Geeze...I'm going to quit making Christmas goodies

Everything I try is a mess...

Today I tried the white choc. fudge with the gum drops. It was sitting up before I could stir up the white choc chips...I got so upset I forgot the marshmellow creme.

It's pretty and it can be eaten..but it's just not right...Will probably get hard as a rock.

I messed up the pralines the other day.

I've messed up several batches of no bakes...

It's been a bad week.

I had to get a new microwave and I think this one has too much power compared to my old one. I don't like it.

Next time I'll drop a minute and see if that works.

Hope it doesn't ruin my peanut butter fudge.

I made my fudge and peanut brittle in the microwave before and never had any trouble.

Calm down & take it easy, we all have days like that. Just stop an do it another time, it will all come together. Now go do something fun.

I made 7 half pints of pink champagne jelly. Was supposed to have been 10, but all I got was 7. Used the recipe before and always got 10.

Well, I'll use the other jars for marinated olives that I have to jar up the end of the week.

I have pared down my baking significantly as far as cookies and treats go. When the kids were home I made tins and trays of cookies for bus drivers, teachers' lounges, older folks in our neighborhood who no longer baked for themselves, etc.. My group of 6 close women friends looked so forward to them because they didn't bake. Then the kids grew up and moved, we moved from the old neighborhood and all my women friends started South Beach, WW, or Sugar Busters diets and I didn't want to undermine their efforts. A couple years ago when my Mom was diagnosed w/ breast cancer (her 2nd time) right after T-Giving I was overwhelmed w/ her care over the holidays and just didn't do the baking that year. The world did not come to an end, and I discovered that I could choose to keep the tradition - or not. These days I bake when I choose to, when I have guests and when asked to bring dessert to a gathering. Like someone above noted, it's not like in years past when people really seemed to treasure the homemade baked gift. The cost in time and ingredients seems greater than in the past. I'm delighted to bake for those I know enjoy it, but I don't dole out the homemade treats the way I used to.

Here is the recipe for Lime and Tea loaf. I used Earl Grey tea when I made it and didn't use the nuts because I wanted a more uniformly textured loaf. Lime and Tea Loaf 1 cup sugar 6 tbsp. shortening 2 eggs 1 ÃÂ½ cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking powder ÃÂ½ tsp. salt 2 tsp. lime zest ÃÂ½ cup cold strong Earl Grey (or other flavor) tea ÃÂ½ cup chopped toasted almonds 1/4 cup sugar 2 tbsp. lime juice Cream sugar, shortening and eggs together thoroughly. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and lime zest. Mix well. Add alternately with cold tea to creamed mixture, starting and ending with flour mixture. Fold in nuts. Put in greased parchment paper-lined 8 ÃÂ½ x 4 ÃÂ½ inch loaf pan. Level the top. Bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Leave in pan. Heat remaining sugar and lime juice until sugar is dissolved. Pierce loaf all over the top with wooden pick. Spoon syrup over bread slowly, letting small amounts sink into loaf before adding more. Cool loaf before removing from pan.

Earlier this week I went to the supermarket and bought all the chocolate goodies .... 3 boxes of chocolates, 5 boxes of scorched almonds, 3 bags of choc coins and one box of After Eight mints. I hid them in a big box (crockpot size) on a low shelf in the pantry ... bad move! DH came home Tues night and found gold foil from the bags of coins all over the floor! I put a heavy weight on top of the box and felt secure in the knowlegde that she couldn't possibly move the weight, lift the box lid and cause any more havoc ... wrong move! While we were at work yesterday she had herself another little party! DS got home first and text me to say there was scorched almonds, after dinner mints and a huge amount of confetti sized cardboard packaging all over the kitchen floor!!!! I don't think she's actually consumed alot of the chocolate (luckily!) but she's torn alot of the packaging - two of her favourite passtimes has always been shredding cardboard and dis-embowling soft toys! Now that box is up on the HIGHEST shelf in the pantry with what remains of the goodies! And I have to brave the supermarket again to replace what's gone .... GRRRR!

I made caramel and chocolate covered Lorna Doones and pretzels. The caramel is too hard. Lots of time, work and money down the drain. But I'm forging on.

I have used 2-3 new recipes this year. None were satisfactory.

I still have time to do my Christmas must-haves, I hope.

What can we blame all these failures on? I wish I knew!!

I made the vanilla fudge using the vanilla frosting in a can, a bag of vanilla chips and a bunch of chopped walnuts and boy is it ever good.

Pattico....take a deep breath. Things will turn OK....better than that...have a Tom & Jerry. Then you won't care! LOL
You have much more ambitious goodies planned than I do. Last week I made pumpkin bread and delivered them, then today I made a double batch of almond bark using sliced almonds and craizens. This evening I bagged it all up, 4 good size pieces per bag and tomorrow I'll put them on the table down in the APT house mail room for all of the folks in the building.

Patti I really hate to tell you this, but the gum drop fudge didn't have marshmallow cream! LOL
I made it this morning and its not bad, I just tasted a little corner that broke off.
Pralines I didn't make though so can't help there.
Try again. You can't mess up twice. LOL

Patti - I feel your pain. But my problem is that I've bought ingredients for a gazillion things and haven't made but two of them. The days just keep getting away from me!!!

Connie...I followed my fudge recipe...for marshmallow/choc chip fudge...and used white choc chips instead. That is also how I make my peanut butter fudge.

I'll have to check to see how the "real" recipe goes...

All the mistakes haven't just been today...this has been going on for a couple weeks...Seems like everything I've touched has been spilled or broke...lol

I Share your pain too, Patti. Prailines burned *(Yuk). But, I spent yesterday making buckeyes....today dipping them in chocolate. I confess that after making these (for my non-wheat non dairy grandson) for the last 6 years, this years production have made me proud. (about 125) Who'da thought, using the food processor for mixing and electric skillet for keeping the chocolate warm would spell success. So easy!

Yikes! The days aren't slippng by... they're flashing past like a speeding bullet! I made the gumdrop fudge yesterday and it turned out great! It's sweetened condensed milk, not marshmallow creme for that recipe. We liked it so well that I'm going to try doing the same with chocolate almond bark and sweetened condensed milk to make a little chocolate fudge!

Our big boo boo this year came yesterday. Emi and her friend Lexie made some of the candy where you use a pretzel ring (little circle about an inch or inch and a half across) and put a chocolate kiss in the middle. Soften in the oven for a couple of minutes and then press a red or green M&M on top. Simple and failproof.. right? The first two big pans came out beautifully. Then they did the last (smaller) pan. I had them leave the oven on, because I had more cookies to do a little later. Maybe 45 minutes later, it still smelled like something was being baked and I looked in the oven. There was that last pan still there! The chocolate kisses had actually turned hard again, kind of crusted over. The pretzels looked ok. I pulled them out and decided to let them cool and try one to see if they were edible. Nope! Not so good! They didn't look burned but had a real scorched taste. I ended up throwing them out. That was a bit of a costly mistake with all those Hershey's Chocolate Kisses in there! Poor Emi felt so bad. I told her (and truthfully) that I've left that last sheet of cookies or whatever in the oven quite a few different times. It's so easy to do if you don't set the timer!
