where to begin?

to begin: at the moment my question revolves around my electric oven. when i connect it, all hell breaks loose, that is my sink gets electrified, the metal gas line behind it gives shocks.

i pulled out the plug from the oven to the wall outlet, the oven by the way functions perfectly. the oven itself has 3 wires. brown, blue and yellow (ground). I turn on my multimeter to continuity check, which always reads "1" at start. i checked for continuity with my multimeter and i get a readout of 1900 or something like that between the brown and blue. I mean, shouldn't this be absolutely "1", no connection at all?

and, in all the house circuitry, when i do a continuity check between the positive and negative (is this correct terminology?) holes in the outlets, i get continuity. that is, a connection. As well as continuity between the ground and any other wire. my fuses do not blow or anything. Is any of this normal?

Doing continuity tests on live circuits is not going to be healthy for a lot of meters.

Something is seriously wrong with this circuit (and in addition, unless you have plastic plumbing, I suspect something is seriously wrong with the house bonding). Further, I don't know what meter you are using but I assume "1" is how it indicates an open circuit (most show dashes or OL in that case).

The first place to look (turn OFF the power first), is the wiring of the oven jack. My off hand guess is that one of the hot wires touching the ground AND for some reason the grounding system is not working properly as the breaker doesn't blow.

The fact that the plumbing is electrified is a serious problem indicating serious defects in the wiring. I'd call an electrician and shutoff the breaker to this circuit (even that is not safe enough probably).

You are not in North america. Most of the info and users here are in NA.
It sounds like your stove has a short to ground and is electricfying all grounded items in you house. In order for this to happen and not trip the breaker your water and gas line must not be bonded to your panel correctly. This may be beyond a regular DIY solution.

Also an ohm meter should read infinte or open when not connected to anything, not 1.

Wow lots of interesting stuff here! I think there are multiple issues here, and, since the health of the plants isn't great, I would deal with all possible problems rather than hunt down one specific one. If it were me I would do the following, since doing them would fix any of the most likely problems that you may be having. I would change the mix to a free draining one. I would check the roots, and pot into a container that is only a little larger than the rootball. I would put them in a partially sunny position after the repot until they get used to their new mix and pot. I would then move to a sunny location once things started to settle. I would make sure the room had plenty of humidity with gravel trays or a humidity. I would make sure the room was warm, and provide bottom heat to the pots if possible. I would inspect for bugs. Mites and scale seem the most prolific - possibly mites in your case. Webbing is a telltale sign, and sometimes hard to spot, but not always present. I would treat with Toni's spray regardless (she can tell you the ingredients, or you can search previous posts.) If you do spot bugs, use Toni's spray or a suitable one for fruiting plants from a garden centre. I would water these (after the repot) only when the new medium was closer to dry than damp. In a new medium you won't have to worry so much over watering - if it is the right medium it is unlikely you will overwater unless you go nuts with it. Fertilize only very lightly until the tree is back to health, then feed with a high nitrogen feed every couple of weeks. Citrus bounce back, but they take time. These are not by any means the be all and end all of things you should do, they are merely what I personally would do :) Danny

John: The same thing happened to my ford ranger (1989) after it had sat in a lot for six months. I am a mechanic and I checked the entire system for damage. Everything looks intact but often it isn't. Test your alternator-mine was putting out 19V, it should only push 12. Also check your battery-they do go bad and the result is varying electrical output, which can wreak havoc on your vehicle's sensors, solenoids, fuses, etc. One last thing that you should do is make sure that your system is properly grounded. Check continuity from the neg(-) battery terminal to all your frame, block and body. If your ground has been disturbed (it happens) you will see varying continuity or complete resistance in the circuit.

Year after year, GE is pretty much up there with the most reliable ranges produced in Consumer Reports surveys. It's a good thing, because their parts are more expensive than a lot of other brands. I especially like their double oven range that has the smaller oven on top, similar to the Maytag Gemini, but the smaller oven is larger and will fit a LOT more in it than the Gemini. Electric ranges are for the most part depressingly similar in construction and in basic parts used. There really isn't any way of saying one is superior to another because they all cook pretty much the same. Some have adjustible eyes (handy) or warming zones, or convection bake ovens, but most of your "regular" electric ranges will be clones in functionality except for minor design clues. All of which will give you an idea of why I like the Profile double oven range so much. It's innovative and flexible, and it's sleek looking too. And it's not that expensive when you consider that you're actually getting two functional ovens and 5 eyes. Spend the extra money for the convection version and it comes with a "griddle link" eye that will let you use a rectangular griddle on the two left eyes without any cool spots in the middle.

Your heat pump may have failed and the system is operating using only the backup strip heat. That is an HVAC problem and needs an HVAC contractor.

i checked the oven outlet and it looked ok. the oven itself appears to have problems. is this so?

but beyond that, there is continuity all over the place.

what does "bonded to your panel" mean?

Sounds like an open neutral to me with a 3-wire bonded oven. Then again, he is in Spain so I have no idea if this is even relevant.

I think your meter is reading (1) when not connected to anything because you damaged it while doing a continuity check on a live circuit.

Does this happen with anything else you plug in, or just the oven?

As for your meter, the live wire goes into the appliance, through a bunch of stuff (coils, clocks, lights etc) and the returns via the neutral. If there is anything inside the appliance that is always on (a light, clock etc) there will be an open electrical path that you can detect and it will have some fixed resistance.

The bigger concern is what is happening behind the scenes. With alternating current, there is no "positive" and "negative". You have a live that switches between positive and negative and a neutral that is getting pushed and pulled by the live. The live is coming to your house from a power grid. The neutral is connected to a huge source of electrons, the earth, at your home. If your pipes and sink are becoming charged, that means that the live is pushing and pulling electrons there instead of from the earth as intended. This is a dangerous situation because electricity chooses the path of least resistance to get to ground. Metal pipes and wires usually provide that path. If they aren't doing it, you may accidentally end up providing that path with your body and could receive a severe shock.

Since this is a potentially dangerous situation, I would suggest you get an electrician over immediately.
