The colors looks fanastic on my screen, but outside I dont know, I am definately not a paint expert. I just finished painting my front door which faces east. I initially had picked a charcoal gray, looked great on the big white cardboard I sampled it on. When done the door look blue! I had to go back to the paint store to have the color adjusted to almost a black., I didnt bother with the sample board this time. Painted the door, its not the almost black as the paint chip but a medium grey brown, which luckily goes well with my exterior so I am leaving it alone. Outside painting is very tricky imo!

Is there any glass in your door or is it all wood? And as noted, what do these colours look like outside?

How much of your roof shows? If you choose colours with blue in them, the blue of the roof may be highlighted and become an eye-catcher. Do you want people to see the roof or the house. I know what I want.

melle_sacto...A change of door is not in my plans as I just had this one installed last year. It is mahogany jams and fiberglass door.

blfenton..This picture answers your door question and I might add, you bring up some important questions.. Not sure I have the answers, though:). I would not want my roof to be a focal point but if anything, I would rather the door catch one 's eye first.

It is raining or I would run out and take a picture of house, which is a low lying long traditional ranch with 6 windows plus shutters running across front.

RoseAbbey..Your problem is exactly what I was afraid of happening to me but you gave me some peace of mind with your solution.

the paint store adjusted the color by adding yellow and brown. Yellow to remove the blue and brown to darken. As I looked at it today again,(I just finished it yesterday), the door actually goes well with the roof which has brown/grey shingles.....lucky me!

I am happy I could give you some peace of mind.

I would be concerned that your gray color for bricks might be too pale for outdoor setting. It might just look like white out there, but maybe that is what you want... But I am no expert.i would like to see a swatch outside before deciding...

any possiblity of going with something more to the matching of your beautiful door for shutters.

I think that combo will be just fine. It might read a bit blue overall, but it's a nice blue. Re the roof, some houses look good with a cap on, some don't. Can you post a picture of your house? Maybe we can do a mock-up.

Break in the clouds!. Here is a quick shot and I did not get the whole house in with iPhone but I hope this will do.. Existing color of brick is a putty and has charcoal brown shutters.. The new paint selection, Pewter Tankard, is darker and more gray.

Bless your heart awn03, you are going the extra mile for me.. The mockup does not excite me at all.. Is that Pewter Tankard for the body of the house?

The roof appears much darker in mockup than in real life.. Now, I am getting nervous.

Our first house was a cape style house with a dark roof, so a similar look to your house, but a steeper roof. We used BM Nantucket Gray and a creamy white trim and got lots of compliments on the color.

You are getting a much higher contrast between the shutters and house in your new combo...do you think that is what you don't like? I also have a painted brick home, so I pay a lot of attention to them! I have been seeing a trend towards a more monochromatic look...the shutters and trim maybe just a shade or two darker than the bricks. Honestly, more like what you currently have, really. I wonder what it would look like if you used a lighter shade for the shutters?

nini804- You have hit the mark.. I would prefer a lighter gray but taking all samples outside and working with them, the darker one seemed the way to go.. My favorite combo is to use SW Peppercorn with the other two colors.

Update...Well, to all posters, the deed is done!. I purchased SW Peppercorn paint sample and it came out almost a powder blue.. Dragon's Breath and River Silt were brown.. So I ended up with my original thought of BM Wrought Iron and held my breath while they painted.

While it does not show up here, the shutters match the blue-gray of the roof very well. The shutter closest to the door is closer to actual color.

The brick is gray in strong sunlight and greige when cloudy. Overall, I am happy with the outcome and have accomplished what I wanted to do. All adjacent homes and across the street have taupe and tan painted brick and it had to be different to keep me happy plus I intend to sell within the next two yrs, so it could not be something that would offend buyers.

The one thing I learned however, is that it is hardly fair to ask opinions of others when the colors are so "off" via computer. How can we expect a reliable answer? With that said, I shall probably be back with questions of color on my next project! :)

nosoccermom..when?. You mean after purchasing nine samples :)...it was when the painter did the shutters at his shop, returned and laid them temporarily against the front of the house.. With the western exposure, the sun hit them and a slight blueness, matching variable shingles of the roof, I breathed again and with a smile.. When the shutters were hung, I gave the painter and crew a thumbs up and they all breathed a sigh of relief.

Two exterior color specialists told me black....I just could not do it.. It was then that I posted here for hand holding.. Thanks everyone.

Looks great. I just bought peppercorn to do the portion of my FR wall below a chair rail. As I read through, I was thinking it would look good with your door, but it does have a lot of white in it -- that probably looks a lot different outdoors in the sun than on the interior. Glad it worked out so well for you.
