basic receptacle wiring, pigtails or screws?

Hi. I remember reading somewhere that it is not good practice to wire a circuit through a receptacle, but that pigtails should be used instead. The second set of screws on a duplex receptacle should be used only if you are making one half of the receptacle switched, and are breaking the tabs. However, I have seen receptacles listed with "wire through" capacity, so I am now confused. I am currently wiring a ganged receptacle (2 duplexes in one box) with 12 guage wire that will also have two additional outlets being fed from this box. So, that means a lot of stiff wires being twisted together and shoved into wirenuts trying to make pigtails instead of using the screws on the receptacles to make the connections to the additional receptacles. It's not working out so well, so I thought it might be ok to use the screws after-all. Is this ok? Thanks.
