Help with wall switch to control fan speed in bedroom

We just had an electrician come in and install new wall switches and wire our bedrooms for overhead lighting. I told him we wanted fans in the bedrooms, so he installed two different switches (one for the light, one for fan control), with an extra set of wires that run to the overhead fixture. I want to install fans, but I don't know what type of switches I need. I've seen sliders from Leviton that look like dimmer switches, but they come in both 1.5 and 5 amp versions. Which one do I need? Do all fans work with separate controls for the light and fan speed? Should I worry about the amps? I've heard if you use the wrong type of control, it can kill the fan or be dangerous.
