I need advice on how to repair scratches...(Pics)

I have been reading some of the posts on how to repair wood and could use some help. I know that refinishing the whole door is probably the best solution but since there is a chance that scratching may occur again, I decided that refinishing should be done annually versus monthly. (Trying to keep my humor. Door was installed last month.)

Anyway, can I just take a Q-tip and touch up the scratches with stain and then the finish coat?

Yes, you can use a Q-tip with some stain, then apply a top coat, but I don't know how good it will look. My gut says if you are not sure if you can do this, then you probably don't have the finishing skills to do it well.

I would suggest practicing on a scrap piece of wood. Stain it, finish it, then scratch it similarly. If you can repair these scratches to your satisfaction, then go ahead. But rather than a Q-tip, use an artist's brush. You might also consider the wax sticks they sell for repairs. Blend the wax to get a color match.

I can't see scratches but I'll take your word for it.
Often the problem with factory applied finishes is that they are colored and the color of the wood is in the finish and when the finish gets scratched you can really see it.
I would try to find a stain the color of the door and using an artists' brush ( Q-tips are hard to control) try to color just the scratches.
At some time you probably will have to refinish the whole door...

This is my clipping from sherrilynn: about any stainless steel sink. I recently had a huge compliment from my brother, a builder of high end homes. He was very impressed at how good my sink always looks. He is not a fan at ALL with SS. He prefers porcelain, which chips. I asked him why he was so impressed with my sink and hates SS? It was because he has had to replace multiple high end sinks before closing because a workman or someone would have used a new homeowners SS sink and caused a 'scratch' in the bottom of the sink. The new homeowners would insist on a brand new sink before they would close.We all know that we can tolerate the damage that we do to our stuff, but not anyone else! When you spend well over a $1,000 to $1,800 for a sink, of COURSE you want it to be unblemished! Well, I told him my 'secret' to keeping my 12" deep single basin Franke sink looking good. I've used this 'method' on ALL of my sinks and I just love it! My sink glows because of the 'patina' that it now has...and yours can, too. The finish looks better each time you use my method, too. I use my sink! I also have a large family that I cook for and use some commercial size, heavy pans. Guests sometimes want to help in the kitchen, or teens, and they bang up the bottom, scratching the sink, and it will look just awful when they're done. They always apologize because they think they've ruined my sink. Never fear. I can 'fix' it in as little as 3 minutes from start to finish. I've now trained my teens on how to help me maintain a good looking sink. AND if they scratch it, they restore it! It's that simple. Here's what I do. About every other day, I use Bar Keepers Friend and one of the green scrubby pads that you can buy just about anywhere. It will keep average use to your sink 'maintained' between 'restoration' cleanings. When there are scuffs and deeper scratches in the sink, I use sandpaper to wet-sand the metal in different grades of paper to restore the sinks. I prefer the black 'wet or dry' sandpaper by Norton that you buy at HD. I already have about 3" squares in multiple grades already cut out and in a baggy under my sink, so I'm ready when I need to 'do this'. I start with about 150 grit working on the problem areas when I get to them, then work up to at least a 400 grit. I use small circular pattern and overlap all of my work. I never just 'rub' a scuff or scratch in a straight pattern; I always blend my work. I start in the furthest back left corner and work across the back of the sink moving left to right, just as you would work if you were writing on lined paper. I do the entire sink bottom, then move to the sides. I start with 150 grit paper, then change to 220, then 320, then 400. I rinse the sink after each grit paper is used. Sometimes I use a little soap or BKF depending on my needs so I can move faster with the paper. Once you try it, you will understand what I mean. I finish off with a good soapy rinse with a rag, then apply a 'finish' of Franke Inox cleaner or a wiping coat of vegetable oil. I have even used Rain-X to help repel spots. I'm just out of it right now and have been using up products I have under the sink. I use 'whatever' to just help the sink repel water right down the drain a.s.a.p.. My brother now had one of his guys using my method on their Franke sinks before final walk thru before closing on a new home. Guess what? They're not having to replace sinks anymore. After you clean your sink a few times, your sink will start to gain a beautiful patina and smoothness to the finish and you will start to love stainless steel. I also use this method on my $10,000 Thermador Range top. It glows. I just love it. I've been saving this for when I need it.

