appropriate gifts for a bio child?

My wife's birthday is coming up later this summer. What does the list think are appropriate gifts by a bio-child? For me, some things seem more "romantic"-- things like jewelry and roses and perfumes. I feel those should be given by a spouse and not a child. My S/D routinely gets things like this for my wife. I have to admit, it is very disconcerting. I know this will get me in trouble on this list, but I think she is a little warped and does not know "her role." I really think that she wants to play the role of my wife's spouse.

My DD got me perfume for my last birthday. It was very thoughtful. We do not have a mini-wife relationship.

I think you're the one with the warped outlook. My DD gives me flowers but not jewellery or perfume, mainly because I don't really wear much jewellery and I'm allergic to perfume. But if she did give me jewellery I would not think it odd at all. I give her jewellery and I certainly don't see myself in the role of her spouse. I've even given and received jewellery from friends.
Before she knew I was allergic to it my SIL gave me perfume, and she has given me jewellery but it's just a gift, you know? I give my MIL flowers both as gifts and for no reason at all, and she does the same for me. It's just nice.
About the only thing I would consider a spouse territory gift would be naughty lingerie. (Nice lingerie can come from anyone.)

IMO, its still the HUBBY who makes the final choice. Anyone, anyone even his own sister can tell him off and convince him not to pick up his kids. but in the end its his choice. No one elses. So it doesn't matter what a SM or a BM wants. Its the decision of that person. And let me bring another perspective to this arguement. You all are ticked off when a weekend is missed from an already constricted schedual eh..???? WELL WHAT HAPPENS WHEN BM MAKES PLANS ON DADS' WEEKENDS OR CONVINCES THE KIDS ITS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO GO??? Then WHAT? SHE MAKES DAD LOOK LIKE A PUTZ FOR THE LOST WEEKENDS. Its happening now with us. Damned if you do take them, and damned if youdont. Well guess what, i'm keeping a log for the last 2 years now of all the weekends lost with his kids and the reasons behind it. When on misses and why. Whether its a school activities, grandma's bday, cousins bdya party, just not up to it, wants to be with mom that weekend...ALL OF IT!. This way, when bm accuses my dh of it , i will have a record with dates and who showed up and who didn't so she doesn't try any funny business. and even the kdis have lashed out at my husband saying, oh your msising alot of weekends. He said yah, and who';s fault is that? YOURS NOT MINE! you want ot be with your friends, and go party and i call you ever week to know if you are coming...so dont play the tag game on me and try to guilt me. YOU ARE DITCHING ME. Be responsible , accept it and stop blaming others for you actions! And this is what i would say about this situation. STOP BLAMING SM'S FOR DADS DECISIONS. She has an imput but not the ultimate say. I think the mentality of blaming sm all the time comes for the same mentality that kids have the final say in these divorce situation and i cannot stress the fact even more that kids have absolutely no say and power lies between the adults. Between mom and dad. And in the end , a SM can b****ch all she wants, if dad says otherwise, its otherwise. And to add, if dad wants to skip one weekend, its also his right. He can make arrangments to picck them up another time for longer.

Custody and access are two seperate things. BD has always had joint custody. It's called joint conservators. He has not always had access. He had supervised access. Joint conservatorship basically means we both have exclusive rights and duties to the child. I have two exclusive rights he does not have. The right to designate residence and the right to make educational decisions. We both have the right to seek medical treatment, provide shelter, food and clothing; the right to inform the other conservator of any info concerning health, welfare and education. We both have the right to religious guidance. He has a duty I do not have and that is to provide child support payments in X amount per month. As far as access it's about 60/40 now. It's called expanded standard possession. He has set weekends and days of the week, we split spring break, christmas and thanksgiving. He has superior rights to designate his access during the summer. My access is all other times not outlined as his possession time. Sole custody is extremely hard to get. Even with all of the mess we have been through, bd has always been a joint conservator he just had limited Access for a while. If I had sole custody I would not have to tell him anything about health, school etc. He would not be able to confer with the school. Even with limited access he still had a right to speak to teachers or to get medical records. With expanded standard possession during the school year, on a month with 30 days, Bd has 12 days, I have 18 days. During the summer he averages about 40 total days and I average about 46 give or take a few during a summer break of about 88 days. That almost 50:50 during the summer. Does that make sense?

