Greige experts/fans:Why do my greige paint colors look icky at ni

Is there any one out there that loves greige but finds that at night the colors look icky? Or perhaps they look more pigmented at night? In my home I am refering to the colors Benjamin Moore Camouflage (not sure if it's truely a greige) and BM Manchester Tan. Maybe with the camouflage it's that there is so much gray and a bit of green that it turns muddy. Manchester tan looks so dreary at night in my son's room. In the day light manchester tan looks great in his room and also looks so pretty with pink that I want to paint my daughter's room with it. In her room it looks too fleshy and dark even though my son's room is right next door and they get the same western light. I love both of these colors all times of the day except at night. And with fall and winter coming I'm afraid I will like them less and less. I did hire a designer and she pointed out that I need to accessories and can't expect to throw a color up on the wall and love it on its own. Perhaps there are some colors this can be done with but I think there are other colors that need to be pulled in by accessories...so I totally get what she's talking about...but the colors still look icky. (I know, sometimes you just can't win with me ;-)

Has anyone else had this experience with colors?

Only in samples. After I painted blobs on the wall, and looked at the different colors in day as well as evening light, I knew which ones needed to take a hike. I wasn't fond of the many green hues, so knew I needed to find something in a warm hue to get that 'golden glow' I was looking for. I don't think you'll find a greige that's warm~~that's just the nature of the beast. ;o)

Of the last picture posted I like the Plymouth Rock the best and in the order you have mounted towards the right. Have you figured out how deep a color you want? Have you figured out how saturated a color you want. I am not sure if I am using these terms correctly. When I say saturated I mean less gray and more of the true color such as blue, green, yellow, red, etc. It was so difficult for me to see the underlying colors in the grays and I was looking at in my remodel. I had to paint swatches next to each other and live with it for a few days. Then, that information might lead me in a new direction, because of the new knowledge I gained while living with the samples. Different walls and times of days are telling on colors. bronwynsmom: I really appreciate your candor and understanding of what I'm going through. It isn't that easy an answer and you spelled out why! My FEELINGS are telling me to get a (slightly bluish)grayish carpet color (but slightly brownish too if that makes sense??) (which is a tad on the "cool" side) as it looks like it comes close to matching the grout/mortar in the fieldstone fireplace. It's possible though that the most COMPATIBLE carpet in terms of being on the same range of colors may be a normal "warm" tannish color due to my orange oak woodwork and camel colored chairs but that feels so same-ole same-ole. That's why I'm having trouble deciding which look will be better or more comfortable feeling. (I am a worry-wort by nature so if I can get a calming color scheme going I feel I might calm down too? Could this happen with color?) "Relax" might be the most applicable suggestion you make, because I'm not relaxed about it is why I think everyone in my family runs the other way when they know I'm trying to decide on a color for something... Anyways, I know you're absolutely right on with everything you wrote so I will do just what you suggest, give it my best and cross my fingers. Thanks so much!

On the left front side of the mantel you can see where I tried General Finishes Java Gel Stain. I sanded it lightly, applied the gel and wiped off. You can see lots of little chicken scratch marks that held the stain. I don't know what kind of wood it's made from, but my guess is not a quality wood. Here's a close-up of the small section of handrail I tried it on as well. I don't know anything about staining, but my guess is I'm going to have to strip and sand to bare wood 96 balusters and 9 newel posts, etc. Ugh. I do think a dark color would look good on the mantel with the red brick, but it's not really the look I'm going for. I really wanted a complete white mantel and surround, but I don't think it's gonna look right with the surround the way the brick fireplace looks (Not much space on each side/thick hearth). I do appreciate all your suggestions and I know I originally started this thread cause the wall color is in my kitchen and this is the kitchen forum. I tried posting in remodeling forum about fireplace/stairs, but didn't get any responses. I will definitely take all your suggestions to heart as we finish up our kitchen and move into the living area to remodel. Any pics you find that would be helpful will be much appreciated. On another note, my Barker Cabinets have shipped!!

Update...Well, to all posters, the deed is done!. I purchased SW Peppercorn paint sample and it came out almost a powder blue.. Dragon's Breath and River Silt were brown.. So I ended up with my original thought of BM Wrought Iron and held my breath while they painted. Before... After While it does not show up here, the shutters match the blue-gray of the roof very well. The shutter closest to the door is closer to actual color. The brick is gray in strong sunlight and greige when cloudy. Overall, I am happy with the outcome and have accomplished what I wanted to do. All adjacent homes and across the street have taupe and tan painted brick and it had to be different to keep me happy plus I intend to sell within the next two yrs, so it could not be something that would offend buyers. The one thing I learned however, is that it is hardly fair to ask opinions of others when the colors are so "off" via computer. How can we expect a reliable answer? With that said, I shall probably be back with questions of color on my next project! :)

patty cakes-I went through so many samples and spent so much money. When I saw a huge portion of my wall painted with camouflage I thought it looked great! Silver, gold, black, and white frames all looked lovely with the color. It's gray yet green and also a bit "warm". It just looks yucky at night in my dining room so perhaps it's just the type of lighting. Anyhow, my point is that I thought I did a great job of weeding out the one's I din't like. Oh well

Palimpsest-you're right about lighting! Camouflage looks pea green in my kitchen which has recessed halogen lighting, and looks more gray/green in the other rooms (well at night it looks muddy in my dining room). Changing out the light in my sons room was what I was thinking I should try so thank you for confirming that!

Try something a bit darker. I have Silver Fox in a few rooms and I love the way it looks at night. In fact, I prefer it at night. In the day the purplish undertone is more apparent.
