Need help finding a good quality modern/transitional extra long sofa

Unfortunately the one I ended up really liking is the Restoration Hardware 10' Parisian classic slope arm sofa, but I really don't like the feel of the fabrics and am concerned about some of the quality issues brought up in this forum about RH furniture.

Any suggestions? I do not want a sectional, unless it is a straight sectional.

I found another one I liked at Design Within Reach, but holy price tag!

The problem with the reputable, USA-made sofas (like Hickory Chair, etc) is that their styles are more traditional. I'm looking for something more modern (not as modern as Blu Dot), or a transitional style. I like clean lines and not slouchy sofas.

Should I bite the bullet and get the DWR sofa, or is there hope of finding a good quality 10' sofa that costs no more than ~$5k? (which I think is more than reasonable!)

Have whatever sofa you dream of made by a local custom shop. I had several upholstered pieces made in exactly the style I wanted - every measurement as well as fabric was my choice. The cost was far less than comparable quality - if I could even have found comparably designed pieces.

DWR does have 15% off sales regularly, so certainly wait for that if you decide to go with them.

for choices on bedding, check online shopping sites like RueLaLa, Gilt, and OneKingsLane. Check return policy-usually easy but will depend on a manufacturer..and whether it's a final sale. You need to sign up for this, if you're not yet, but takes a second as is worth it. My favorite bedding was bought there. Antropologie and her "younger" cheaper sister, Urban Outfitters, carry a lot of bedding of very different styles. Prices vary a lot. For modern patterns (geometry, big bold florals, etc)check brand Marimekko..online, and also Crate and Barrel carries them. Also brands like Scion and Orla Kiely. Always look at several sites-you'll be able to compare prices, and check on ongoing promotions. Cheaper store/site that can have a fun choice-is indeed IKEA. And another site I like-eBay:) folks might buy something new and then reconsider, and put it for half a price for sale (some do the opposite-buy on sale, and put for a full price..that' not a good deal))

I'm pretty sure the real reason (as opposed to it just being about my superior tastes, lol) that the mister defers questions on all decor and furnishing matters to me, is so he won't have to disappear for an undetermined length of time like the OP's husband. ;) The rug thing has always been a bit confusing to me when the house has what looks like lovely hardwood flooring - rugs cover that up! Unless it's a basement, in which case I totally get wanting to be able to use the space during the winter and not freezing in the process, therefore a rug if not carpet is needed. I can't tell if the curtains are sheers? Honestly I'm more of a 'put blinds up' for windows kind of gal, if the windows require covering for privacy (don't want to give the neighbors a show or anything, lol). Window coverings also help protect darker upholstery from fading due to sun exposure, and to a lesser extent the same goes for noticeable fade and discoloration of lighter colors. Everyone loves a room with lots of big windows providing natural light, all I can think of is what their utility bills during the summer must be like and that they probably don't have a sapphire blue velvet sofa they're anxious to keep from fading and vacuum religiously despite the utilization of a throw blanket strategy to win the war against dog fur.

I don't have any experience with the brands you mentioned, but we are thrilled with the quality and durability of our Stickley sofas. We have the Prairie Settle sofa and love seat in leather (with exposed wood frame), but they have many fabric options as well. We have cats, and it's great not to have to worry about them clawing the fabric like they did with our previous sofas. All of our Stickley pieces have stood up amazingly to kids, pets, and daily heavy use. They are made in America and while they're not cheap, I'm confident they will outlive us so we will never have to replace them. We have had them for about 13 years and they look as good as new. My husband wipes them down with leather conditioner about every other month and there is a slight patina on the leather where we sit on them, but it doesn't detract from the look at all. The wood is so hard it doesn't get dented and scratched from things banging into it.

My question is why a 10' sofa? That's just way too long, and impractical. More than 3 people on a sofa is not conducive to conversation. How big is the room? Maybe you need more than one seating area.

Diana Bier, the current sofa we have is 8’ and believe it or not it’s not long enough! This is for a long but narrow family room with tv. There are side chairs on each side of the sofa too.

I’ve had custom furniture made before, and I agree that it’s not necessarily more expensive, and it’s a great option.

I think it’s a much riskier undertaking with a sofa however. Subtle variations can make a huge difference in both looks and comfort. I think it’s fine if you see a sofa you can try out and examine and then just make it a bit longer or whatever. But cobbling together a custom sofa from, say pictures, is risky in my opinion.

I didn't cobble together a sofa from pictures. I went to the upholsterer and tried out different options in terms of the samples he had - height of seat; height of back; depth of seat; type of back; type of cushion and how many cushions.

That’s sounds like the way to do it!

I guess I’ve seen a couple of cobbled-together not so successful outcomes!

Some manufacturers can customize length (I know Lee Industries can). So if you find a style you like they can make it longer - it will increase the price, but you'd know exactly what you're getting. I know that Lee does have some "extra long" sofas, though they are more in the 105" range. You may like their 1792 or 1299
