Repairing Stained Wood Window Sill

fandlil

The bay window in our kitchen is stained wood, sort of a medium tone oak stain (I think) that blends nicely with the cabinets, baseboards, and doors. The veneer on the window sill got damaged when the previous owner caused water that she used for her plants to soak into it. The sill is approximately 11 inches by 42 inches, and tapered at the ends to fit the bay window shape.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to restore the sill. Is it a job for a DIY? My skill level is low and I don't have many tools. Is it possible to acquire a fresh piece of veneer cut to the right size and, if so, how should I go about removing the old veneer and installing the new one? Of should I hire a carpenter? If I hire someone, what kinds of questions should I ask to assure myself that he will do a good job?
