Am I just paranoid, or did my neighbor 'borrow' my phone line?

We have two neighbors who have cut through our phone line over the course of the past year. The last and most recent time was when a neighbor two houses over hired a company to install an irrigation system. The guys cut through multiple phone lines as well as septic lines.

This last neighbor has never been happy with the quality of their phone line, says it's noisy. He made enough noise up the Verizon ladder to have a tech out here this past Sunday to lay him a new line. Later that day, our phone ceased to work. Our phone indicates the line is "in use." All we get is noise; if I try to redial a number in caller id memory, I get a few busy signals, then nothing. Phone company says it won't be convenient to do anything for us until Saturday.

Is it possible we were sacrificed to make the noisy guy happy? Mind you, the folks to the right of us (owners of local pharmacy), the dentists to the left, the folks with the new line (so he can work out of his house), as well as the folks next to them (made a BIG stink last time they cut his line, as he also works from home) all have working lines. Coincidence or am I paranoid?

Call Verizon service and get them to restore your phone service. Telling us about the problem will not get it restored. I think your neighbor is guilty only of causing the phone lines to be cut. And does your internet service use the phone line?

The phone repair person caused the problem. His book probably said that the line was unused so he disconencted it. Happens all the time to my sister. House next to her has same street number according to phone company(not true). Everytime someone moves in or out they mess her line up trying to connect them up.

Hello..... I have no problem with throwing anything that rots into the ground!!! I have buried my dogs,parakeets, cats, mice, fish, lobsters, and my worst enemy,and so on near my plants...Any plant living near these things that I have buried, seem to do GREAT..I buried at least 20 pounds of fish next to a dying red bud tree 2 years ago, and that thing came back with a vengance! We know for sure the ground is the place to be for these things... But in containers???? Thats my point.. I just thought that burying these things in CONTAINERS only invites trouble and a whole bunch of maggots, and does nothing for a potted plant...In fact, maggots is what I saw crawling over the top of some of his containers, falling over the edge with tons of birds having a field day on a hot day last week... Funny thing is though, the ones that have not been dug through by varmits, are doing quite well anyways or yet still....lol My backyard STILL reeks like a whole lot of dead fish by the sea. It masks out the sweet smells from all my sweet lilies and anything else that use to make my backyard smell so nice. I hope this smell goes away fast, or I will send out the cats in my local pet shelter to have a field day..Those poor poor things cooped up all day in those small cages the next block from me......I can hear them houl all night sometimes,..;-( :-(

This won't help you, as I don't know what to say. I, like you, am against chemicals. I've been internally frustruated lately as on one side I have the neighbors barberries they never prune and I'm eventually stuck with doing some pruning and being jagged as they've reached so far into my garden (plus the numerous seedlings everywhere in spring). The same has in different spot vicious thorny wild blackberries (or just jaggers) I finally had to cut back yesterday, again they just neglect and they were reaching 3 feet over into my side, over fence. Then there's the ivy, the weed shrubs with some disease, the "wild" Rose of sharon (common name) that reseeds everywhere that's now more on my side then theres, etc. General neglect of their side, and the weeds, 2-3 feet tall, full now of seedheads that blow. The neighbor behind me, never gardens. Has grasscutters once/month. The weeds are incredible. The ivy and whatnot strangling everything. The other side has the paranoid husbund with the woodpile, uncovered compost, (unknown critters) who complains, and complains. They just have the ivy, clover, weeds... and his eagle eyed view of what he may need to complain about. And their maple, which loves to clog all gutters. Their shrubs on other end they decided finaly to cut back on their side, but left mine (sounds so funny, "my side, "their side"..!!) untouched so now it looks... rough. He was venting on how all these animals are probably hiding in them, and how snakes are probably hiding in my garden (not possible), etc. He watches my rainbarrel, to be sure it's covered. Paranoid, military man. I'm too timid to approach, but I retreat. Not a good approach, to avoid neighbors....No easy answer.

