Oil vs. latex paint: 1928 bungalow window trim

Hello, all. Our 1928 bungalow has all its original windows, which we want to keep. The last owner used latex paint on the trim and it is slowly lifting the old paint beneath, causing large areas to bubble, crack, and drop off the house. So we intend to scrape the paint off down to the bare wood and repaint from scratch. I've been hearing horror stories about painting latex over bare old wood: even when sanded, primed and perfectly applied, it can peel off in sheets. So I'm wondering if anyone still uses oil based paint? I want this to LAST! As you can imagine, it's a major pain since we are not using any power tools (too poor). Any experiences out there?
