Vinyl replacement windows - need help

Hi folks -

First time at this forum. I'm trying to find out about Arnett and Herman (sp) vinyl replacement windows. I'm not that knowledgeable abouy these windows, except I'm getting all-vinyl, low-e .32 argon double-glazed, tilt-and-wash, etc.

Again, the make is Arnett and Herman, and I can't find anything about them. I've been told to stay away from Amer. Craftsman, Pella @ Lowes and a few others, but these seem to be well liked. Does anyone have any info about them??

Sure could use some expert opinions on this, folks.

Actually, I found through Google that they're called Arndt and Herman, or A & H out of N. Wilkesboro, NC, a division of ECMD Inc., which includes Arndt & Herman Building Products, Crown Heritage Stair Co., EastCoast Mouldings, ECMD Distribution and Premier Lock Systems. The company also assembles Therma-Tru doors for distribution and the upscale Avonni line of aluminum-clad window products.

All of this sounds good, but does it translate into a good product for the windows that I'm about to buy?? Thanks.

I suppose this is the wrong forum to be asking questions about windows. Go figure!!

Beige vinyl is often a huge upgrade - there are a lot of people who would like to have your color issue! :) You can absolutely do white trim with the beige windows. If you think about it's really no different than if the windows were wood. Wood windows and white trim work out perfectly fine and so with the beige/white combination. Exterior is a lil different. White house trim with beige windows isn't always the cutest look. If you want light trim exterior, all you have to do is select a lighter version of the beige on the windows. You can go so light that it almost look white but the harmony is still detectable.

I am having a similar problem now with exterior almond/tan vinyl windows. My home was painted 1/4 way around only and stopped them because the paint looked terrible against the faded vinyl. I have been back to the get new samples of paint to try around the windows, but I still can’t find a color that is compatible. My home was built in 78, and I think the windows are probably 90s. I bought the home in 2015. It is currently a beige color with green trim, very blah. I think I may go white, and the trim color I found matches the vinyl on the windows, called French Beige a Behr Marquee color. Then add shutters in the front, or I may need to change out all windows and then I can paint it whatever color I like.

Update: One window guy came out, never got back to me, second one says he can remove that middle transom, send to a factory, have them make a replacement with the same glass (several hundred dollars probably), and third guy (and the first guy) said no way to remove just that middle window, have to replace the whole thing, that the window is wrapped with a metal piece and screwed together so no way to access the window and remove it. Last guy says he has been in business 35 years and the company he works for 30 years so knows windows. Says $3600 for a whole new alliance window (apparently the current window is certainteed and Alliance bought them). He also says he is really good with getting the insurance companies to pay up even though it is past the 12 month limit they put in their paperwork. I hope he is right!!

I was also interested in Okna, but the dealer that offers the Soft-lite also sells the Okna windows. He said he didn't carry the 800 series, but had the 500 series - which I was told did not offer the horizontal internal grids for my transoms. They seem to offer the Elements as their top window followed by the Okna 500s and then the Soft-lite Bainbridge LE as the step down. I was given references by both the Elements and Restorations dealers we are considering, and I am planning to drive by a few of their jobs to see what we think. My current wood windows are 32" x 62" DHs with 27.5" X 27.5" visible glass for both the upper and lower sashes. The Soft-lite Elements visible glass measurements from the dealer are 24.43" x 27" on the top sash and and 25.43" x 28" for the lower sash. So ultimately with the inserts, I'm looking at a loss of visible glass of 3" on the top sash width and 2" on the bottom sash width, but the heights are a wash. The loss of glass is a real issue with my wife mostly for the affect it might have on the exterior of our home. I'm going to get the VG measurements for the Restorations windows as well just for comparison. I know my wife and I will ultimately have to pick what we think is best, but if we decided to go with the Restorations, is it still durable enough in your estimation to be considered a good choice here? I'm concerned mostly about durability and my wife mostly about aesthetics. The Restorations seems to be the middle ground for us...also, the Restorations dealer sent me an updated estimate that is $ 500 lower than before (transoms were not added up correctly initially) so now we are at $12,500 which is a little more in line with the other window estimates.

I know how you feel, as I asked for some advice in a different posting and never got any responses at all. Guess I can try and weigh in, seeing how we both live in the same city and have access to a lot of the same products.

I haven't heard of the windows you are talking about, so I can't say whether or not they're good products. I just had 3 reputable local companies come out and give me estimates on vinyl replacement windows and pretty much all of the brands they showed me were good and names I had never heard of. All had nice welds, colors, weather stripping, etc.. After a while they all start to look the same, and I realized that it's best to just find a company that does reputable work and use whatever product they're selling. I've read it many times on other forums--installation is key. A medium grade window, installed correctly, is better than a high end with a bad install. If the company you are looking at does good work and has been around a while, then it's worth considering them.

Thanks tmgeorgo. Appreciate the response. What are you hearing about average price per window and average install price per window? I don't know if you're getting replacemenet windows, but if you are I assume you're getting close to what I'm ordering (see first post).

Usually if someone doesn't post on a question it's because we can't offer any assistance on your product. The only help we could offer would be installation issues or product line we know about. The only real recommendation I can offer is don't pay the final payment until your completely satisfied with the job
