Mom2 was asking about high school dating and sex issues, and how to handle them.
I will say right off, I havent ever had to get a girl through the initial dating time, or had the opportunity to give the early sex info to a girl. The only girl I have had is my foster daughter, who came to me close to her 16th birthday, and unfortunately was already having sex, etc.
My stepdaughter is coming up on the dating/sex age soon, and its frustrating, because her mom isnt addressing it, feeling that if you dont talk about it, then it wont happen ( very common in the southern bible belt). I dont think its my place to be the main provider of info, or opinions, but I am going to expect that I will be, because no one else is. I had to explain to the girl last summer, where babies come from , because the girl, at 12 years old, had been told by her mom that you cant become pregnant unless you take your clothes off in your bedroom with your husband. I think that was wishful thinking on moms part, a sort of half truth sex talk, hoping to insure the girl only would take her clothes off with her future husband? I dont know. I couldnt just let that kind of misinformation stand. I have no desire to be a step gramma any time soon.
I will say something that I have observed in other families. When a girl hits high school and "falls in love", she truly thinks its forever, and she and the boy involved will end up married and living happily ever after. At that point, her youthful hormones are running her thought processes. Some parents try reasoning with her, telling her it wont last, its puppy love ( we all know it is), and that it will end sometime. She isnt going to believe you if you tell her that. She is convinced that its forever love.
Some parents go as far as banning a girl from seeing a particular guy, if they dont like him, or if they feel her grades are slipping. In every case that I have personal knowledge of, banning the girl from seeing a particular guy has backfired. The girl, who believes she is in love, then believes that her parents are against her, and will do anything, sneak, lie, and outright leave, to be with the guy she thinks she is in love with. Giving a girl an ultimatum on a guy is doomed to failure from the start, if that girl thinks she is in love.
Its also worth noting that kids in their early teens have what is called by educators, negative learning. THe hormonal changes, beginning around 10 or 11, and going to about 15-16, cause such upheaval in young bodies that for a period of time, grades often DO slip, and kids often DO become less respo nsible in school. The refusal to do homework and the tendency to skip assignments are part of this as well. Students who have traditionally be straight A kids sometimes slip to B, or C. A slight dip in grades isnt anything to worry about, although a huge crash could be a real warning sign.
The best gift a parent can give a child about to head into those early teen years, is understanding, and a strong sense of self worth. Its really important to keep the communication lines open, which is hard to do if they dont trust you, hence my thoughts on the other topic. The more a teen trusts you, the more you will be able to give input into their lives at that point.
I think , for a girl, I would emphasis a few things about sex. I would be openly talking about teen pregnancy, and how hard it is for a young girl who gets pregnant to overcome it and have a secure life after. I wouldnt threaten or try to frighten, I would just take those opportunities that present themselves naturally in a close relationship, less like THE TALK, and more like a natural outflow of what is happening at the time. This Jamie lynn spears getting preggers was a great opportunity for dialouge about it.
The other thing I would probably try to introduce into conversation is the physical aspect of sex itself, and how a girl who has sex too young shortchanges herself. A teen boy who ends up convincing the gf to have sec with him, well, thats ALL he is going to want to do. He will not want to go on dates, or neck in cars, or hang out with friends anymore, it will become all about the sex. The other stuff is far more important to girls. They thrive on the dating stuff, and the romance. They lose all that when they have sex too soon.
ON top of that, they arent even likely to enjoy it. The girls themselves dont know what pleases them and what doesnt, because they havent had sufficient time to discover their bodies. Teen boys are going to make lousy lovers. It will be all about them. They wont even last long enough to make it worth it, lol, and the poor girl will wo nder what all the fuss was about.
I think I have lots more to say on this subject, but posts can only be so long before they make peoples eyes glaze over.