I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression. DH is great. He isn't turning a blind eye to SS's behavior. He realizes there's at minimum an "attitude problem" going on. SS's behavior got worse after his biomom left (again) last fall. She tends to come (after being gone for years at a time), promise to be a real mom, hang around just long enough to make SS think maybe she really will this time, and then disappear which is where I think the majority of SS's behavior is coming from, especially the unconscious behavior aimed at women. The physical incident between the 16 and SS happened after the 16 yo didn't shut the van right and in SS's mind if something wasn't perfect, I might leave just like his bio mom so all his anger at biomom came out backwards at the 16 yo. There's only been one physical incident but in a household with austistic spectrum kids, it just takes one incident and they think there's the pattern. I really don't want to make excuses for SS but I do understand why he's acting the way he is. I'm just not sure how to help him, try to keep things fair in the meantime, and not walk around being constantly ticked off at him. I"m thinking this is going to be my plan of action. Let me know what you think 1- SS starts seeing a counselor - as soon as one can be found- period - I"m not his biomom and shouldn't be punished for what she did. I would never ever treat him or anyone that way. and most siblings of children with disabilities have problems adjusting or relating to them, why wouldn't a teenager thrust into the situation, especially with not just one sibling but 3? 2 - Anytime SS doesn't do his 15 min daily chore he will not leave the room the chore was to be in (even if I have to sit on him and he misses his baseball game, pees his pants, or I'm late for work) until he does (making DH enforce the rules isn't adding much to my credibility with SS - It's almost like SS wants me to be the one to punish him) 3- If SS doesn't mow the yard properly with the riding lawn mower, he will use the push mower, even if I or DH have to follow behind him the entire time and make sure he does it all. 4 - the attitude will stop. If he can't see that we all have to work together, I just might try the strike thing and see how much he likes doing his own laundry, own dishes, making is own meals (probably just sandwiches since he can't cook and I"m not buying special groceries for him to eat alone and he wont' eat leftovers). Maybe then he might come to the conclusion, that even if he doesn't realize it, we all work together and people are doing things for him. 4 - the lying, "storytelling, "smart alec comments", whatever you want to call them - I'll just immediately call him on it. NO more games, no more him trying to outsmart me, no more trying to catch him in the lie, just quietly, and simply state "that's bs and you know it" and move on 5 - any attitude directed at the other kids will become immediate and lengthy family discussion and we all know how much teenagers love those, most likely followed by a grounding where he's required to be around the other kids and has to get along - no going to his room, no going to friends, etc (I'm in the office only 3 days a week so this should be able to be closely supervised). 6 - as for unfairness in material possessions, they'll each just have a dollar limit for school clothes, etc. IF SS wants to blow all his on one pair of shoes and one pair of shorts, so be it - he doesn't then get to complain that he has nothing to wear. 7 - as for the homework, DH and I discussed at the end of the school year, that we can check on the computer for finished homework - if the homework shows as not turned in on Friday (too bad if the teacher forgot to update it), the TV from his room is gone (no more cable, no more video games, etc) and he spends each night until bedtime at the dining room table doing homework and has to physically show us the homework (the exact missing assignment and any current assignments emailed to me from the teacher) is completed before being excused - if he says he forgot it at school the principal has kindly volunteered to go open up the school for him (the principal just doens't want it to become a daily thing, but I think we'll only have to call this bluff a couple times) - this one is going to take a lot of time, but again I don't think it'll be something that will always require as much time, just follow up, once he sees we mean it ok what does everyone think?