I'm pretty sure she knows that it's way too loud. She doesn't actually believe the maintenance guy is racist, if she does then she needs her head examined. I think she's stalling because she doesn't want to kick out paying tenants. I've actually tried to arrange something with the manager, because my neighbors usually start up around 6:30pm, half-an-hour after the office closes and all-day on Sundays when the office isn't open at all. The problem is, the office is usually closed by the time I get home from work. Tuesdays are the only days I'm home before 6pm and I think they've caught onto my pattern because she's always busy now when I show up and she's off on Saturdays. I've left messages with her assistants but she's totally dodging me. I sent an email to the regional manager last night, I don't have their phone number and can't find it for the life of me. It'll probably be a week or so before I hear anything back. As for my neighbors, they're friends with the people who live next door to them. The guy who lives above them is deaf (I'm not joking he's actually deaf). The woman who lives directly across from them works evenings and doesn't get home until midnight, but she actually told me that she can sometimes hear their television in her living room during the day, but she doesn't want to get involved. I think I can work on her and she might be willing to talk to the manager, if I can ever get a hold of her, but I still don't think my manager will do anything. If the regional manager won't get involved, can I break my lease without shelling out the subsequent fine?

Sounds like time to separate Summer_Rose -- Not from Greg, but from your parents. You're now a grown adult with a full share of adult responsibilities. And when your parents ask you for money and it puts you behind on your own bills, that makes it really hard for you in turn not to ask them for money when you're low. A vicious circle that someone has to break. Next time they make some comment about growing up or being more responsible or being more independent or taking money from them or not taking money from Greg -- and that shouldn't be too long -- Take that as your springboard, and tell them "You're right -- From now on, I'm going to be financially independent. Totally! No more of this borrowing back and forth. When you said I shouldn't mix up my finances with anyone else, you were right. No more borrowing and no more lending for me." Refuse to listen to any arguments, repeating only variations on the "You're right -- no more mixing" theme. Then stick to it. Next time they hit you up for a loan, tell them you can't do that and still meet your own commitments, and how much you'd hate to let them down by failing to live up to your responsibilities. I totally agree with Vicky about Greg's apology to your parents. They were both wrong, but between the two sides, he seems to be "the bigger person" -- so lob the ball back into their court. If you want, you could tip your parents off that since Greg is the man you want to spend the rest of your life with, they may want to make an effort to mend fences.

all you can do is call Verizon. Saturday is not that bad for residential service, in my area Bellsouth says 10-14 days for a residential outage, even if they caused it. they usually do not take that long, but that is what they will tell you.

BTW, the noise on the line may have been a bad card in the RT. the tech swapped the neighbors with one that was marked as unused, but it was yours. jsut explain to the telco that your line was fine until they fixed your neighbors, and now you have his problem.

Oops, they did it again. Verizon has finally conceded that enough damage has been done after this last event that a new line is warranted. Maybe three years is the charm!

I have been going through the same thing for four years now.
I have terrible static and at one point lost my dial tone.
I have actually dialed out and at the same time can hear other people dialing out and having conversations.
I was told ATT " piggy backs" lines and at one point it was repaired. Today, I picked up the phone and made a call and the noise is back.

It seems that you already have high speed internet, why not get VOIP? I have had "vonage" and "magic jack" which both work fine. To heck with the phone company and their pathetic service. I haven't used a land line in years.

A land line can be a life line in an emergency. If satallites go out during a storm or are blocked, and that happens a lot here, a land line can be an asset. Ditto for when the cell phone company screws up and you need to make an important call.

Just get the cheapest, basic service with no extras. I hate paying for crappy landline service too but feel more secure with another option for communicating in an emergency. If you are thinking of getting an alarm system for your home they may need a phone line to hook up to too.

In my old house, I used to call in (Verizon) whenever my modem speeds dropped (this was a while ago) and could hear audible static on the line. The repair person would come out and swap my pair and I'd be fine. I'm certain they used that pair for someone else. After a while a tech told me the trunk feeding our neighborhood was being attacked by squirrels and they eventually had to run a new one.
