How much to add a 240 line to my kitchen?

I'm moving into a coop in brooklyn, so I may be restricted as to what I'm allowed to do. But, assuming I'm allowed to, how much should I expect to pay to install a 240 line in my kitchen? There currently aren't any there, and the building is an apartment building. I'm not electrician, all I know is I have a crappy old circuit box with 4 screw in breakers, and it's in my kitchen! I don't have access to anything but that, so no running new wires from the street or something.

Are there two boxes with handles above the screw in fuses about the size of a deck of cards? If so, then one is for a range which is 240.

Your kitchen is beautiful. It just needs a little fun added to it. The valance that starts from the ceiling with the stage coach ties would be a good choice. I think that picture is a great example of how you can bring colors into the room from the fabric. Also, I would suggest using the same valance in the dining area. The picture with the shorter valance looks too choppy. I would look for a print fabric that had some of the colors of the granite in it. I really like the iron art over the stove although I would prefer to see a tile BS, if funds allow it. The dining table needs a large colored art bowl. I agree with Igloo, the colbat just doesn't make it and you need to pull in the golds and rusts. Colbalt blue actually sticks out like a sore thumb but it may work if you have art or fabric with a little colbalt blue in it along with rusts and golds. I would not use any rug in an eating area unless you were using a glass table. The patio doors look fine without any treatment but a valance would add some warmth to the room and still give you full view (use one that starts from the ceiling) Don't worry about tying in the white appliances. I would just ignore them since the wood trim is painted white (that's enough white). Once you get the window treatments squared away, I would like to see some colored accessories in the glass cabs instead of plain white. JMHO

There is a web site at www.poolforum.com/pf2/index.php that has forums specific to each area of water care. You will need to have some basic info available before the group can help. What is the PH and chlorine (you listed those), what is the CYA level (stabilizer), Alk, and Cal. It sounds like a gunite pool (from size). Do you have a SWG? Basically your Ph is pretty good (7.4 to 7.6 is perfect) but your chlorine is low. Chlorine level depends on the level of CYA. CYA stablizes chlorine so it is not quickly broken down by sunlight. Chlorine levels of 3 to 5ppm are common. The level of Alk is what contols how fast/easy the PH changes. it should be around 80 to 120ppm. You can use regular unscented bleach. Pour it around the edge of the pool. Don't add it to the skimmer as strong bleach can harm the plastic in the skimmer. Finally, in a 33000 gal pool, 26oz of Borax will raise Ph 0.2.

I need the shed for the room. I want it under the carport so that it would be protected from the sun and be convenient to be moved away (i.e., I intend to buy another house in the future, and would simply use this shed as the regular shed that would be in the yard.) The only reason I need the extra value is that I need to put it on my bankruptcy form. I will just presume that it adds no extra value, and just let the bankruptcy trustee come up with a value. (I'm still probably going to be well below any threshold to have any home equity over the homestead exemption.) It is not a needless complication since I will doing a bankruptcy, and the money that I would be devoting to the shed would simply go into the bankruptcy estate instead. By buying the shed, it becomes part of my homestead, and therefore I get to keep it. Yes, I know, I'm a horrible cad that will be doing what every corporation had done in a similar circumstance. I am in the perfect situation to take advantage of the bankruptcy laws, just like Donald Trump was in the early 90's, so I am going to go for it. As for the aerospace jobs in Huntsville, even if I wanted to, I could not move there since I was given a disaster grant from the state of Louisiana that compels me to remain in Louisiana. And besides, I have heard stories of rocket engineers there who have been reduced to driving the courtesy van for a car dealership, and and other horror stories. And the government is fixing to cut NASA to the bone because the Republicans and their tea partiers suddenly have found Jesus in deficit control (where were they during W's time?), and since the Democrats are scared to raise taxes, all non-essential government activity will be cut. There will be major layoffs in the business. I guess that my next question is how much to move a shed. It can't be that much since I was earlier looking at moving an 800 ft^2 house (!) and it was only going to be a few thousand $.

My agent spoke with the listing agent and sent me the following message: "This home was slated for foreclosure when a deed in lieu was issued to the current owner. According to the agent, he is taking a loss on the home with the deed in lieu process, thus the reason for no price reductions coupled with him not desperate to sell. Ã¯Â¿Â½ Ã¯Â¿Â½They just recently put in a yard, as he felt some of the people who have looked at the home, could not envision what a yard would look like, as I guess it was all a bunch of scrub brush and not a completed yard, so they did one. Today they areÃ¯Â¿Â½going through the basement for itsÃ¯Â¿Â½final phases of sheet rocking, texture, and painting, asÃ¯Â¿Â½approx. 1000+ sq/ft of basement was NOT complete. They are completing it now, and will finish withÃ¯Â¿Â½texture, paint, trim work and carpeting. There is also a bathroom plumbed, and conversions can be done, however one may see fit, Even a Mother in Law apt." When I look on the county website they list no sales for this property (going back to 1997) The property is owned by a financial group- llc type thing. I will ask my agent more about it tomorrow, as I am still confused as to who was building the home and who owns it now. As far as finishing the basement, my guess is the owner has multiple business ventures that involve construction to some extent. So perhaps it is easier/cheaper for him to finish the basement and sell it as a 4,000 sq ft home vs just 3,000. I think the home may have been rented out. Agent comments on another website mentioned that this home had been well maintained. It was built in 2009 and most of the listing photos were taken when the house was just about complete. A little confusing, but overall much more straightforward than the last house we were looking at, lol.

From your description, I'd guess that your current service may not have enough capacity to handle large electrical appliance such as an electric range. You should have the situation evaluated by a repuatble local electrician. He or she can give you an estimate of the cost.

I HIGHLY doubt you are allowed to do ANYTHING in this building. Especially considering it is an apartment building, co-op or not.

Assuming I'm allowed to, approximately, what would the cost run me? Or is it too highly dependant to give a rough estimate?

I for one will NOT assume this. You are in the city, and this is an apartment. I know for 99.5% certainty you are NOT allowed.

Besides, what are you asking??? You want to assume you can do this yourself, yet you want to know how much it will cost to have done???

Sounds like there is some confusion here.

If I'm seeing this correctly (and I may not be), there are two separate issues.

1. In most areas, a homeowner is allowed to perform electrical work on his or her own owner occupied home after obtaining a permit. In an apartment, co-op, or condo, the situation is going to be different.

2. If you're renting, it's up to the building owner to take care of these matters.

As a property owner I can tell you that if you were renting from me, the quickest way to lose your deposit would be to violate my lease clause requiring that all maintenance work be handled by my employees or contractors. I have too many tenants who paint their units some weird color over my objection. These people pay for repainting when they move. Another example : one of my tenants drilled a hole through from the kitchen to the garage and connected his 240 volt air compressor to the range receptacle (unsafe). I had an electrician fix the wiring and deducted the cost from his deposit.

I HAVE had some tenants who wanted to make changes that I didn't object to, but didn't want to pay for. The one who couldn't bring herself to use a toilet that someone else had used was quite welcome to have a new one installed at her own expense, as long as she used the plumber I knew and trusted.

I guess the point is that, if you're renting, I don't think you can install the service yourself, and you probably shouldn't unilaterally arrange to have it installed by a pro. You should go through your landowner to have the work done. However, the landowner may be entirely within his or her right to refuse to pay for it. Your only real recourse in that situation is probably to offer to pay for the installation yourself, or move.
