Paint Kitchens Design Dilemma

Need help with selecting kitchen cabinet and wall paint color

Hello everyone,
We just bought our first home and I really don’t like the color scheme in the kitchen (or anywhere else in the house). I don’t have any sense of design, and was thinking to get the cabinets professionally repainted in white. Would that look nice in this kitchen if I don’t replace the countertops? If so, what Benjamin Moore shade would be good? And for wall paint?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me, I truly appreciate it!

Many questions. Budget? DIY? Or will you have the cabinets painted professionally? Will you be replacing any lighting, appliances?

Also, if you just moved in, I'd suggest living in your kitchen for a while before deciding on tackling any major renos. Repainting cabinets is timely if DIY, and costly if having it done professionally. I'd honestly wait to see if layout works for you, if any other major repairs pop up in the house, etc. In the meantime, save, save, save, make notes of what works and what doesn't, and start building an ideabook of what you like and what you don't.

Thanks for your reply megs1030. I’d get it professionally done, appliances stay, lighting will be replaced (no idea with what yet). I’ve been quoted 5k for the refinishing and that’s basically my budget.
Good point on waiting a bit and saving!

Whew! This has gotten quite crazy... I currently have 7 different 'grays' on my walls right now. I had started with Revere Pewter and Edgecomb gray thinking I was pretty spiffy having made a paint decision in a snap. I had even painted small samples - but apparently, they were either not big enough or I did not view in the correct light because I really wanted a 'grayer' gray and was not happy with them after the painter painted large swaths on the walls. So this morning I purchased four sample colors. After talking to the young man at the paint store about my dilemma he had suggested a gray with blue undertones. I was not quite certain this would work and so also purchased 2 other more neutral grays (or so I thought.) The colors I painted from that expedition are: Winter Solstice/Englewood Cliffs and Harbor Gray/Galveston Gray. Winter Solstice is pretty - but comes across very blue-gray and Englewood Cliffs is *very* dark. I had read a post about grays appearing lighter on the samples and so I tried a shade slightly darker than I wanted hoping it would even out... well - that was sure a miss :-/ The Harbor Gray is pretty much a true light gray where it was painted but the Galveston was very dark - almost a muddy charcoal like color - again I had overcompensated. So, back to the store I went again and got lots of samples, took them back to work so I could take a bit more time before deciding and could get some opinions. It seems to have done the trick because I believe I have settled on two colors - Stonington Gray and Sea Haze. Oddly enough, I expected these to read a bit greener than they actually do in my rooms. Either way, I am pleased and have colors for the painter - just in time. I will try to post pictures once the rooms are painted. Thanks to all for all the advice :-) @stinky-gardener - Hello! Thanks for the feedback. We are thinking Neutral. We had the kitchen wall painted BM White Dove OC-17, but it just doesn't goes well with the knockdown finish,.and with the BM Pearl Harbor in the background the kitchen wall looks unfinished. Could you suggest a neutral that would flow with the BM Pearl harbor, that also goes with the granite (bedrosian colonial cream) and glass tile.

moving into recently purchased home and needing help coordinating paint colors. the challenge is we have 8 foot ceilings and not a ton of natural light (i.e. a ton of shadows). we narrowed down our wall color to Ballet White (Benjamin Moore OC-9); other contenders were Halo and Winds Breath (OC-46 and OC-24, respectively). **my question is, what BM paint will complement Ballet White to use on the bottom part of the wall (below the chair moulding)?? this moulding is used in the dining room and front entrance only. once that is figured out, what kitchen cabinet color (we like warm whites) would work well with the wall paint we selected, Ballet white?? we are staining our floors a dark color, like special walnut or something if that sort. thanks!!

I think the cabinets are beautiful, and the layout looks decent, though the stark white walls and ceiling do not compliment them at all. The backsplash doesn't seem to go well either (on my monitor).

I would replace the ceiling light fixture, paint the walls and ceiling a warmer color, and live with it. As megs said, live with the kitchen for several months before making a major investment - if the layout just doesn't work for your family and lifestyle, and you want to redo the whole thing, you're farther ahead if you didn't spend $5K on painting the cabinets.

There may be other things in your "new to you" house that take priority over a cosmetic change to a pretty kitchen.

If those heavy drapes are still up, take them down and simplify. Replacing the ceiling light will probably require something else to be done to the ceiling, just saying because of the size of the light. That would be more money than just changing out the light. I would rather see a plainer, simpler dinette in there too. Everything just looks heavy.

Hi Tara,
That’s exactly how I feel, everything is so heavy. The drapes aren’t there anymore, and the breakfast table set isn’t there either. This is the previous owner’s set-up, we haven’t moved in yet.

Attaching a picture of the same kitchen plan in a neighboring home (with the exception of the backsplash). Is this nice? I think it’s nicer than the cabinets color I have now.
