I re-upholstered my kitchen chairs in a black/white toile, and have black/white transferware~I love it, too. If you find fabric on sale, purchase it now. Joann's regularly has 50% off with a coupon~look in the Sunday ads. That's how I got mine.

Do you know what color red? I painted the PR RL Balmoral Red, a very deep red color, and more relaxing than most reds, if red *can* be relaxing. If you happen to go to HD, take a look at the swatch. ;o)

It's not black and white Toile, but it's red. tell you DH not to worry. This is the second red bathroom we have had.

My daughters bedroom at her house has B&W Toile, with red and khaki accents. Looks great!

DH is cool with the idea now that he realizes all the white and black accents that will also be in the room. I haven't found a red yet, but have the name of one Ralph Lauren color "Townhouse." You know how long it takes me to make up my mind so it most probably will take me all of the next 10 months to finally decide on a color. I do want a deep red. Something that's not too vibrant. Does that make sense? Any colors you want to suggest will be appreciated.

Since the only fabric in the room will be the shower curtain and curtains for a small window I'm wondering if I should try to find something ready made (if that would be cheaper). I can't sew so if I find fabric cheap I'd still have to pay someone (I'm sure a lot of money) to make them. What are your thoughts on those 2 options? Now that toile is all the rage I'm sure I wouldn't have trouble finding ready made stuff.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I swear if it weren't for y'all and this forum I don't know what I would do when it comes to decorating an entire house. One thing I know for sure, my new house will look so much better having you for inspiration, ideas, and most of all, the fun in trying to get it right! LOL

I hope people w/ red bathrooms will post photos...I was thinking about red for our guest bath too. I want a deep hue, but not burgundy. I just need a vision!

As a person who has a red kitchen and a black and white backsplash, I say "You go, girl!" I was afraid of color but decided it was only paint so I took the plunge. I'll never go back to boring walls again.

For those of you who have painted red, tell me, what color primer should be used and how many coats did it take you? I read somewhere that someone did a read room and they used Pepto Bismol colored primer and painted 3 coats, letting the paint dry thoroughly between each coat, like 1 a day. I'm going to go get a quart of the formula the OP used in the room and want to get any primer at the same time. I'm going to do a sample board to see how it looks in person.

We used the Pepto-Bismol color after applying 3-4 coats and it still streaking. We finished up the whole space with one coat of Pepto and one coat of a red that is very Italian in color but it had a Chinese name, cannot remember the name but it truly looked baked-on.

Last year we painted a hallway and accent wall inthe great room BM Rouge which is a red. This was over a BM paint a greeny blue.Many people told us how hard it would be etc etc, and it was difinitely in a place where the light would hit and any imperfections would show.It only took two coats including the primer. The man at the paint store told hubby not to freak out with the primer which was a sick pink color. So he carried on and did the second coat and it is georgous and many peole have complimented him on the job. I have to say I was really nervous being told only two coats, as we had to use 3 coats to cover the builder beige in our bedroom. Go for it.

Patsy, you'll want to use a charcoal grey~the 'pros' don't know what the he** they're talking about when they tell you to 'use pink'. Why paint a light color on an already light wall? Duh!

I don't know if you saw my earlier post, but painted my PR, fireplace wall in the LR, and the upper portion of the DR red. Each got a coat of charcoal gray primer first.

I needed to do a little touch up for getting my home on the market, and thought, i'll just paint over those little nicks. No way! They came out looking pink! Since I was out of the gray primer, and only needed a smidgen, I took my black craft paint, and brushed it on where needed. Let it dry, and bingo, one coat! ;o)

msrose, I'm sorry, but I'm unable to post a picture. However, I will tell you about my kitchen. The focal wall is SW Real Red. I painted the backsplash in a black and white tile pattern. On the red wall, I have the print "Pates Baroni," which is basically black, white and red. It's the one of the mime with a platter of spaghetti. I use black accents and some red. There is a red tea kettle on the stove and on the table is an iron bowl with red apples. I never tire of the kitchen -- or the red wall. Sorry for butting in on the post. I just wanted to answer msrose's question.

I found "a deal" on some absolute black granite in a honed finish; I thought it would dress up the 20-year-old oak vanity in the hall bath. Well, one thing lead to another ... you know how that is! I bought a travertine vessel sink and changed to a wall mount faucet (both eBay purchases). This morning, I spray painted an old gold Bombay mirror and green Lowes lamp with flat black, then highlighted both with bronze.
DH thinks I'm a little bit crazy ... guess I'll lay low for a couple of days.

When I painted the bathroom red (see above pic), the Lowes guy looked for the recommended primer in his computer, and mixed a primer that was gray in color. I used 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of red. I didn't wait a day in between steps; I just made sure that the primer or paint was dry before beginning the next step.

When we painted our dining room SW Barn, we used a gray primer. It took DH 2-3 coats. It is a new house but we were adding the colors ourself (to have the painters do it would have cost us more money than we have). When the painters came by to do some trim, the head guy said that he would have tinted the primer with the paint by 25% or something to that effect. So, either way may work.

