Another plea for paint color help! Pics!

I really thought we had settled on painting our soon-to-be finished basement family room a gold color thanks to some great guidance from some folks on here. We got thrown a curveball yesterday, though, when some wonderful friends GAVE us 2/3 of a slab of granite left over from their bathroom counters to use for our kitchenette/snack bar counter!! It is kind of a unique granite, Waterfall green is the name, I think. We plan to use Ikea cabinets with the Adel Medium Brown doors, but now I am not so sure if gold will go well with this granite. Carpets will be SmartStrand in a brownish color

Here is a picture of the granite in their bathroom. I can't get a pic of the actual leftover slab just yet as it is being stored off site from their home right now. Can anyone make some suggestions, preferably in relation to Benjamin Moore paints, of colors that might go well with this granite?:

While we are at it, does anyone want to weigh in on what the heck we should do with this fireplace? We tore off the ugly raised hearth and plan to tile a new one. We were really hoping to reface it with stacked stone, but I just don't think it's in the budget right now. If we simply paint it, what color should it be? The same as the trim, which will be Acadia White?

No, I think you'd better pass on the gold with the new granite. Great deal though! Free is always welcome around here.

I haven't used BenMoore paints but I know many have, and in the greens. Red and TTodd, to name a few. Hopefully, they'll check your post and give you some suggestions.

I think that one color may be Dry (Dried?) Sage.

Just for starters: what color is your friend's kitchen painted? Or what do they plan to paint? Do you like it? I would try to pick up the sagey green in the granite for a wall color.

For the fireplace (I assume you mean the whole brick area), it depends on whether you want the brick wall to stand out from the wall color or not. What will be your wall color? Bold and dark, or not?

Hello stompoutbermuda, This is really quite a coincidence as I rarely visit the landscaping forum, but just happened upon it a couple of days ago. From what I can see of the mountain range in your pics, and I could be wrong, but it appears as though we are practically neighbors. :-) If so, I live in the neighboring town maybe 7 or so miles east of your location. I agree with the poster who said you've got a 'diamond in the rough' there. I'm in my 50's and have lived in this area for nearly 40 years, and have seen many a beautiful desert oasis built in the area where it appears you are. :-) Not being a fan of snakes either, lol, I feel safe to say that in the many years I've spent in the high desert, and many hikes out in the desert, I have seen rattlesnakes as many times, or less, than I can count on one hand. They are shy creatures, not aggressive, and while dangerous, they are an important part of the desert community. We would be overrun with rodents otherwise. And I also agree with the poster who said king snakes, roadrunners and hawks are natural predators who help to keep the rattlers at bay. I'm afraid it's a waste of money, effort and time to try to create a snake proof fence. Your best bet is to accept that they are a part of the community - walk with loud but cautionary steps around hiding areas where they may be, and carry a long stick with you if you need to poke around in an area which may be a hiding place for them. If I may offer a few suggestions, for what they are worth...? :-) Line your fence line with oleanders and cypress. Both are drought and wind resistant, are green all year round, and the oleanders offer beautiful and colorful blooms this time of year. Yes, oleanders are poisonous, but one would have to actually consume many leaves, or breathe the fumes of burning plants to be in danger. Many, many homeowners in this area have oleanders on their fence line for a windbreak, and I have yet to hear of anyone becoming sick as a result of them. I've raised two children here in the high desert and now have several grandchildren enjoying the slow pace and beautiful sunsets over the Sierras. :-) As far as gardening, there is no reason why you can't realize your dream of having a productive garden. I say this as I just went outside and picked several ripe and juicy tomatoes from my plants. I visit gardenweb often and lurk, but I believe this is my first post as it pertains to something I actually know a little something about. LOL. But flourescents? Really? You bet. I love 'em, both for the intensity without excessive heat or electricity use, and for the smoothness of the light. At least for the linear type, the large radiating surface minimizes shadows, like working outside under a clear blue sky with indirect sunlight. Funny, when I was much younger, I hated fluorescents. I ripped them out of one house I owned. But three things happened. I got older and my eyes got weaker. Electricity got more expensive. Fluorescents got much, much better. A lot of people still think that fluorescents are those ghastly greenish-grey humming, flickering "cool white" tubes in offices. No more. I'll have to admit you can still get the ugly type if you're a cheapskate. The buck-or-two lamps are the low-CRI cool white or pinkish warm white. But for fixtures and lamps of any quality, the light is dramatically better. Tri-phosphor T8 lamps have a range of color temperatures from warm to bluish daylight, and very good color rendering index (but don't let them sell you lamps with a 7xx number - those are lower CRI). Fluorescents come in more shapes and types (notably compact fluorescents). This makes them easier to fit into more spaces. Finally, there are even a few decent looking fixtures if you look around. In my area the big locally owned electrical supply carries some fairly nice ones. I've seen a few online, too.

I like your house the way it is. I do feel the large shrubs on the right side look squatty and the squared off ones by the step don't look natural. I really like the yuccas or whatever they are on the left side under the tree. They add texture. I would add something else to the other side, hosta or small rhodo and evergreen planting. Add larger lights by the door and move the too small flowers. Maybe flower boxes below the two upper end windows could reflect a front door color. Betty

My favorite trick with a brick fireplace like that is to paint it the same color as the wall, but one sheen level shinier. That way the fireplace doesn't scream for attention, but still has some presence texturally.

parma42 - yup, free is definitely welcome here too! They actually had a whole slab of Jurassic Green left over from their kitchen that they would have given us for $600. If only we hadn't JUST done our kitchen counters. DOH! I don't think it would have been quite enough to do ours, anyway.

andee - I don't know what color they are painting the bathroom. I'll have to ask them. The fireplace is in the same room that the granite will occupy so that's the wall color I'm looking for. I don't really like the fireplace, so I don't really want it to stand out, but I don't want it to feel like I am trying to hide it either IYKWIM. One thing I forgot to mention is that the Love Sac beanbags we have to furnish this room are covered in brick red, olive green and navy blue. I can't really afford to recover them all right now, so it would be helpful to coordinate with them. I keep looking at the greyish greens in the fan deck and I wonder if something like that might work.

Thanks parma42 and msrose. *I* really like both of those colors, but dh is worried we have too much green in our houase already (insert eyeroll here). Our bathroom is Silver Sage, the Kitchen will be BM Prescott Green and DD's bedroom is a Martha Stewart Valspar color that I can't recall.

The color he picked out of the fan deck last night was BM Audobon Russet. I thought I had gotten him away from the reds, argh!!

Take a whole bunch of paint chips - every color you can get your hands on - and start laying them on the granite. See the link for instructions

That's one sure way to find colors that look great with it, and you might find that the gold you had in mint looks OK, crappy or great.
