I am looking for technology solutions. Now that 4G is available where I live (boonies), I am ready to ditch my land line and possibly my satellite internet. AT&T offers a great wireless gateway that will allow me to port my home number to my wireless AND connect my cordless phones to it. BUT... How do I handle my telephone connection to my Dishnet receiver? Do I really need that - do they use it to call my receiver or is it just to purchase movies? How can I handle my remote gate entry call box? The landline runs through my gate box so that when people press the call box, it rings on my cordless phone and I can buzz them in. How do I handle the alarm system: I am looking at an interface box that would allow me to use the Internet to send alarms instead of land lines. I have satellite internet but can now get high speed internet on my iPhone over a 4G network. The problem with the cell phone approach is that if I am away from the house with my phone, there would ne no alam system connection to the internet. Could I just buy a hot spot device and leave it in the house all the time? Thanks for the help

thanks, David, and demark. Demark, actually I took the "inactive" jumper, and plugged it into the jack which is currently feeding my "Line 1". I did this so as to activate a wall jack in my house which used to be a "Line 2" Phone.What I did was the opposite of what you stated in your second paragraph. I took the "Inactive" black cable and plugged it into the "active" jack feeding my active "Line 1". David, I tested the other, active jumper , and sure enough, the plug is directly wired to the binding posts (I can see the leads). Apparently, there is a break in the other jumper. Mystery solved! It's cold outside, and these "modules" are plastic, so I don't want to investigate further right now. Thanks to both of you for the info.

i will start looking on line. i have one more question. would they be sensitive to moisture at all? we have a VERY damp basement and thats were it would be located. also any opinions on bundled wire? i saw one that has 2 rg6 and 2 cat5e. it was $139 for 200 ft. i would really only need about 100 ft, but it was alot more by the ft at $2/ft. i was thinking about using that wire for when we remodel the 2 upstairs bedrooms.

Given the motivation, anyone can do just about anything, if they're prepared to go to the trouble and expense. If upstairs and downstairs are all finished, it's going to be pretty difficult. As an alarm tech I think I know most of the ways you can run wires in a retrofit. Stinkytiger, here's a really easy thing to try no-one's suggested yet: assuming you don't want to run a new wire just yet, and you've eliminated the connections at both ends as a culprit, you could try switching to another pair of wires. If it's station z old school, line one is probably on red/green. There should be two more, yellow/black. At both ends, put the yellow/black where the red/green was. If it's ok, you're golden. If it's cat 3 or cat 5, you'll have 4 pairs. Line one is Blue/white blue, line two is orange/white orange. Try removing blue/white at both ends, use orange pair. You can try all the pairs, in fact before you do anything, test the spare pairs with your meter. Assuming you're not running a business or off-track betting at your place, you're only going to need one line.
