How do I connect Verizon NID to my phone line wires

I bought a dual phone jack to connect my phone lines to but when I attach the phone wires to the new jack and then runs a phone cord from NID box to the newely installed jack does not work. I am wondering whether i need to connec the CAT 5 cables from the house directly to the NID box outside, but I do not see anywhere to attach the CAT 5 wires inside the NID box all I see there is a modular hook up. Verizon employee had said all i needed was to plug in the phone wire directly on the NID box but the wire is not long enough to reach my computer. THis is a dry loop line for my DSL I do not have any previous phone line intallations, but I do have jacks inside the house which are not connect to any type of phone service. the phone jack cable wires are hanging in the basement. SO in other words I am trying to figure out how to connect those hanging wires from the basement to the NID box installed by verizon a couple days ago.

If the NID box is the kind with jacks for the customer equipment, then your best bet is to run a phone line to your own jack next to the NID and then use a short jumper cable between the NID and your jack.

If the NID box is a multiline one like they use around here, there should be a customer side that opens with just a screw driver (rather than the thinwall socket used for the company equipment) that has screws that then connect to the little jumpers in the box.

I was very confused by the original message. If I understand correctly, it's basically a demarcation box outside? If so, the modular jack outside is just for a test hookup, it's not designed for consumer equipment (I think when connected it defeats the other connections)

More information is required. A line from the box to the computer??? DSL?? Are you trying to set up dsl, a phone line or what?

One thing I do know, it's common practice for digital phones (say the phone over cable comcast/roadrunner type of thing) to 'reverse feed' phone line to existing jacks - they ensure the phone line is disconnected at the conventional demarcation box, then a phone cable/RJ-11 is run from the cable modem to the nearest phone jack - it can be a double adapter - which then 'reverse feeds' the phone line to all other phone jacks connected to it.

A land line can be a life line in an emergency. If satallites go out during a storm or are blocked, and that happens a lot here, a land line can be an asset. Ditto for when the cell phone company screws up and you need to make an important call. Just get the cheapest, basic service with no extras. I hate paying for crappy landline service too but feel more secure with another option for communicating in an emergency. If you are thinking of getting an alarm system for your home they may need a phone line to hook up to too.

Hooking up to a network is way better than a phone line for the reasons already posted and more. The Tivo only needs to "talk to the mothership" every 7 to 14 days to download the EPG. When I set up my wireless Tivo's (I have 2 wireless, 1 wired), I needed a "real" phone line for the initial setup and system upgrade. Once the system was upgraded, the wireless adapters worked fine. The last time I set up a Tivo was with a wired network adapter and it did not need a phone line for the initial setup.

I came to realize that most of the calls were from telemarketers, businesses, or requests from charities Another benefit to my VoicePulse line is Anonymous Call Intercept. If a call comes in without Caller ID info, the caller hears the "line unavailable" tones, followed by a request to enter their phone number. If they do that, the call is allowed through with the caller ID set to what they entered. Since telemarketers use autodialers, they either get tripped up by the tones or never have a chance to enter a number, thus they are blocked. I've received exactly one telemarketing call in 4.5 years (down from one or two a day prior) Even if they got through that, I still have an ace in the hole ... distinctive ring. Calls from friends (short-long-short), family (long-long), and household members (short-short-long) have distinctive ring patterns. All other calls have a normal ring. This let's me make a decision on whether to answer or not without having to stop what I am doing. Another side benefit to entering numbers for distinctive ring is that I can assign them custom Caller ID info. "Mom (Cell)" is must more descriptive than "PENNSYLVANIA", for example. I realize that I sound like a shill for VoicePulse, but I am just a happy customer, and have been one for many years. I will admit that they are not for everyone, as you now have multiple dependencies for your home phone to work, instead of just one. I'm fairly sure that in the time of widespread crisis, my phone will not work for some period of time. But if you are looking to get rid of your home phone, they might be a good compromise and are well worth the cost. This is where I think Verizon might have a problem... many people that are dropping landlines have already accepted the lack of the landline reliability. The cheap lines will not win these people back. As such, I don't really see who they are targeting with this service. I'd be the first, though, to admit that I am missing something obvious.

Many many thanks for everyone's comments thus far. I replaced the suspect connector at the demarcation point with a simple twist cap as one poster mentioned. Really that should work :) Our phone lines *sound* fine. However our max dsl speed is still 500-600. Unfortunately, I just had an organ transplant and need the ability to work from home with a higher bitrate than that! I work at Pixar, so we deal with a lot of Gigs of image data, etc. Unfortunately the change in connector has no effect as many of you had suspected. Here is what we have done so far, if anyone has an additional idea, I'm all ears. Here is what we have done on our side, none of which showed an improvement 1. Removed all extra components from our network - unplugged and disabled the hub, hardware vpn box, airport leaving just linux box->dsl modem 2. Tried another phone jack with same configuration (this was done post each additional change just for completeness). Phone jack tested was installed 3 years ago at the time of purchase of the home, so new wiring, straight run to the demarcation point. 3. Removed all phones from the system - the only thing in the house using a phone line is the dsl modem 4. Installed dsl filter for the alarm system (previously was a locked box and I had been assured a filter had been installed, bastards) 5. Got a key from the alarm company, disabled the alarm system/disconnected it from the phone system completely So again, at this stage, there is NOTHING connected to the phone lines other than the modem->linuxbox 6. Removed questionable electrical connector connecting the five branch lines in the house, restripped wires, capped with a twist connector 7. Rewired the preferred outlet for the dsl modem as it too looked questionable / installed new RJ45 jack on the existing phone line. Still max speed of 500-600. We love our static IPs for both vpn and running a webserver, but we cannot live with this speed. Do you have any ideas on how to further pursue this? AT&T has been out to the house and said our phone lines were fine, DSL Extreme last said it must be the alarm. Since then, we've done the rewiring/replacement of suspect connectors AND disabled the alarm completely. Sincere thanks, susan, who doubts a punchdown block is going to change anything but is willing to try anything at this point!

Many of the NID boxes have a regular jack for hooking up to the screw terminal strip for premises wiring.

A short cable is plugged in and connected to the adjacent strip.
The premises wiring lands on the screw strip.

The TELCO responsibility ends at the jack.

I didn't know the modular was intended for use like that, the demarc boxes I've seen refer to it as a test jack - and the telus guy who replaced me told me about it. Could well be different here.

Same deal in Canada, telco responsibility ends at the demark box, I guess unless you engage the telco to wire the house.

I kind of like that, since it gives us more flexibility. When it was BCtel, a govt body, it was somewhat less flexible.

I wonder if the OP sorted it out. I hate that, when they never come back.

In the US they must supply it to a jack or connection that provides the service.

By using a jack in the NID a butt set is easily connected to show that service is available.
How you hook up everything past that point is not the TELCO's problem.
They delivered service.
