Replacement Windows without removing siding?

I'm look at getting "new construction" style double hung windows to replace a few existing worn out windows- most likely Marvin Integrity. "Insert" replacement windows aren't the best option in my case due to the construction of the old aluminum window frames.

It's my understanding that "new construction" style windows can have the nailing fins removed and installed without removing the surrounding siding and j-channel. Does anyone have any experience/feedback with this installation method? Would this still allow for proper weatherproofing?

If temporarily removing the siding and j-channel around the windows would result in a significantly higher quality install I could probably do that- It's vinyl siding so as long as it's not so cold that cracking of the siding is a concern I could handle that- a few hours before to remove and a few hours afterward to replace; not something I'd want to do if there wasn't much of a benefit though.
