Hickory Chair is high quality and made in the US. I've linked their page that lists stores in GA that carry their furniture.

Any of those places should carry high-quality furniture as a general rule. ALSO--if you are not opposed to used furniture...look for places that specialize in mid-century modern stuff. Much of it was made by high-end makers (Henredon, for example) and it is less expensive than similar quality new.

It is frustrating, I know. Others here have great luck with Craigslist, and have gotten some really amazing stuff for cheap. The only success I've had with Craigslist is when I'm looking for something something generic, such as when I furnished my grandchildren's room and needed headboards, a low square coffee table for doing puzzles, etc.

In the rest of my home,l I tend to buy new and almost always travel to North Carolina before I buy so I can see what I'm buying. I know what you're saying about local stores. Even the "better" furniture stores have reverted to the lowest common denominator. I also usually buy Lexington furniture because I know the quality and they stand firmly behind their products.

Have you checked local antique malls? There's a great pair of modern chairs with an ottoman for $125 in my local mall. I wish I had a place to use them.

Room and board has some nice modern stuff. Estate sales and craigslist too. The only problem is it does take alot of time to hunt for these object but well worth it IMHO.

pps--I can't find much MCM stuff locally---can you post pics if the chairs are still available? Or contact info? I'll pay you a finder's fee!

I've had really good luck on Craigslist finding true mid-century furniture. You have to be a little patient, know what you're looking for, and be willing to drive a little distance if need be.

eBay has some MCM and other styles from higher end manufacturers. You can use the advanced search feature to limit you results to find items within driving distance.

Here's one of the chairs and the ottoman. I had taken a picture to see if my sister was interested. Obviously needs to be reupholstered but for $125 for 2 chairs and an ottoman, well worth it. The other chair has a lower back so it's not identical.

How about a consignment store? I went to one over the summer, and they have some great stuff. Also, I found an antique store. The owners will "look" for you. They've got their eyes out for a retro blue dinette for me.

The MCM stuff on ebay is a little pricey, BUT I've seen, for example, end tables made in China for $350, and I'd rather have a real MCM piece for that amount.

Unfortunately, the stuff that used to be cheap that nobody wants is no longer so.

I agree that Hickory Chair has really good quality furniture and they have some great looking modern pieces out right now. I was just looking at some of their pieces the other day but they are pricey.

We got our Palliser sectional from sofasandsectionals.com. It has a retro modern look to it (the Venus) and they have many other modern styles. Their fabric choice, Phoenix, feels like the softest leather you have ever felt. It cleans up with a sponge. We got the brushed aluminum legs to give it a more modern vibe too. I had to call direct because the website did not have a button to choose that option. If you go to the Palliser website, you can browse the possibilities there or on the sofasandsectionals site.

I second the CL and ebay recommendations for MCM pieces. It also helps to go to the library and look at some housing mags. The highbrow kinds show many ads for furniture that is gorgeous (and usually outside of our budget).
You can also freshen up older styles with changing hardware and sometimes painting. If the bones are good, there is a lot you can do.....

Have you been to the Savvy Snoot? It is a consignment store close to Ikea, but nothing like Ikea. It is VERY eclectic, and is a good place for accent pieces. It leans traditional or even country because that is what you will see in Atlanta.

Across the street is Room and Board. If I was truly interested in modern furniture (not necessarily MCM)they have beautiful solid pieces, a little better than C&B, which actually isn't bad, just not as long lasting as you might want.

When I went to Nashville to visit DD, we went to two small antique stores specializing in MCM, so I know there have to be some in Atlanta.

City Issue is the MCM store in Atlanta. I just bought a large credenza from there while on vacation a few months ago. I know it is on Elizabeth St., not sure exactly what that's close to since I don't live there. Seemed to be in the midtown sort of area between Buckhead and downtown? Anyway, that had a lot of really great pieces. Not all of it is super cheap, but it isn't mega-expensive, either.

I second the recommendation for Mathews Furniture just off Paces Ferry near Starbucks and the OK Cafe. They have a lot of Baker furniture which I love. I also find some things at Ethan Allen. Their furniture is still made in America. Both of these places are pricey but I find in the long run I am happier. I used to shop at Flack's once in awhile before they closed. I understand that Hilda is back from South Florida and reopened in ATL. She used to do a lot of old world and contemporary. Good luck!

Aw man, pps...that's one of my favorite styles of chair. What a steal!! So comfortable and so versatile; modern and classic at the same time. Do you know the manufacturer?

Like said above CL, goodwill, moving sales ect... Today I scored a brand new black leather lined Bentley Prince Street Carpet Company 8x8 area rug for $60, the owner/ designer won it at a show. Last week I scored a like brand new NS design leather sofa with black piping for $150. I also found a chair in the exact lines of sofa in fabric by (Sheril sp?) at my local goodwill for $85 but think I can get it cheaper. I'm getting things for my son and want to do a sort of kinda Jonathon Adler look. I'm having a blast looking for things and can't wait to find some cool stuff with color and other things needed. I literally sit pushing the refresh button on CL while having my tea, you have to be fast.
