A BIG vote for the industrial-style shelves -- which would work so well with the strong line of the globe .... :)

I don't care for the industrial look. Reminds me of the shelving we have in the garden shed. The last one wouldn't offer much space and doesn't appear to be a good fit for your room.

I like the ones from Ballard, tho I would prefer a bit darker shelf.

I would put them on the wall to the right, tho, and move the pix there onto the sailboat wall, or stack them over one another in the space between the two shelves. Back the desk to that, and switch the location of the globe and the wing chair.

The Ballard Designs bookcase reminds me of warehouse shelving, and not in a nice way. However, if you can make something that resembles the famous Billy Baldwin bookcases, that would go with your office.

None of the above. With your wainscoting, a bookcase won't sit against the wall and won't look right. A better choice would be chunky free floating shelves. But, you've got a lot of traditional to overcome if you want to move to transitional or eclectic. The wainscoting is a big part of the traditional look of that room, and it would need to be removed or funk-i-fied if you are trying to go transitional. (Or the other furnishings would need to be a lot more mod.) I could see painting it a metallic pewter and using the industrial chunk looking shelving if you wanted to loosen up the room.

If you want to keep the traditional vibe you have going on, then doing built ins with doors on the bottom that resembled the wainscoting would be the way to go. Or maybe a mahogany or cherry wall hung 2 shelf type unit.

The first pic of the industrial shelf left me uncertain but I really like how it can look accessoried in the Ballard photo. I can't picture the style of the yellow cabinet in there.

I do like the look of the industrial shelves and think the Ballard ones would look good in your space; I like an eclectic look with pieces of varying levels of formality, finish, etc.

And I'm insanely jealous that your husband being on vacation could result in ANY of those projects being completed. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Though I have always been a traditional style girl until recently, I don't think either one of your possible projects go with the study. IMHO they would stick out, and not in a good way. Though I LOVE your shelf a lot, it just doesn't work for the room at all. Cute cabinet, but not so much for the room.

The room is very cohesive as it sits now. How about some nice shelves on the back wall?

Just a thought to ponder. Do you think you are wanting to transition to a new style in the whole house? I was always traditional until the last 2 years and now I lean mostly to modern/contemporary. Perhaps your styles are changing and you're trying to take baby steps to test it out. Since the room is so cohesive as it sits now, perhaps trying out a new style in a small bath area, would provide you with a test. You obviously have wonderful decorating talent with how the study looks now.

I don't mind mixing styles. I'm coming to like a more eclectic look and am leaning toward the industrial bookcase more so than the cutesy linen cabinet. My biggest concern is that they will clutter up the space where-as now it is rather clean lined. But I also thought that a study/office should have bookcases!

Ours would definitely look like the first example above as they would have to be built with iron pipe as DH doesn't have metal working experience to copy the Ballard one. However, I would like to accessorize them with some big chunky items, as well as some books, therefore the reason I included the Ballard photo.

I still think the Ballard ones (the first ones of the last two pix) are the way to go. They compliment the globe and the pendant light nicely, and have a more modern, clean-lined feeling without being stark.

I would still be inclined to paint or stain the wood. Paint white or dark brown/black, or stain with a darker stain to compliment the pieces in the room.
