great advice. I have to second painting the stand a deep red. Annie Sloan chalk paint has a really nice dark red and apparently it's easy to apply.

The only thing I'd do right now since it's easy enough, is to use patterned pillow covers, and not put matching pillows on all the seating. I'd stick with dark red though, it's a great accent color for your room.

I'm also partial to coffee tables instead of ottomans. They're so versatile, especially if you have kids.

I also like the idea of doing a grouping of family pictures over the sofa. Just have to figure out what/how, etc. What color are you suggesting to spray the fan if I decided to?

lizanne: Love your and tinan's ideas about the curtains. I like it going up to the ceiling as well, esp b/c we have high ceilings on this floor. I hadn't thought of putting 6 frames over the sofa either...I always think one big one or 3 next to eachother. 6 would fill that space nicely I think!

And I guess b/c we spent a good chunk on $$ on them, I am hesitant to get rid of them. Thanks for the valance idea. I like that idea as well. I'll have to do a few mock ups to see what I like irl.

Oakley: Do you think deep red would work, as the accessories are a rust orange? Agreed on the coffee table. Any suggestions for what type? Round/rectangle? That's where I'm stuck. The ottoman is only there b/c I haven't decided what would look best there.

This is, by far, the worst mock up you'll ever see. I had to use paint,and clearly am not adept at all! lol

I "painted" the cabinet a deep rusty orange, "hung" sheer-ish curtains, "made" pretend crown molding, "hung" a copy of subway art, and "added a round coffee table, while trying to patch the floor with "hardwood". lol I couldn't figure out how to put a new area rug down though...

I know, it's pretty laughable, given the talent here. It was the only way I could somewhat visualize some of the changes. If anyone with talent would prefer to fix my attempt, please feel free!

I think what you did looks nice, and I like the burnt orange color on the media cabinet. The drapes look much better, even though they are MS Paint versions. :)

The ceiling fan metal bothers me, but I'm not sure if it matches other hardware in your house? From this view, it doesn't match any metal in the room. So, I would spray paint the metal portions in ORB or black. You can also replace the glass parts easily (they are in the lighting section at HD/Lowes) and are relatively cheap.

You are right...there is not any other metal in the room right now. I worry about having too much black and was thinking of spraying a lamp or two in a mercury glass type of look, which may help the fan. I've looked a few times at the glass parts at Lowes, but didn't find any that were all that different than what's there now. I'll have to look again.

That looks great (using my imagination for the real thing)! You may not have room for 2 full panels between each window you could get away with one if they are full enough to fill the space - since you won't close them. I like all your proposed changes a lot!

I love how the red painted chest works in there and how the round table softens all the squares. The subway sign really brings in that vibe you wanted from the inspiration room... great progress with your plan!

I think I'd keep my eye out for at least one more "interesting" item to add to the eclectic vibe of the room. What could that be? Oh gosh-- anything! A rusty lantern, an antique toy or a vintage box for your magazines. If your kids are old enough, it could just be some interesting trinket to add to the coffee table. My friend has antique boot stretchers leaning against her wall.. another friend has a bowl of bocce balls. I have an old brass salamander sitting on a side table. I don't think you need to buy something -- I think you just a little unexpected surprise or two added over time to complete the look.

I think you have a great plan for the room! I can't wait to see it come to life!

Great mock up job, remember this is just my personal preference I too would spray paint the fan metal portions in ORB or black. I think once you hang the sheers the room will take a whole new look..

Thanks funkyart! My kids are old enough (and have the run of the basement as their playroom) that this room can have an interesting piece or two in in without worrying about them. The dog, on the other hand...I think he will act like a puppy even when he is 12! lol

Hopefully, it will start to move forward soon. October's a busy month for us, so we'll see...