IMO, the darker the primer, the less coats. I used a charcoal, and only needed one coat, since I couldn't see the antique white peeking thru underneath.

This was used on one of the Decorating Cents episodes. ;o)

Just out of curiosity I have to ask what brand of paint was used when you used grey primer. We used BM as I said and were told to use the two color process, and this is what they recommend at the BM stores. I think maybe different paints work differently.I would say use whichever primer the paint stores recommends, for your particular brand of paint.

When I go get my quart mixed from the formula used in the inspiration photo (by the way that was an eggshell Valspur paint she used), I'll ask them about what they recommend for the primer.

Don't mean to hijack but you can you explain a bit how you painted that mirror?? I have an old gold one, though without as much detail. Did you have to prime/sand or just spray and go? And your red is just rich!

brutuses, craftymeca - I used Valspar paint (in a flat finish) over the gray primer

mpwdmom - Re. the mirror, I just sprayed with flat black, let that dry, then lightly hit the "high spots" with a sponge that had been dipped in a bronze patina (Valspar Decorative Effects from Lowes).

Hi Susan -

That was the slowest part of the process. This is how I did it, but I'm sure there are easier ways.

- cut a piece of old wrapping paper slightly smaller than mirror

- use masking tape to attach paper to front of mirror. Try to insure that the mirror is completely covered, but that none of the tape is covering the mirror's frame.

- If any tape is overlapping the mirror's frame, use x-acto to carefully remove.

I probably spent 1/2 hour or so covering the mirror. That is the first/last time I bought a mirror that couldn't be easily removed from it's frame!

SW recommends gray primers. On each color chip it tells you P1, P2, etc...

BM usually tints the primer. However, I just used the BM Aura paint, a very dark gray green over dingy off white, and it basically covered in one coat without primer. (I just had a few spots to touch up.)

Sounds GORGEOUS! I know just the inspiration photo you're referring to. That was one knocked out gorgeous room.

We painted the bathroom red in our old house. I used ((((Gasp!!!))) Wal-Mart Colorplace paint. One coat. No primer at all.

I love dark little powder rooms!

Thanks Deb, I may try it. My mirror is a really nice one that I have hanging over the mantle, rectangle-shaped and beveled, but the frame is gold...so I want to ditch that.

And reno, what a beautiful powder room! The red looks so warm, is the vanity painted or stained, I can't tell. And using a non-bath rug is so classy.

We used the BM Raspberry Truffle in the library and the painter told me to have them mix a primer in Raspberry Truffle at 50%. One coat of primer and one coat of paint, same day.

Looks fab except for where I need to touch up way way way up high around the beams.

Well I did our small powder room cranberry 3 years ago. My DH did think I was crazy, especially when the paint first went on pink! I kept telling him it would dry darker, praying it would! It did. Since then I have found you all, and need to update the room.

It need another coat, plus I want to add beadboard floor to ceiling on the back wall. I will try to post pics. I redid the counter by mosaicing it with toile tile pieces I got at the craft store and just plain white and burgundy tiles from Lowes.

Some of my friends call it my hooker bath room! I still love it and just need to finish it! The door needs to be changed from opening in to opening out and needs new molding.

And I've done the Kilz red paint from Walmart with no primer too, just like renofan. Took two coats to cover both in my kitchen and in my entry, but it went very easily.

laura, very pretty color. Red, no you didn't miss the show. The bath is being built right now in my new house. Won't be ready to decorate my "brothel bath" until next year. Yes laura that's kind of what comes to mind when I see red baths. I would have never considered doing any room in red even though I love to wear red, but when I saw that room on rate my space, I was in-love. It is the most beautiful red and toile room I've ever seen. I hope I can meet that degree of beautiful when I do mine.

Did I tell y'all I've decided to paint the ceiling black? It's a tall ceiling anyway so I'd like to make it dissappear in that small space.

totallyblessed and red, y'all missed my post last Sunday about not doing the red bath because the colors I've finally decided for the house would clash terribly with the black and white toile and so I changed the bath to a different toile and it will be a sand/gold rather than red with black and white. I expect my fabric in next week. I won't need it for a while, but ordered it because I could only find it at one store on-line and was afraid it would be discontinued as was my inspiration tapestry where I pulled all my colors from.

Here's another photo of the inspiration tapestry. I didn't get much feed back from folks so I figured they just didn't like it, which is fine. I like having a number of colors to pull from rather than just one or two. I want the house to flow from room to room. The actual tapestry will only be used for pillows or something else minor in the great room. I could only get 1.6 yds as it has been discontinued. My luck!! However, when I saw it I knew all those colors appealed to me and I could make my house beautiful using them throughout. I'm thinking about the sample from Carolina Chair as my sofa. It's a microfibre and I have to be practical having all these pets.
