How to dress this window?

DD is renting a new condo and needs window treatments for two sliders like this. Since it's a rental she doesn't want to invest a great deal of money, but at the same time she hopes to be here for a while and wants it to look nice. The window is approximately 12' wide (I think). She's looking for something to take care of light and privacy issues. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Even though they are not all that attractive, what about just purchasing the slider vertical blinds (from Lowes/Home Depot)? I don't know how much money your daughter wants to invest, since she's renting-unless she's staying long term. The blinds will serve their purpose well, are affordable, will allow as much or as little light in as your daughter desires, and will give her complete privacy as well. You can always dress them up with a swag of fabric on top. Just a thought.

Shades that open bottom-up would provide privacy without completely blocking the light or view.

If prohibitively expensive, maybe cafe curtains installed at railing height. It's sort of odd to see cafe curtains on a slider, but it would serve the purpose. Might visually increase the width of the room, too.

Alternative, could do a number of evergreens in planters on deck to act as a permanent outdoor 'cafe curtain'.

Snbtwins, your best bet is decide the length of the rod, where you want the panels to start and stop. Since you are having the panels custom made, I would suggest you use that measurement to figure how many lengths or half lengths of fabric you want the panels to be. When I make panels I prefer them to be at least double the width they were cover. Since you will not be closing them, that would be from the edge inside edge of the window trim to the finial. Measure from arrow to arrow and double (or 2.5 times) to get width of finished panel.

Gracie I have three of those same blinds in my living room. I've had them for 3-4 years and they're holding up very well. They look nice. No problems. I like them as well as my other 2" faux wood blind from Lowes (Style Selections). I just removed them again recently for a good outside hose cleaning! I don't raise them often but I do open and close the slats daily. For curtains, I'd look at Ikea first. They're inexpensive and well made.

You could remodel that hearth and do away with the part near the window :) I like the idea of hanging the panel on the left side of the window and just living with the weird drape over the mantel when they are closed. But I think I would put up a ceiling height valence and do wood blinds. You can change the fabric of the valence as you wish to change the look and the wood blinds are gorgeous and give a room a nice feeling.if you are worried about the height of the blinds then do the top up/down honeycomb ones in a similar color to the walls to make them visually smaller. The window will still be the star of the show and the valence will be the supporting cast that draws the eye.

Thanks everyone! To Kendrah on overall style - my boyfriend and I just bought this house together, so we are merging 2 houses into one! It will be a bit of a style mismash for awhile until we finish decorating. I tend toward a clean modern look and he's more rustic farmhouse. I plan on buying a sectional sofa for the room with the large window. The house is really unique, a 1945 stone home with a mid-century feel.

Your DD might consider panel tracks. They're wide screens, and the panels stack one behind another.