Yeah......Sweeby, Raek really is right on the money. She brought up a point that none of us really ever thought of. I'm sorry that DS chose the "prison" over the "park", but it really was his choice to make. My heart would break for my DS if he was in that situation, but, as I tell my DS all the time, think through your decisions because they may not turn out like you think. Is the extra effort worth the part-time use of the car? Probably not, but he probably didn't think about that when he was offered the Lexus. Heck, I made the same stupid decision once. I took a job that was a 90 mile round trip every day for only $.50 more! I guess I thought it was worth it at first. Little did I know.......... On a side note, I would've crawled on my hands and knees and kissed the feet of anyone who offered me a car at 17. ESPECIALLY a free one! I didn't get a car until I was 18 or 19. My mom, my X (boyfriend at the time) and my X's mom drove me everywhere I needed to go, even after I was working full-time.

Me thinks you have waaaayyyyy toooooooo much time on your hands this summer and are looking for things to fuss and fret over.

You're asking about your wife's birthday present from her adult child. So what do you think is appropriate inplace of a bottle of perfume or a pair of pretty earrings and/or jewelery set? I'm serious, Thurman. What do YOU recommend a grown daughter gives her mother for a present? Not just birthday, but a present at anytime for any occassion?

Oh, and a clue, Thurman, your wife nor her daughter will feel something like a generic card stating nothing but 'happy birthday' and signed simply 'first name' is the answer. Oh, and another tidbit, Thurman, your wife nor daughter won't give a rats behind what you think of daughter's gift to her mother...it's Mom's birthday, it isn't about 'Thurman' or Thurman's relationship with his wife.

You realize, right, I'm going to laugh my buns off if your adult son sends his mom a little pair of gold earrings.

Oh good lord....my children have given me perfumes, lotions, jewelry, flowers, etc. So what. I've also received these kinds of things from other family members & friends too. This kid just can't win. I'm sure you would have found something wrong with ANYTHING she gave to her mother just because it came from HER. The only thing that matters is if your wife has a problem with it and I can pretty much bet that she doesn't mind the gifts at all.

My son gave me a bracelet once. Now I'm starting to wonder if there was something Oedipal in the gift.

You judge your wife's daughter by principles and rules no one else could even imagine.

She and your wife have somehow survived your pathological aversion, but I don't know how you can stand to feel such emotions. It must be like acid in your system.

At least you do ask so that demonstrates on some level you suspect your thoughts are irrational.

I'm not a troll. I truly am uncomfortable with it. It does show my hypocrisy, as I would probably applaud my son doing it. It hurts that she would give my wife such a personal gift and my wife so enjoy it...the SD is into competition over gifts...she tries to outgive me to "prove" how much she loves her mother...it's kind of creepy.

No, it's kind of creepy the way you interpret everything your wife's daughter does which reinforces her good relationships with her mother and half brother, is interpreted by you as some sort of rivalry. Dear God you are a jealous, petty little man.

Here's something for you to mull around with yourself, Thurman. Why is it that it 'hurts' that one of your wife's children gives her a gift, but if her other child gave her the same gift you would be happy and proud? Why is it a 'bad' thing that she enjoys a gift her child gives her? Why would it be a 'good' thing and please you if the other child gave her the same gift and she enjoyed it? Why do you see one child as competition 'trying to buy' the love of your wife and the other child basically as 'what a nice gift for you(son)to give your mother'? Why is one 'trying to buy love' and the other merely giving a nice gift in your view?

Would it somehow delight and thrill you for wife to open a gift from her daughter and announce 'oh daughter, I am so unhappy with you buying me this gift, you should not have done this, I dislike it and I dislike you thought you should gift me with such a present. Gifts like this should only come from Thurman and my son' (as she's sitting there with a tiny bottle of department store perfume in her hand).

Even you, Thurman, can surely see how totally asinine that scenario is.

It's pretty obvious from all your threads of posting here that this mother loves both her children and that both her children love her. It also seems pretty obvious that your wife loves you...why else would the lady put up with you for 20 yrs, she loves you inspite of yourself. Yet it somehow seems important to you that your wife love one child more than the other (and of course in your mind that child should be the one you created with her). That your wife should love you and your son as her 'family' and the daughter should be viewed as a competing threat endangering any realtionship you and/or your son has with the lady (wife/mother).

Thurman, you know I just have to ask. What did you get wife for her birthday?
