I wasn't even going to post an answer when I read your question, because my first thought was a pale, soft green, and I figured it you wouldn't be interested in a cooler toned shade like that. Reading the other posts, though, yes, I agree wholeheartedly with the other posters. Your cabinets are really warm and beautiful, I think terra cotta would be a *lot* of reddish-brown without the needed contrast. I love Ben Moore's Silken Pine. It's just barely darker than a tinted white; a very pale green. You could also consider BM Palladian Blue at 25% or 50% saturation, or BM Classic Gray- popular because it's a very neutral, gorgeous gray. Not too warm or to cool, they really got this one right. Anyway, when you do settle on a color, you may want to do some GWing/Googling and figure out which colors in that family are popular go-to colors professional designers. I've learned that using their go-to colors saves me tons of money in paint sample quarts poor color choices.

Your tile is beautiful and I love it with the counter. You might try posting in Kitchens....it has a lot of activity.

Your friend should tell you which stone yards he/she works with so you can go look at the slabs (with a cabinet door with you to hold up against them) and take home samples of the ones you like to see in your lighting. Given the warm tones in the cabinets and floor, creams or warmer whites would probably be better than cool/stark whites or grays. Unless you want to go dark - then a black would work well too. It all depends on what your style is, the colors you like, and what you are looking to achieve. Do some googling and searching on here - warm wood kitchens - and see what you like and strikes your fancy. I think the cabinets are beautiful, and the layout looks decent, though the stark white walls and ceiling do not compliment them at all. The backsplash doesn't seem to go well either (on my monitor). I would replace the ceiling light fixture, paint the walls and ceiling a warmer color, and live with it. As megs said, live with the kitchen for several months before making a major investment - if the layout just doesn't work for your family and lifestyle, and you want to redo the whole thing, you're farther ahead if you didn't spend $5K on painting the cabinets. There may be other things in your "new to you" house that take priority over a cosmetic change to a pretty kitchen.
