I used to like RH. But I don't need to go in there any more. I like their lighting and towels. I'm trying to be positive. But its hard! I just liked the store better before.

It does look just like dough. And like amj I'm imagining all the crumbs that would fall in there and be impossible to get out.

I personally rather like it, dimples and all; quirky, I'll admit but it got my attention in a good way. No eating allowed on it , of course, lol, those tufted ridges would need to be vacuumed on the horizonal planes of the sofa, not so much on the vertical sides. Not a practical sofa, for sure, but visually I love it for it's originality.

I really don't think it's going to fly out the door though as far as sales go, not mainstream or classic enough. I have a deeply tufted leather sofa but the seat cushions are flat.

It looks like it was sewn together from muffin tops. And I'm not talking about a baked good.

I'm not a fan, but there's only a few of their furniture pieces I do like.

Can you imagine sticking the vacuum wand into each of those dimples to clean them out? - it would take an hour. I don;t even open my RH catalogue anymore, I just don't like the stuff that they're selling.

AuntJen, I'm with you on the cat hair. One of my absolute requirements on redecorating was NO TUFTS. (I still dream about trying to unwind all the cat hair from the tufts of my old dining chairs... AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!)

I also used to like Restoration Hardware when it was more like a cross between Pottery Barn & Crate & Barrel. I just don't get this new look they have. Expensive, enormous, impractical... and sorry, but my world is not sepia.

I like the room sized (at least in my house) lounger a lot, but the chandeliers in the bird cages are a tad creepy and Addams Familyesque for me.

I actually like the tufting. I don't like the sofa or whatever that is. But I could see a sort of chair-and-a-half, with those high arms. I could curl up in the softness of all that tufting and hide from the world.

I'll admit that I currently have a tufted chaise lounge. And a cat. It's not the best combination in the world. But's it's comfy!

RH has definitely gone a different direction. I like some of their new items, but others just make me wondering what they were thinking. I can't believe the size of their "catalog" errr "Fall 2011 Publication" (616 pages!!). Personally, neither that sofa nor the chandeliers in bird cages does it for me. I think both look a little ridiculous. I would never want them in my home. I do, however, like that little side table.

That sofa looks like my tummy in one of those mirrored funhouses at the state fair. Everywhere you look....tummy!

But what the photo leaves me wondering about is what the chandeliers did to deserve being locked up. Naughty chandies, tsk tsk.

I had to go back to see the Sphinx! Good eye, chickadee2! I used to love going in the store and always found things that I liked. Now I find the store depressing, I walk around quickly and leave. Did they used to have a much larger selection of drapes? The display and choices seemed very small.

It does look like a lounge in a bordello (not that I'd know)...kind of naughty....I kind of like it in that context, but not in my living room.

Yikes!! And to think they once had really nice stuff. I still love their lighting and bathroom fixtures but can't really say any of their furniture does anything for me anymore.

I went into our local RH a few weeks ago, but quickly left to go to Pottery Barn. I used to prefer RH with their better quality and classic look, but NOT any more.

I have come to detest a lot of their stuff, the store is depressing, almost all of their merchandise has to be ordered with outrageous shipping charges on top of the outrageous prices.

I find it impossible to believe that this is actually a more profitable business model. My local store never seems to have paying customers in it. :)

Eeegads that looks like it is taking over the room. UGLY! I love tufted sofas, but that is just a nightmare. I recently went RH while visiting my sister in Portland, and with a few exceptions like only their old stuff. Their new line of furnishings is too drab and too contrived. I did see the most adorable set of salt and pepper shakers in Jadite (AuntJen are you listening?).

I also love tufting on the right piece of furniture. I especially love tufting on a headboard.

This monstrosity, however, reminds me more of huge dimples than tufting. There is something extremely weird about the tufting as well as the scale and form of the piece.

I agree, recently drove a long way just to see what beautiful things they might have to help me with a project. I can't even remember what was in there. It was dark and everything mostly behind glass or two inconveniently displayed to look at. Was very disappointed and kinda left scratching my head like what just happened??? They'll be the next one filing chapter 7. Hopefully they get it together before then...

I've never actually been in a RH store, so I can't speak to the quality of their furniture. And I know I may be the only one on this thread, but I do like that lounger, it would fit me, mr. sandyponder, the kid and the canines and I see it as the perfect place to while away a stormy winter afternoon listening to Tanglefoot or John Hiatt and reading our respective books-of-the-moment. However, I am absolutely, positively sure that it's way out of our price range, so we'll stick to the CL sofas that we already own and that are already nicely dog haired.

Over on Apartment Therapy, which is a decorating blog aimed at a somewhat different demographic that THS, they did a full-of-hype post that really tried to promote the catalog.

However, the comments left by readers tended to echo what's been said here about the catalog as a whole and the store.

So who exactly is RH trying to market to?

I agree with someone up above that the sofa is ugly but the light fixtures is what caught my eye, I have been making light fixtures and the idea of putting it inside of a bird cage is beautiful.

I like the whole look of the room. Though I haven't been in a RH in years. Probably because I found it boring and overpriced at the time.

I do think the perspective of the photograph throws the scale off. The biggest birdcage available is 30"x50" and the sofa portion comes in a pretty basic 84"x45".

Granted they are using the Goliath size for the ad. Which I think is eye popping visual merchandising.
