Electrical Socket Placement, Hiding Sockets & General Advice
Comments (31)cfmuehling - Thanks for the nice words. I too am rebuilding after a fire - but only the kitchen was damaged. Sounds like you are rebuilding much more? I am so sorry! Anyway I didn't even need to pull permits for my fire damage, but took the opportunity to do some major work to the kitchen layout. The house is otherwise livable, so it's not as if I need a CO from the City. I will not be fined, but if the inspector doesn't give the green light he simply makes a note of it in the city's record. My contractor says that given the size of the sink and my safety reasoning, he thinks that there is a possibility that the inspector will say OK and I will pass the inspection. I am very sensitive to safety issues after having the fire. The fact is, the kitchen is upscale and attractive, the house's location is an A+ in my city, so the placement of an outlet so close to the sink, while may be the "code," is irrationally unsafe and shouldn't affect resale. I don't have a problem with a prospective buyer knowing this when I resell the house. Heck, if they need an outlet placed into the soapstone counter inches from the sink, in order to get a mortgage, or for personal reasons, I'll be happy to pay for it at that time. :) Dimmers are great, I agree!...See MoreRepairing a dangling light socket.
Comments (6)Often pull chain switches just need lubricating. Turn OFF the power to that assembly that includes the switch. Spray just one shot of WD-40 directly into the switch where the chain enters. Pull the chain about 4 times to see if it operates smoothly. If not, spray again. See if it operates smoothly. Wait two hours or more and turn ON the power. Often the switch will work better than when new....See Moremis-placement of meter socket on a custom built home.
Comments (11)Well , I talked the Electrician down to $600 bucks to move it under the stairs of our walk out basement. -and- I had to give up our $600 dollar generator install option and $450 dollar pre hot tub 220v intall. Sounds like this is still costing you OVER $1000.00 ! My first question as to who is to blame- - Did YOU sign off on these plans "pre-construction"? When I built, I went over every single sheet of the plans, (finding several "mistakes" and omissions), and having the architect/builder correct them and I signed off on each revision and sheet of plans prior to the first shovel of dirt being turned. If it is shown on the plans in that location, and you signed off on it, it is your "nickel" to move it. If it is shown in another location, and the GC/Electrician put it there for "convenience" then it is their "nickel" to move it. You may want to talk to the local Chief Electrical Inspector or the Chief Building Inspector before all the final hookups are made-something does not sound right about having the meter socket at the front entrance, not only aesthetically, but for safety reasons, blocking/delaying egress from the structure in an emergency, if the panel should catch fire!...See Morewiring outdoor light to protected outdoor socket
Comments (3)I was afraid of that. That presents difficulties since I would have to have someone (a professional...not my area of expertise, real or imagined) wire it to the outlet in the garden, but in such a way as to be able to (a) turn the light on and off with a switch near the house, and yet (b) still allow me to independently turn off the fountain (plugged into one of the switchable sockets in the garden outlet) from a different switch near the house. I guess something like that must be possible. But it certainly takes the "Y" out of my "DIY." One question I have: I have two fountains...both with UL approval etc...and they both have plugs. Both are thus presumed to be able to be plugged into a weatherproof socket in the garden. So, is it the case that the rules/policies for permanent lights is different than the rules/policies for permanent fountains? Or do we somehow pretend that the fountain isn't 'permanent'? Thanks! Chuck...See Moremahatmacat1