It's a pull-up leather, so what you do is take your favorite hand lotion and start massaging it into those scratches. Take your time and work it in. May take four or five applications. Aniline-dyed leathers fade in direct sunlight. You can get an aniline dye kit and some pull up wax and cream and do a pretty good job restoring it. Is the wood smooth or rough? In the photo, it looks rough, like it is wire brushed. If that is the case, sanding will make it look worse. Glue that splinter back down--a bit of wood glue on an artist's brush & then painter's tape wrapped around the door edge as a clamp to hold in place until the glue dries. Or CA glue & activator. Bob Smith Industries Adhesives Then follow up w/ coloring the raw wood. Maybe a tiny brush, very steady hand & watered down craft acrylic paint?

Assume moving the lighting up would have been to make more room for a mirror? Perhaps your light could be remounted with the lights facing up? I’ve seen that as an option in lighting store displays. If you did that, it changes the “height factor” for the picture and shelf. I’d suggest getting the mirror up first, and then play with the shelf and picture placement. Also, what is your mirror frame going to be? Wood? Metal? No frame? Yes, mixed metals are “in”, but you have a darker metal on the shelf support and on the updated lights, a chrome faucet, and knobs that are? look like a brassier tone and perhaps a bit more dated looking? A different faucet and different knobs would give a more updated look. But get the mirror and light figured out first.

There are myriad solutions, depending upon the damage extent, your skill level, how "good" the result has to be, and the finish that's on the door now.

I think you might want to work on dissuading the dog from doing this before you bother fixing it. I'm sympathetic to how difficult that can be (I have a beagle that hates the mailman with the fire of a thousand suns) but there's no point in fixing it if it'll be undone next week. You might be able to fix it reasonably well once or twice, but it's not feasible to do it over and over again.

sawdust maker, I am actually pretty handy. My family used to call me "Kelly Vila, this old townhouse" because I was a big DIYer in my last house. My question was more of "will this work? versus can I do it?" Thanks for the reply on the artist brushes. I know I have some of them around. The wax sticks sound like a great idea, too.

linda, the good news is that it is not a factory finish. It was stained by a painter a month ago and he left me some stain for the door and the staircase. (The scratches are on the right on the lower half. I seem them very clearly in person. lol.)

jon, sorry that you can relate. Hopefully, this will not happen very often. I usually keep the dogs in the lower level but I did not secure the doggie gate very well. We had a scratching incident on the old door but that was about four years ago.

It's OK....scratched doors are a sign that a doggie who loves and wants to protect you from the evil mail man lives there.

As long as you have a careful touch, those scratches are not terrible. I was sure they were the work of a dog. Before you do the repair, can you find a way to dissuade the devil from repeating his work? Dog training on these things is sometimes difficult. Our own little devil has her days too.

I'd definitely recommend a test piece. This will tell you what works best, and give you some practice to get it right. I'm a bit worried that even if you stain them to the right color and refinish, there will still be an obvious scratch. Filling them with a wax stick will help, but it can take some play to get the right color, and a scratch that crosses a grain line might be tougher to obscure.

sawdust maker, He has been to 28 obedience classes. He is a work in progress. I got him from the MN Wisc Collie rescue. He was found living in the woods living with another dog (apparently dumped.) When I got him he was a wreck. I couldn't even take him for a walk beacuse he had such bad panic attacks. Took a month before we could get around the block. If someone comes over, he will hide in his kennel until they leave. BUT first, he tries to scare them away by barking. He is a good dog in his own way.

I think I am going to try the wax stick. At some point, I will have it totally refinished.
