Something appears to be more wrong than a slight overload like might occur with too many things on the same circuit.

When you say two out of place, do you mean two independent circuit breaker handles, or a double breaker with twin handles?

Disconnect everything you can from the affected circuit(s). Try resetting the breaker(s) again. If this doesn't work, you are probably going to have to call an electrician.

Call an electrican not the power company. Power companies don't mess with your circuit breaker panels, just the meter and outside. The fact that the breakers won't stay reset indicates they are most likely overloaded. There's probably more on the circuit than you think. Circuits typically span floors.

Thanks! I managed to get one back on after I unplugged a surge surpressor I forgot about, but both bedrooms still have no power except for the air conditioner outlet in one. Would each bedroom have their own circuit breaker. I thought fixing one would give me power in one of the bedrooms.

Also, wouldn't each floor have their own breaker box? There are two separate boxes there. So your saying that the first floor might have an overload that would transfer to my apartment, even though they have their own breaker boxes and breakers?

I meant two independent breakers. They are right on top of each other. The breakers are in two vertical columns in each breaker box, and these are the two bottom right ones.

Breaker boxes can be placed almost ANYWHERE and there is no "first floor vs second floor" rule or even guideline. What you're asking cannot be answered. I do not know your house, and do not know where the panels are - nor does anyone else here.

Here's what I want you to do:

Unplug EVERYTHING that is affected (ie, not working). Then push ALL of the breaker handles to the position labeled OFF. Then push ALL of them back to ON.

Now plug stuff back in, one item at a time, until the breaker trips again. Whatever you plugged in last is defective and needs to be repaired by someone with a clue.

Thanks guys! My tenant just got home and managed to get it to stay on, and we now have power. I don't know how he did it when I couldn't but I'm happy we now have lights.

Should I move the heater which draws 1500 watts on high (usually use on 800-1000 watts), to the air conditioner line outlet? I think that's made for more juice as it stayed on when everything else went off in the bedroom. I thought the computer should be on it as it's the most sensitive, but that's on a good quality surge suppressor.

If the air conditioner is not in use at the moment, it's an ideal place to connect the heater- it may have its own breaker or be less loaded. best to spread the load around and remember those power strip/surge protectors are only for small loads - don't ever plug a heater into one.

Thanks! The heater was plugged directly into the wall before. Looking at what was plugged in at the time it all went I had--heater drawing 800 watts according to it's specs, a 13" TV, a satellite TV receiver box, and a DSL cable box on the line. It was all on for quite a while before it went. The heater maybe cycled drawing more power and upset the cart.

I will move the heater to the other AC line. Thanks again for everyone's help. It was much appreciated ;-).
