Scratches on Marvin Clad Area

Today a new Marvin window was installed and I noticed a couple of scratches on the aluminum clad area. They are only about a 1/2 inch or so and the GC says that stuff like that happens all the time due to shipping etc. He says it can be touched up. I was wondering if indeed this is the norm. Thanks. Marvin definitely has parts for 10 year old windows. The distributor may not have them in stock but the factory definitely has them available for special ordering. And those scratches come from handling and refusing the windows means the distributor ordered you new one and Marvin more than likely has no idea as realistically the issues is not theirs.

Try some rubbing compound first if that does not work Marvin has spray touch up, just rough the surface with some steel wool and apply spray

Well, most houses in the bay area are still well over a million, and we are in that category. I know it sounds like a little amount, but I just keep thinking that I could spend the $4000+ in other ways (put in a central vac system, get the sub zero instead of the other fridge, etc), and get much more for my money. I really need to find an interior white painted wood window, and a white painted fiberglass window, and see if there's a real difference. I was hoping someone would have experienced this before as well. You're probably right, and I just have to jump and make that decision.

Last year we replaced five picture windows with Marvin extruded aluminum exterior, wood interior windows. Our previous thermal windows had fogged and were a mess. At this same time we re-sided the house with HardiPlank concrete siding. The extruded aluminum matches exactly the shade of paint we were using and the windows blend in well. My husband stained and sealed the wood interior of the windows and says the quality is excellent. One large pane arrived with a few scratches, we complained, Marvin came out and replaced the window. No problem. And they were fast. We have 5 more windows to install, we should start in a few weeks. We need to replace some plain exterior wooden entry doors, they are a mess. We are thinking of going fiberglass, or will go with Marvin if they have an aluminum outside/wood inside, which I am not sure they do. The dealer in Knoxville, TN., gave us a great price on the windows, Marvin Planning Center, Sam Ledford was our contact. We still have not met him, we ordered by email(as we live 1 1/2 hrs. out of town) and picked up some of the windows and had the larger ones delivered. The quotes are for a full replacement on my windows. I guess what sticks in my mind is the clad still has wood and has the potential for rot down the road. As for the Infinity it does not seem there is anything to rot on these windows although I am not sure which finish will holdup better in the long run. Another positive for the Infinity is the outside can be painted if necessary down the road not sure that is true the clad. So not sure what is best longevity. Both appear to be solid windows. I am more impressed with the clad dealer who has communicated installation procedures and what happens to minimize damage to the area surrounding the windows on the interior which will leave paint and wallpaper in tact when the job is done.

Looks like you and your GC have a couple of items to work out. While the aluminum clad window is in no way shape or form a bullet proof material, it is considerable more shielded and less prone to deteriorate as compared to bare wood. Wood windows require considerably more maintenance and upkeep. No comparison. A properly clad window will live much longer is only maintained slightly. If you need wood to the interior, have you considered a fiberglass window? Same construction look to the exterior, available with wood on the inside, and usually a bit cheaper. I would stay with the factory version of the roll away screen and I think your reasoning on the push out casements is completely correct.

Your experience with Marvin packing appears to be the same as mine. I would guess these windows are casements. Of the 25 windows ordered I had three casements. The casements were inadequately protected and all three had damage similar to yours. At first Marvin insisted upon using a little touch up paint. I rejected that idea. I paid for the best finish in the industry and I refuse to have a touch-up via rattle can. I rejected the windows and they sent new replacement frames. Marvin needs to improve up the packaging for Casements. The best window company has some serious problems with packing. This is such a simple remedy but yet they appear to be cutting cost in an important area. All of the double hung windows were packaged well and protected on all corners and edges, both sides. No damage on them. It befuddles me that they ship their casements windows so haphazard and there double hung windows so well. My recommendation: review the window condition closely upon arrival. Reject windows where the metal is exposed no matter how small. You paid for factory fresh and you should receive factory fresh.

This is a picture venting window btw. The contractor's workers picked up the window and installed directly. Only after it was installed did I notice. The contractor said it can happen through shipping etc. I said they should have inspected before accepting. He said that for such a small detail then I would have to be there to inspect.

I'm beginning to think I never should have hired this contractor to install the windows to begin with, because in addition they flashed them improperly. The workers say it's right, but I printed out the installation guides for the windows as well as the flashing material and they say it should be done another way.

Agree. When you pay for the best, you should get the best - in perfect condition. If enough windows go back, they'll get the message, eventually. It sure looks like your contractor doesn't have your back, either. I think you need to have a sit down with him and let him know what your expectations are. His and Marvin Windows reputations are built on customer delight as well as buyer's remorse. Ask the builder which he wants. BTW, a bit of bad news is that we have found that Marvin does NOT keep spare parts on hand forever. We have a hardware defect on a casement window and after about 10 years we heard from a Marviin supplier that some broken hardware is no longer in stock. Now what? Throw out the whole window? Does anyone know where I can get a part for 10+ year casement? Thanks.

Not only that, but to expect something to be in "perfect condition" is going to lead to a lot of disappointment in life, as people aren't perfect and therefore anything made by people will have flaws as well. Small scratches can be touched up in a way that reasonable customers will find acceptable.
